Savings accounts in Thailand typically have 15% tax withheld at source, most people can reclaim this from the Thai Revenue by filing a tax return each year. Note: the Thai tax year is the calendar year, the tax tables are here: http://www.rd.go.th/publish/6045.0.html

Obtaining a tax ID is very straightforward, as long as you spend at least 186 days in the country each year.

You should make your statement a little clearer, 15% witholding tax is only on any interest earnt, your 800K or whatever amount is not affected! Thanks!

    absolutely not

point 1, there is no royal mail anymore, Royal Mail is history

point 2, there is, however, parcel force,

point 3, non express shipments by parcel force are dealt with by Thai Post

point 4, express shipments by parcel force are NOT dealt with by Thai Post

Ha ha!! I give up on you..just don't give up arguing!

    yes, up to me

royal mail - parcel force uses Thai Post to handle their normal mail after it arrives in Thailand,

for express delivery they use an international courier company for the handling after arrival in Thailand

Fine, good for you...I use express delivery via Royal Mail to Thailand and the Thai Postman turns up on his moped and I sign for it!!

So you are getting a special express delivery I guess!

Haha, I had a similar issue with Fedex with tv boxes for which they wanted the NBTC license.

You can't get the license once the item is in Thailand, so they wanted big money to make the issue go away.

I literally told them to put the boxes where the sun doesn't shine.

About 3 weeks later i think the boxes were delivered at my home without any money paid

Same for me, once they realise you will not pay up, they just want the issue to go away!

had some stuff sent to me from uk last year

through royal mail or parcel force as it is called now,

    express package

took 1 month and 2 days to clear customs in bkk

silly uk uses a courier company rather than thai post  for express parcels

1  month and 2 days  aaaaaarrrrggghhhhh

Up to you to check delivery options, Royal Mail do not use overseas courier firms, rather the set route is Royal Mail - Thai Postal services, I get my packages very easily.

We have similar experiences! I get at least one parcel a week and have for many years via either USPS or Royal Mail, never once had a problem.

One thing I will guarantee is if you tell DHL to return to sender you will never see a refund!

Never had a problem getting a DHL refund or Amazon or E Bay, they all cough up eventually, in addition I always pay via Paypal and Visa, so I have two further options for a refund.

  7. To be clear, the first time I was in this situation, I argued with DHL and customs etc for a month and in the end I refused the item and so they just loaded it over the fence and left it at my house, end of issue.  (No payment made)

Since then when I have fallen foul of DHL I have refused acceptance of the item and in due course received a full refund.

Lesson learnt??? Do not ever use DHL.    Rather Thai Post never an issue.

  8. In my personal opinion, its more about why Thai's in general have terrible foreign language skills, I will go as far as to say they don't even understand each other in a lot of cases, many are illiterate as well.

As for myself, yes, I am not good at speaking the Thai language, for me the problem is that living in Pattaya everything is in the English language...I feel that if I lived in a Thai village I would learn easily.

I can speak and write German, speak Greek and French and of course English to a good standard.

For me the issue is that I simply cannot manage so many different languages in my head...ie 4 or 5 different language words for a subject.

It is stupid to argue one way or the other. It is really a personal decision, and your decision is to try to do without a/c. Respect.

I also choose not to use a/c and for the same reasons as you. I get sniffles and coughs in a/c rooms. Another very good reason to try to acclimatise to the weather here is to save a considerable amount of money.

Can it be done? Of course. I've lived in Thailand for almost 30 years and I can't remember when I last turned on an aircon in my house or hotel room. I always use a fan instead (ceiling fans are best) and when conditions allow I open windows and doors (with mozzy screen) and let the air flow through the room/ building. I sleep naked and wear light cotton clothing during the day.

I tend to agree with you, many friends of mine took a tip I felt worthile and that is keep the fan on a slow speed and not directly blowing on your body, if you have the fan on high speed you are just encouraging your body to sweat even more.

I think if you set your air con if you have one, say one hour before you sleep this will cool the walls enabling you to sleep easier without the air con being on.

Finally I'm sorry to say, there are other reasons for sweating, ie Overweight, no exercise, too much beer!!, too much food at the wrong time of day...they don't help you.

Of course the humidity does not help, but to be honest places like Hong Kong have far higher humidity all year round.

    Good luck!!

They put me to sleep when I had a gastroscopy at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital and it was over before I knew it.  I also had an ultrasound and an EKG and none of the tests showed anything and cost around 12,000, as I recall.

Eventually, I needed an emergency gastrectomy at Bangkok Hospital Medical Center at a cost of 1.6 million, and my stomach problems are a thing of the past.

So what did they do? A full gastrectomy is stomach removal!

I asked to be tested for helicobacter pylori as Dr Google suggested that’s what I had.
It cost just over 3k at Sukhumvit hospital Ekkamai.
I blew into a bag then took a tablet which I believe was radioactive urea. I then had to lie on my left side for 5 minutes followed by sitting up for 15 minutes and then blew into a bag again.
Came back an hour later and test was negative. Peace of mind though.

Sent from my iPhone using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app

Quite surprised at the test they gave you, still tests change!

I was always of the thought that a stool test is the main test..  A point to note is that H.Pylori can be a precursor causing stomach Cancer...which I have 1st hand experience of!

  12. Before you start spending etc please consider Helibacter Pylori

One of the leading causes of stomach problems is an infection from the Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria. More than 50% of the world's population has H. pylori in their upper gastrointestinal tracts. Infection is much more common in developing countries than Western countries.

Some common H. pylori symptoms are severe and persistent stomach pain, bloating, burping, bad breath, appetite loss, and nausea.

It is a very common type of infection the world over. However, often people do not show any H. pylori symptoms for years.     H. pylori infection can cause ulcers.

The stomach contains acid that breaks down food during the digestion process. A coating protects the stomach from the acid, but H. pylori bacteria damage this protective lining and make it possible for the acid to irritate the stomach.

The irritation can cause inflammation and ulcers.h.pylori symptoms that indicate presence of ulcers can be Persistent stomach pain; can differ in intensity. Bloating,  Burping etc.

Heli bacteria Pylori can cause a lot of damage inside the digestive tract and stomach if untreated.

Ok enough of that...can it be diagnosed/ Yes a simple stool test

Can it be treated? Yes, a combination of specific anti-biotics and an anti inflammatory taken for 2-3 weeks followed by a further test for negative result.

I suggest you go to Lifecare Lab, they in my opinion will not cheat you and are fair in price, note this test is a specific test and costs about 500 baht.

    See;  http://lifecare.siam2web.com/?

    Best Paul

Some of the common drugs that are used in a triple therapy treatment include:

    • clarithromycin
    • proton-pump inhibitors (PPI), such as lansoprazole (Prevacid), esomeprazole (Nexium), pantoprazole (Protonix), or rabeprazole (AcipHex) or Omeprazole
    • metronidazole (for 7 to 14 days)
    • amoxicillin (for 7 to 14 days)

    All available in Thailand.

  13. Has it changed?  Its bigger, the Worlds cheaper and easier to get round places and there is more choice!

It was a typical 3rd World tourist place and still is, that's not saying bad about Pattaya, that's life.  Don't look at Pattaya being typical of Thailand, there is choice of where you go and what you do, get used to it and make your choices!

  14. I have a good friend, British age 77, married to a Thai lady age 70. They have a 5 million baht oldish house paid for.

He does not drink and there outgoings are very low, he has after recent health costs 400k in the bank and a UK pension income of £600 monthly, on that they live comfortably.

He has tried to sell the property for as low as 2 million, but nobody is interested as there are far too many properties available.

However now because of the impending rules what can he do?

  15. The clear main problem here is that businesses, Hotels, restaurants etc and private homes do not have to accept  / pay for refuse collection, ie If a home does not pay the monthly refuse collection, then there house is simply not charged and no refuse collected, so that house just dumps there rubbish around the corner etc.

The same for Hotels, restaurants etc, no obligation to remove rubbish etc, so just conveniently dumped somewhere.  (Usually the nearest dark street etc)

So ultimately its the Pattaya Authority that are clearly at fault, no regulations etc.

Finally beach areas etc, should be a responsibility of the Authority and they do not care anyway!!

I see your point, but we can't expect someone suffering from apparent mental illness to have such rationale thoughts as you're describing.

Quite right, mental illness is just that! I think that at that time, your thought patterns are not clear and that's why this happens, I don't think many suicides are planned etc in many cases, they just happen.

So sorry for family and friends RIP

Get the parents in. It is the only way. I would videotape them and show how badly the ringleaders are and show the parents.

When the parents are finished with them, I would look at some team-building with either a psychologist or some other expert - it is a private school and the parents or school should have the money.

Put the frighteners on the parents - tell them the truth that this kind of behaviour leads to really bad behaviour when they get older and invariably a lot of them will end up in jail or worse!

Absolute.ly the best way, and have a weekly report sent to the parents, show the child it first!
