  1. Well that's strange as I applied successfully online three weeks ago, they opened the online banking, sent me the forms and I just sent them back two days ago with my proof of ID notarized documents.

I think its probably gossip? I opened a new account with them about 3 weeks ago, the account details came through a few days ago, and its online now, no problems.

  2. As a previous comment stated First Direct Bank which is owned by HSBC but operate under slightly different rules are very good. They will send a debit / credit overseas and by registered or express post if required.

However it always helps if you make sure by first direct messaging service that they are aware where you are going abroad and when before travels.

I thought I had lost my card recently and they set up very easily a video conference call with me, this can be effected on any android phone or tablet or laptop with a camera etc. I showed them proof of id ie passport plus entry stamp over the video call and that was that, sorted!

As far as I know they are the only bank offering this service!

  3. The driver at faults insurance should pay for the loss of your vehicle during the repair period.

    That's standard in U.S.

If you chat with a Thai lawyer which I have had to do in same situation, you will be told its a no fault accident, and any claim should be passed to the driver at faults insurance by your hire car firm. The clause cannot be enforced in your contract in a no fault accident.

  4. Santander 12 acount is only available to UK residents, unless you lie, and tax is deducted

To qualify for an account :You must permanently reside in the UK (excluding the Channel

Islands and the Isle of Man). If you are a Crown employee serving overseas or are married to or in a civil partnership with aperson who performs such duties, you must retain a permanent residential address in the UK for the account to remain open.
Also rates on annuities are very very low and lets not forget, once invested in an annuity you cannot generally ever change it!

3% in Santander 123 account, max 20 000 GBP, and can have 3 accounts if married

There are loads of other small accounts, if you use them all you can invest about 120k GBP and get reasonable rate of return.

You could of course look at purchasing an annuity

  5. the carpet in your vios is NOT glued to the floor.

Remove the seats and plastic trims and remove carpet. have it cleaned properly.

Quite correct!! The carpets are not glued down.

But the biggest problem is that if you don't remove the carpets and clean and dry thoroughly is that just the damp will rust through your floor pan within 18 months...I have seen this in the UK and definitely Thailand.

I had to weld many rusted through areas under the carpets in a Honda Jazz, 4 years old for a friend of mine.

  6. Having been in a similar situtation, they need a search warrant, unless they can provide prior evidence of law breaking.

And as we know Thais in general can have loss of face, so it would not be beyond belief for evidence to be planted.

You are in your right to state how many can enter and to be present in each room and to film the search....sounds excessive? Not if you want to be in the clear!

  7. A friend of mine in Pattaya makes top quality pies, but as its low season he is lookling for new business, so if anyone wants his contact then message me for his number.

The Thai wife who speaks english delivers as long as a reasonable amount.

Pork Pies, Steak, Steak and Kidney, Steak and Mushroom, Minced steak and onion and also with chicken istead of steak!

    Also sausage rolls.

They are all about 60-65 baht. Very tasty!!

  8. Below comments are correct, other than the fact that you need to check how long an IDP can be used, ie the country it is being used in, can stipulate 3 or 6 months of use at one time. Also note you must have the actual foreign licence as well when presenting an IDP.

Those international licenses have not been valid in Thailand for years. You are expected to get a Thai license even if you only come here for one day. This is of course just another racket to collect BS fines. The "police" prefers if you do not have a license so you will have to pay the fines.

Of course this is completely wrong. As Farma has suggested, it is an IDP that is necessary.

  9. Effected this yesterday!

You will need Passport and police report, {note that they insist on a Thai police report, not one from police abroad} see the girl at top of stairs at 1st desk, then sign form, line up to pay 255 baht at desk 3, (Car licence charge, also the charges are printed in English on the wall, so that is the correct amount) then line up for new photo, finished!

Takes depending on luck about 45 minutes.

Note : Its not a new licence, so will still finish at existing lost licence date.

  10. I effected first time for tax refund last year on savings interest in February,(Pattaya / Jomtien tax offices, received cheque two weeks later for 17,000.

    Very easy for little effort.

Been there today and completed this year claim.

    Procedure:

Go to your banks before March and ask for taxation certificate for each and every passbook.

Go to Jontien Revenue office and complete paperwork to register and get an Tax card.

Then complete claims for refund at same office.

    Requirements:

    Tax certificates

Photopcopy of every page of passbooks

    Photocopy of Passport

Proof of address, ie a bill etc.

Easy as that, but can be easier if you have a thai with you, but really not neccesary, just a smile and they help you.

Message me if you need more info?

    Best Paul

  11. If only you read the terms at booking.com!

You will see they establish your identity by your Credit card, but virtually all the bookings are pay on arrival, and the credit card has not been debited by Booking.com. (You will see on the boooking if you have to pay in advance which is very seldom)

However failure to cancell a booking or not arriving will create a debit cancellation charge, which will have been highlighted at the time of booking.

Its a good system and I have used many times without a problem in various countries.

    Easy really!

  12. Having lived in Thai owned Condos and houses, it helps to understand there logic.

If you move into a property with broken items, then it is likely they will remain like that, ie You need to get the landlord to repair / replace before moving in, if not good luck!

Likewise there attitude is "Well it worked when you moved in, so you mut have broken it, so you fix!

The first thing they will ask is, have you serviced the air con? Most expect you to pay for this, I suugest you request a service before worrying about how much etc.

Of course thats unfair, and if its broken through age..wear and tear, then spoken to nicely they will often replace it.

You will find thats how they treat Thai's to whom they rent to as well, its not a foreigner attitude.

    Good luck!

  13. The basic principle is that you have to pay UK tax on all income arising from the UK. Your tax residence status gives you the option to receive certain income gross, that is with no basic rate of tax deducted at source, but you must still account to the UK HMRC for your UK sourced income unless your total UK based income is less than the UK Personal Allowance. But, be aware, the U.K. Personal allowance may well be reduced to zero in future years.

You say you are non resident having lived here some years, but have you informed the UK Inland Revenue and have they given you non resident status, its not automatic you know...have you kept up your tax returns? You still have to effect them UNTIL told by I R that they are happy with your status etc, you see its up to you to communicate with them!

Also they will require to see any income earnt world wide be it from working or investment income ..dividends etc, before any decision. But all income derived within the UK is generally liable to tax less personal allowances.
