  1. Well if TOT are administering it, expect there to be blackout periods where the system won't work, connectivity issues where the system keeps disconnecting and if they are quoting speed of 2mbps then it willin fact be 1mbps or slower.<BR><BR>I would say that TOT are the worlds most unreliable internet service provider, compared with other companies in Thailand.

Nobody will ever convince me that anything good will come from TOT. Wrong company.

  2. Yet another pathetic comment from the 'I haven't got a clue' Ministry. I'll bet that the minister in charge of Telecomms and communications doesn't even know how to use a computer

With millions of people using this cheap service it would probably take 2 years to load a single page.....

 Your disrespect is misplaced. The Minister does not have to use a computer! He must be CONNECTED!

  3. <BR>We are in negotiation at the moment with Big C , to write a weekly column. There will also be a Dear Ruth please advise ( personal relation help line) , we are again trying to negotiate with Big C & Screamingeagle to see if they will look after it.<BR>Crusty, will be contributing to the legal advise section.<BR>Hope this helps.<BR>
<BR><BR>Apologies for not being a 'Samuian'<BR>OP was a question by a dissatisfied Member.<BR>The posts above explain why Samui life is so boring.  Eat it.<BR>
  4. Quality children starts with responsible parents.

How many chidren are being abandoned into the care of grandparents or other relatives, and how many husbands walk out of their pregnant wives?

Arjan is spending too much time with his books and computer and lacking fieldwork.

I suspect the incentives could be aimed at redressing this bad parenting issue.

It once was families of 3 and 4 generations all stayed together and were mutually supportive,

but economic necessity has pushed more of this child rearing onto grandmothers solely.

But in the past they often still did this duty, while the younger worked the fields.

But then they also came home at night, not stuck in the big city for logistical reasons.

Slowly, but surely, we are getting to the root of the problem.

Quality parents = quality offspring ... whatever that means??

For how long mom & dad must be coming home at night???

(the minimum I know,- it is called ovulation period ??)

Hate to sound offensive, but delegating offspring education to grannies (people of the past?) results in overall retardation process, which accumulates with years significally, sometimes down to the year 2553???...

    Poor Professor ....Higgins....:blink::ermm:

  5. Actually I'm selling 2 of my computer cause i'm upgrading to bigger machine.... how cheap do you mean?

:)evanson, without trying to flog you anything, here is my advice. Go to IT city centre. look at S/H desk tops and prices they ask. Offer 50% spot. Can't go much cheaper. You are a generous guy... (unless there are alterior motives?...)

Good luck in a good deed

  6. I have read through all 4 pages. Needless to say how sorry I am for all involved...

Perhaps a slightly different angle on the variation of the safety on water in Thailand.

I live virtually on the beach and every day can observe as well as experience the blunt criminal disregard of all maritime rules and laws by operators of numerous recreation watercraft. The TIT explanation does not apply in these matters, because the MARITIME laws are International and apply to Thailand. Water jet scooters, speed boats, towed banana boats and motorised fishing boats operate within 10-20m from the sandy beaches with people swimming in water. Thai maritime authorities NEVER enforce any laws. There have been 'accidents', some fatal due to this. Nobody sees these as accidents waiting to happen. I may be off the topic, but maybe this is a bigger picture, related to the topic?

  7. If you have ever eaten somtom you have probably eaten this. It is pha lah please excuse my spelling of it I amnot sure how it is spelt but it is just your basic fermented fish so common here.

Yeaa, may be. But to me it looks like the inside of pink jelly-fish digestion tract.

Anyway, nobody is kicking Thai food here. Most of it is lovely, if you don't mind your food overdone, overspiced and sweet-sour-salty-bitter all in one. Alternatively, you can always get a beautiful meal in most 5* hotels on Sukhumvit @ 2,000Bt/person.

P.S. Can anybody tell me what are my neighbours cooking everyday that smells like 5 days dead dog? I don't know how it looks, - avoid their place like plague. My wife thinks it is this salty cutlets of barracuda looking fish preserved in some kind of oil???... GOD! It's really bad!

  8. When using the telephone, do you hear any crackling noise or static? If so, you have a wiring and/or filter problem.

This is all I know, except the fact that I have one phone line and the phone and my PC are connected via a kind of a gadget the size of a matchbox with one side into the phone socket and the other side with double outlet (one to phone, the other to modem).

That matchbox sized gadget is called a "splitter" -- a device used to isolate phone and ADSL signals. Have you tried connecting directly without the splitter? I suggest you try this as there's always a distinct possibility the splitter could be faulty.

Also check your ADSL modem stats and post SNR and Line Attenuation figures here. Take note of any excessive errors, namely Super Frame (CRC) and HEC errors. The numbers don't lie and could go a long way in explaining what/where the problem is.

Thanks, Supernova. The 'splitter' is fine. When I talk on the phone with PC running,- no ill effects.

When I do have Internet, everything is OK, including image and sound.

When there is no Internet, pluging in directly does not help, I tried.

Today, from 10am till 1-30pm my YM could not sign in. As it is signing automatically, a smal box appeared about 10 times ' we are very busy,-try later'. When I tried to get GOOGLE or Yahoo,- 'page not available'. For almost 4hrs!!!. Now I am OK, writing this. I must be mad. What is the use of having an expensive PC ? Every day is like this!!!

  9. Many possible reasons for your troubles.

First step definitely is to check your ADSL line quality like Pib said.

You will have to access the modem's web interface, login usually is admin/tot.

    try

    http://192.168.1.1 or

    http://192.168.0.1

Another idea: take your modem to your neighbour and see how the connection is there. If it works fine, then the (inhouse) cable to your apartment is the troublemaker (just as siamect suggested).

Be aware that the inhouse cabling is not TOTs responsibility. However, they should at least have had the line checked when they installed the modem or should stop by and do it now.

Otherwise I recommend contacting your local TOT office, not the 'global' hotline. And as always in Thailand: make your point and be persistent, but stay calm and friendly.

    welo

welo, Pib, siamect et al. Thank you all.

Problem is, I am not a comp Wiz. All I can see is that I can not have internet when I want it.

My modem is @Bell and the local TOT guys gave it clear bill of health. The 'inhouse cabling' is a possibility, but on the other hand a) this is an intermittent problem, rather than constant; B) in a building of over 100 units there are usually only 5-6 present and/or using internet; c) I am using this 192.168.1.1 whatever-it-is; d) I am 200km from BKK and obviously am in the 'retard' category (challenged?); e) in all the cases when there is no internet my telephone is working!...

This is all I know, except the fact that I have one phone line and the phone and my PC are connected via a kind of a gadget the size of a matchbox with one side into the phone socket and the other side with double outlet (one to phone, the other to modem).

    Any problem with this?

    Still very miserable... :bah:

  10. I was annoyed. I became agitated. I am hopping mad now. And there is nowhere to turn.

The situation in Thailand with Internet provider has reached the dead end.

I am currently using ADSL with TOT. Not by choice, but there is no alternative in my area.

Every time I switch my PC on I am anxious. In 7 out of 10 cases all I get is:

The page you are looking for is not available or

We are currently very busy. Please come again later or

The YMessenger has experienced difficulties in signing in

    etc., etc., etc.

The real pain is, these things happen at 6-00am, or on weekends, or on public holidays, or at 10-00pm.

If I were running a business, I would be loosing it. As it is, - I am loosing my mind!!!

Of course I have rang 1100 complaining. With very little help.

Of course they are always 'working on the problem'.

Of course I have checked my PC and my Modem. No problem there.

Of course I was told 'the optic fibre cable is damaged'. It helps to know that in the same building there is Internet in the office and in other apartments working!

I understand, that the major problem is MONOPOLY. No healthy competition, hence no services provided. Or is this just ME?

Would like to see other people opinions, advice, etc. :)

  11. you mean being TONE DEAF , which is common: you sing like a tin pan, you're it.

Back on topic...the education problems in Thailand have everything to do with Thai culture. If this is allowed to change, many other things things will change accordingly.

And this is exactly why NOTHING will be allowed to change. Not by this, or any other Government.

And all the protests in Thailand WON'T change a da_mn thing as far as education goes. Keep em' stupid is the Order Of The Day as had been done since day-dot in this country.

Correction. This is only the beginning. Things will change, without the permission. It would be quicker, nicer and with less of a 'bang' if led by the Government. But they never will. And if they wanted to, - they will never be permitted. So, my friend 'scotbeve', wait and you will see. The comedy will change into a drama, the drama into a tragedy, but the show will go on. As for me, - I hope not to see it...

  13. An easy win for this, and I am sure that it will never happen, would be for Thailand to utilize the scads of well qualified non-Thai folks scattered around the country. There are retired doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers, chemists, accountants and others with time on their hands who would not mind helping out with tutoring various subjects.

    TheWalkingMan

    May I walk with you?

I'm a duly qualified educator. Would be happy to help. But the rules of 'engagement', - Thai Immigration Laws expressly prohibit this.

Even on a no-pay, volunteer work basis. Doesn't make sense?... Oh, yes, it does!...

How can anybody allow 'low life children' of poor families speak better English than their own lazy, spoiled brats attending expensive exclusive private schools!

I am also qualified to teach Science, Maths and Physics...

But the whole fabric of this society may break, if this happens...

:lol:So, you were right. This will never happen.

  14. There is no national curriculum from what I can gather. Worse, the teachers get to write their own course work.

My wife asked me to help her little sister with some home work. When I saw what her teacher had given her, I couldn't believe it.

This is a mid to high priced School in Bangkok. The English exercises made no sense at all.

When I laughed I seemed to offend.

The usual social rules. "Don't complain, its not polite"

The government could easily adopt a national curriculum from an English speaking country. Its not the teachers fault, in my opinion its the governing body.

Ever since I am in Thailand I have seen this problem.

Like many other problems this is not going away.

    No standardised National Curriculum.

    No qualified teachers.

No salaries based on merits, only on Seniority.

No Questioning of the policies from the Top.

Drill based learning instead of questioning and understanding.

Authoritarian attitudes from top to bottom.

    Critical approach is not accepted.

The universal answer to anything is TIT.

The natural result on a National level is ROT.

  15. ;)A very interesting and thought provoking thread.

Nothing original in the answers. Forget, forgive, love thy neighbour, peace, etc. For every quotation based advice, there is an 'anti-quote', often from the same source.

NFS, from your belated description of the offense (stolen jewelry, physical hurt) I can only envy you,- so easy a choice you face!

Material loss, physical pain, 7 years ago?! And you are still cooking all this stuff in your head? Sorry for you.

Believe me, there are much worse cases in life.

  16. The writer should check his sources....I thought it had been proved on TV that US soldiers from Vietnam had very little to do with the establishment of Pattaya as a Disneyland for adults.

Other than that cant really argue with anything else which is being written

After all said, the Land is still Smiling...

No problem, ... just remember: 'THE SMILE CAN MEAN ANYTHING', except what we think.

  17. About 4 years ago whilst staying in BKK, my Bangkok Bank account was cleared of 100,000 baht after my ATM card was copied from a Bangkok Bank ATM outside the 7/11 near Sukhumvit Soi 22. It was Bangkok Bank who contacted me to advise of this problem. Despite obtaining a police report and holding meetings with Bangkok Bank head office in Silom Road, I was never able to get this money reimbursed, even though it was absolutely not my fault.

However, the bank was kind enough to waive the 500 baht fee that is usually charged for issue of a new ATM card :)

    Simon

So, where are we now? Thailand is not safe. Bangkok is not safe. Pattaya is not safe.

Thai Banks are not safe. Sell everything and get ot? Maybe even can't take your money with you?

Questions, questions... Who knows the answers? :D

  18. Phuket. Easy. Has the lot beauty and entertainment. Ignore the Patong haters, there is plenty to do throughout the enitre island. Variety is the spice, so they say.

I didn't see all of them - to many. Speaking of the big ones, for me Chang takes the cake. No 1 out of Samed, Phuket, Samui. But it depends on what one is looking for. :)

  19. A couple of weeks ago I saw a couple of Thais wearing t-shirts with large swasticas on the front. I can't believe they had any idea of what that symbolizes.

    Padfoot. I'm sure they do!

Just as as they know what Che Gevara meant and still means to the world.

But my question is to Big Brother George: Why do you close too many posts that lead to free, open and often interesting discussion on this Forum? Afraid that there is no money in it? Or just Afraid?

And, please, try to answer yourself, instead of these two cronies of yours. Tell them they can take off their dark glasses. They are transparent anyway. :)

  20. Only a monster would order anyone to fire live rounds at women and children. It was the lowest point in British history when we behaved the same way in India.

The 10 year old boy was killed by soldiers?

The sentencing is very swift... any yellow shirts sentenced yet?

The lowest point in Thai history can not be reached... flat bottom plateau?

Let me see,... if the reds win, the sentences will be commuted, and the yellows will take their place. TIT. :)

  21. I said this before, and I can say it again. This is not the end of story.

Thailand needs a real change. In internal policies. The upper classes naturally want to retain control, but can not. The lower classes can not afford to continue putting up with social injustice. The gap between the tiny minority and vast majority is too big, too obvious and can not be masked by traditional methods used in the past.

Calls for Democracy are futile. This country is not ready for it.

Calls for hard line are futile. A lot of blood will be spilt. But this will not bring the change.

Calls for yet another military coup are futile. Thais had too many, with no change in sight.

I am neither 'red', nor 'yellow'.

I do not have the solution. It is up to Thais.

But I hope not to see another Revolution in any country. They are too costly. And everybody loses. Big way!

  22. A very elegant speculation.

Now what would be done in your country?

I would rather see these girls counselled by a child protection specialist, the kind of

maid duties they performed verified, the police investigate and find their 'employer', and depending on the outcome, the law should be applied. Law? :D

And skip telling me Police can not find him. There is always the 'agent' who arranged this sordid affair. At least by your version.

My version? Huh! That's a good one. Lets hear your version..... :)

You are volunteering to counsel, train & investigate 2mil+ migrant (mainly illegal - although they want be here) workers in Thailand? Oh yeah, the police could find them if they wanted to, they can do anything if they put their minds to it, however the police are not willing to waste their time unless the situation falls right in their laps.

Anyway - back to the topic at hand.

IMO the author of the news article does not have the facts to the case and is sensationalizing to sell a story.

Chill out, Rogue. The facts are: - there are no facts, no follow-up, no news!

You offered a version, a speculation. It even could be a right one. I was dismayed by Police inaction and indifference. By the way, this case 'DID FALL IN THEIR LAP'.

As to the girls being guilty of illegally coming in, the man who you suggested 'paid per head' and is now out of pocket (poor fellow!) is guilty of as much. Or, maybe, much more?... The point is,- nobody cares...

So, no need to plunge into an argument. I have none with you. Keep the ice-pack around your head. And the balls in your pants. At least in this case. Cheers. :D
