  1. I was in an accident a few weeks ago, pick up slammed into the motorbike i was on. Broke my nose and rooted my leg/ankle, the motorbike I was on wanted money from me for the accident. I just ignored him and left, if they are driving people around they are poor and without power, tell your friend to ignore them, threaten to call the police for harassment and he will quickly give up.

  2. I hate to say this, but Child labor isn't the most evil thing on earth. If anything it might even save a few children from going without food. Sure you could leave them orphans to starve on the street, or prey some charity comes along, but why not exploit them if they in a way need it themselves. Thailand should have better social service to combat this, and is far more than wealthy enough to protect its children to at least some basic international standard. While Bangladesh on the other hand, and countries which are extremely high population there are less options for the government to help.

  3. Just out of interest, do the original owners of studio have anything to do with your establishment? (I use to drink and party there from like 14-18ish), I went the other day for dinner and have to say you have made the place a lot nicer, really liked the variety of sports you had on.

  4. "During the raids, the CSD police officers kept receiving phone calls reportedly from a senior policeman asking them not to seize certain documents."

dam_n it, now it is going to be left up to those in the station to destroy it! I mean does anyone seriously think anything positive will come out of this, if anything I expect one corrupt official to perhaps be moved to an 'inactive post' and a new better at hiding his corruption figure to turn up instead. TiT.

  5. I've taught journalism at the university level for six years running now, and one of the units I teach is regarding government control and censorship of the media. Disturbingly, each year I have more and more current examples of problems in Thailand to share with my students. In that time, I've had editors at the Bangkok Post and producers at Channel 11 tell me that they have no choice but to tow the government line on most controversial issues. As a westerner, it's a continual shock to me. My students handle it better than I do--like water off a duck's back--it's normal to them.

Peforming content analysis of the NY Times before the Iraq invasion reveals equally troubling conclusions. The propaganda supplied by what is seen as a free media is far far more effective than the propaganda supplied by what is seen as a partially censored media which in turn is far far more effective than the propaganda supplied by a totally controlled media system.

The western media isnt as free as people think it is. The Thai media is worse. The important thing is to understand the reality of it all and not accept the myths.

Saying that happened in the west doesn't make it any more right.

Who watches the news anymore anyway? Turn on CNN right now, you'll hear some crap about mumbai last year, and something terrible is happening far away from you... Every time. OOOOO BUT OBAMA HOSTED SINGH IN THE WHITE HOUSE!!! international news at its best, especially the Larry King live yesterday where they spent 30 minutes talking about the food presented in the white house... informative.

I guess I watch the news, but unlike Thai's (no offence) I am more likely to look outside the box and question it, and I guess the issue here from the OP is about the Thai government making a fool out of itself...

  6. Sukhumvit soi 16

Great access to asoke (especially if you can cut accross with a bike), great access to Rama 4, great access to sukhumvits 22 24 and 26, thus to sukhumvit aswell. Plus if I wish to go further its maximum 1km of traffic before the high way. Food land, 7-11s and family marts all along the soi, and you have the option of 2 different MRT stations and a BTS all within 10 baht motorbike range. Its awesome.

  7. If something is sent via Ordinary Mail it will be delivered to your Address unless the Thai Customs Department has decided that it is Dutiable.

In this case you will receive an official Notification, complete with a Reference Number for the package, to go and collect the package at a specific Post Office; the notiifcation also tells you how much Duty and VAT you have to pay when you collect it.

You will need to take your Passport or other official I.D..

If you cannot collect the package personally you can send someone else but they must have a Power of Attorney from you, together with a signed (by you) copy of your I.D. and their own I.D..

I have never spent more than 10 minutes at Prakhanong Post Office when collecting anything.

No idea who "told you" to go to various places because as I say the established system is that you will receive written notification.

If you use DHL or any other Courier Company you will always pay Import Duty and VAT - perhaps 50% of the times I have been sent items via the Thai Postal system the package has been delivered directly to my Office, i.e. I have not been charged Duty; it's the luck of the draw but at least you have a chance of getting it in Duty Free.

Originally the first person to tell me Phrakanong post office was my land lady, who I assumed could read Thai as she was the one explaining to me what to do with the paper work and where to go. However the post office sent me to the next one which was wrong from Phrakanong. For 6.50 and 20$ postage I hope they don't bother, its an authenticator for a digital online account (like you have for banking)... Didn't arrive yesterday like I expected... Lame

  8. Last time I shipped something over seas I had a nightmare experience with the post office. First I was told to pick up the package in Phrakhanong, then I was told that it wasn't there. After a while they asked me to go to another post office location near the Silom area, I can't remember where it was called but I actually got taken to the wrong building the first time then to another to find out again that my package wasn't there. They told me here that it was at the post office by the railway station, anyway needless to say it was getting late in the day and I was hoping to get my package and get home. I got there, it was utter chaos, I had no idea what was going on or where to go thank god the thai staff just basically took care of everything for me and directed me where to sit and wait, in the end I ended up waiting there for the entire after noon and was given a ticket for the next morning 8 am...

I wasn't even going to get my package that day, so I asked on the way out if my motorbike taxi friend could pick it up, they said this was fine so I gave him the things and told him to bring it my office at 9 am. Next morning, he comes without the package, they wanted me to come in person and pick it up. So I went back, by this point my ticket to pick it up now had to be replaced to wait, this time only 2 hours waiting there before finally my ticket came up and I could pick up my box. They also charged me 1400 baht in taxes even though the item's total value was about 50$ US... A bit high imo but I guess when you cant buy the goods here you really pay for it.

Anyway that is my experience, now here is my question. I had something else sent to me after purchasing online and had it UPS world wide express delivered. The items value is only 6.50$ US, will I have to go pick it up again? I thought mail was meant to come to your house... I hate internet shopping in this country if I have to go get it again. I thought if you ordered something to your house it was saving your lazy fat ass from having to go anywhere to get it...

I am considering going out and buying a new item if they tell me I have to go to the post office again, I know your not fortune tellers but any experiences to help alleviate my worries while I wait?

  9. What are you doing after 2:00 AM that's in any way worthwhile? Go home and go to bed.

What are you doing at 6 am which is so dam_n worth while. I don't want to hear its natural and respectable and blah blah my grandmother gives that argument. What is so healthy and holy to old people about being up at early enough to see as much daylight as humanly possible. (and yes I am assuming he wakes up early)

My grandmothers day consists of about 14 hours. From 6am to 8pm, I wonder are older people actually scared of these extra hours, my grandmother will often say that I am 'stupid' for staying out all hours, and that the way everyone else works should tell me there is something wrong with me, but seriously what is it that makes people so sure that nothing good or interesting can happen late at night?

    We have invented lights.

  10. I was not required to take part of this and totally ignored until I took out my phone and to take a photo!

Did this ever change things ! They then become super polite.

    interesting tip about the photo.

i actually got shaken down in Paris in a similar way once when i was 20ish. funny thing was, i had a bad cold and in my pocket was lots of used tissues. the police didn't know what they were at first until i mimed blowing my nose. the gendarme dropped the tissue pretty quick and send me on my way.

Never mind the photo, put it on video mode, so you can actually record the actions and words.

Sgt Somchai will not want to put himself in such a position to be held accountable for his bs, usually works best for traffic cops and the bs they dream up, number plates too small springs to mind.

Was with a friend who offered to go to the police station and pay the fine for the so called infringement instead of the on the spot justice, Sgt Somchai waved him on.

I recommend the photo trick as well, it has helped get me out of their little stop and searches many times. If they get snippy about you taking photos just say "FACE BOOK NEKRUB" and they will either understand or stop caring.

  11. 227 on my shaman alone, but its up to 240 now cause I started playing again... 69-80 took me 4 days -.-

Plus I have my pally mage ect with time on it, but I literally lived on my shaman for a while... My maid keeping me alive.

  12. Roadblocks and searches are pretty common in bangkok imo, there are probably 4 or 5 in my area now. Every 2 - 3 days there is one on main sukhumvit road between 23 and 33 not sure of the exact location but I have driven through it at night several times.

A friend of mine was arrested outside the PMs house (sukhumvit 23 checkpoint, its permanent) he was caught with a joint on him. Cost him 2,600 baht for his freedom... Its cheap if you are fluent Thai...

They work on <snip>, I'll say that much.

  13. It's good, the naval battles were a long time coming. The AI is very good especially when it comes to the styles of warfare of various factions. However I still love rome, because you can watch rome on TV and it makes you want to play, this you cant watch empires and be inspired to play. Plus the cavalry seem more effective in Rome, and who doesn't like watching cavalry battles :)?

  14. I was a dedicated world of war craft player, i mean absolutely hard core (227 days played on my shaman alone) and I managed to kick it cold turkey, but after a recent flurry of emails from blizzard about my account being upgraded for free and giving me 60 days to play, then banning my account when I didn't react and forcing me to fight for it to get it back I find myself terribly terribly tempted to play world of war craft again. Needless to say I can't play it like I was before 15+ hours a day but I will be able to put in some time.

But is it worth it? Will I be tempted to get back into my endless grinding and leveling which is world of war craft?

I finally just got my account back, although I am not sure why I bothered fighting for it... I wonder if it is some system in order to attract my interest again? Can't say it has failed can we.

So what do you think? Can I find people here in Bangkok who will be playing with me? Should I just drop it? I don't know what I should do haha.

    get a life - seek help :)

I have a life, it just required very little sleep and a lot of games. I do real life things as well, I work play paint ball 3 times a week(and travel with the team playing various international events), have a full time steady girlfriend who isn't a random Thai bar girl. In fact I am probably part of the 1% who didn't come here and meet a Thai *cough* lady *cough*. . . I only dabble in the international school girls here, love em.

But I am not sure if I can be bothered with world of warcraft again, it was fun and easily mind numbing but I just don't know.
