1. i have also been told they are attracted to purfumes/after shaves,

dont know if this is true or not. But the gf wears a load of purfume and gets eaten loads, where as i dont and hardly ever get bitten...

and no, i dont mean i wear the gf's purfume

  2. Buy a phrase book and read it on the plane over here.

For what your going to want to learn and need for your holiday it probably isnt worth trying to get yourself any formal lessons, so either grab a book or kidnap a local, ply him with beer/whisky etc and learn what you can.

If, of course, you want to try your hand at lessons there are some very good language schools around (i havent been, so i cant recommend anywhere) and for basic communication your not going to be wanting to go too deep, i guess.

  3. I work for a very sucsessful E-Commerce company on Phuket, and i work as a programmer for them. Half decent Internet is available but its a tad expensive.

The introduction of ADSL to the island will change this, but as with anything thats going to take some time to filter through to everyone (who wants it)

I cant see Phuket competeing with Singapore, but i can see things improving (slowly)

  4. Your holiday will be whatever you make it, if you sit around and wait for things to come to you all your going to get is a numb bum and working girls crawling all over you.

If you go exploreing you will find lots of interesting things to see and do.

Phuket isnt your home town of <insert town name here> its a tropical paradise, if you go explore it then you wont be disappointed, also there are soo many small islands off Phuket itself that are worth looking at, just relax, enjoy your time and go see a few things.

If your looking for an action packed adventure holiday then maybe this area isnt the best place, but there will still be plenty of thigns to do if you like that kind of holiday, as a previous poster mentioned, sea canoes, bungy jumps, diving, go karts, paragliding should help keep the adrenaline pumping...

Hope you enjoy your holiday, i'm sure you will find something you like in phuket.

  5. Well Friday 4th of June, 10:15am and its pouring it down... cats and dogs, i tell ya!

The advice given about the beaches is spot on, take heed, that Karon beach is a known danger spot for swimmers and its not uncommon to hear of a few people die off there every year or so. ust be real careful if your in there.

Kata beach is a bit better, but still a bit dangerous this time of year, just need to watch yourself if you go swimming. I dont think its as bad as Karon beach, but which ever beach you decide to swim off, just excerise a bit of caution, take notice of the green/red flags off the beach as an indication of if its ok to swim that day or not.

Stay safe, be sensible and you'll have a great time with the family, i just hope the weather is a bit better than it is today for your holiday :o

  6. In a radical move to ease oil price pressures, Thailand is considering imposing curfews at petrol stations which, except for those on highways, will close at 10pm in an effort to lower petrol consumption.

Or maybe even drive round to the nearest Highway petrol station and fill up there

(thereby driving more, using more fuel and totaly screwing the PM's great idea!?!)

Closing the stations at 10pm and leaving highway stations open until 12 wont do didly squat.

Obviously the PM hasnt bought enough shares in the big petrol station chains, he wants to force their profits down to reduce their share prices so he can buy a load at a cheap price then lift all the restriction to push the share price back up.

Man, hes one clever mofo. :o

  7. Anyone remember reading a book called "Danny the champion of the world" as a kid?

You know the one, about the boy whos dad was a poacher and he had the idea of putting sleeping pills in the food to make the birds fall asleep...

I'm thinking a similar approach here, Xanax, bird food and give it to em when they start making a noise...

Humane way of doing it, wont kill em and more importantly the mafia owners wont have a reason to blow your knee caps off with a shotgun.

  8. My dear Wolfie.. I never knew you were single? :o

Well, for the right girl, i'm single... :D

Leading the play-boy, bright-lights, alchohol induced life-style gets a bit old after a few years or so... hehe :D

I'm approaching the time in my life where i want to find myself a nice girl and settle down, ya'know, so c'mon girls, strike whilst the iron is hot... :D

Auditions will commence at the weekend, all applications must include at least one photo and the last 6 months bank statements, copies of land deeds and any other relevant information the applicant deems important for me to make an informed decision :D

  9. Well i spent most of yesterday riding around looking for a place... (love public holidays) and saw lots of houses, nothing that fits the list of requirements and mostly around the 12k mark... Keep the ideas coming as there wasnt anything that struck me as my future home :o

  10. Madsere...

two points i'd like to raise here...

Point 1. Im no sepo, kow jai mai?

Point 2. Dont take things so <deleted> seriously, isnt it obvious were just 'avin a laff?

Take a walk down happy street, stop in the chill out bar and lighten up with a case of chang or something :o

  11. Harry - Budget around the 10,000 mark, slightly less is better for those extra Chang tokens :o

Thaigerd - Kathu is a little further than i wanted to go, but if i cant find anything else i'll come over and take a look :D

RDN - That place sounds ok, i will get the gf to give him a call today...

Thanks chaps, your all invited to the house warming party when i have one :D

  12. Moderators: Apologies if this should be in the classifieds, but i guessed it was more appropriate to put it in the phuket section :D

Well my lease is just about up on my lovely gaff in Phuket, and now i'm looking around for something different. :D

I'm ideally looking for a Thai style house, with a reasonable amount of privacy, some out door space and part furnished. Preferably 2 bed rooms, but i can make do with one for the right style house/location. Must have a telephone line, be in Chalong/Rawai area and not asking for a rental figure that looks like a telephone number...

I will consider a farang style house/bungalow and i could go a little further afield than the chalong/rawai area, the important aspects for me is the ability to be able to sit outside on an evening without someone driving/walking past every 5 minutes and staring at me. :o I would also consider an apartment if it had a decent balcony without neighbours 5 meters away, something like a penthouse apartment would be good :D

Anyone have anything like this they might want to rent out to me, or know of anything? I have been driving around but i've not found much that sparks much interest in me.

    Any info greatfully appreicated

  13. Very little (if any) Malara in Phuket, i've not heard of anyone getting it (doesnt mean people havent, just means the circles i socialise in hasnt heard of any cases)

As for Dengue, yes i know of a couple of cases in Phuket over the last year or two, but again very rare...

If your coming out on holiday, get yourself down your local GP's and get the full spread of vacinations, might as well be safer than sorry, eh? Shouldnt cost you much, if anything at all.

    Enjoy your hols mate

  14. Forget Pattaya, in fact forget speedos...

I propose the new legislation be expanded to "Only Beautiful people can wear swim wear"

Nothing worse than spending time here in LOS amongst all these lovely cuties only to find 24 stone, whiter-than-milk farangs sunning themselves on the beach, Green-peace would have a field day sometimes!

So... forget fat blokes in speedos (beleive me, i've tried) i suggest we ban all ugly fat hairy people from the beach...

That goes for the women, in fact More So for the women, gives me nightmares seeing the rolly polly look-a-likes giving it all on the beach...

  15. I dont know for sure, i've got no experience on this subject,

But, i would imagine the British govt has the right to do more or less what ever it pleases. Its not unheard of for the Uk govt to revoke a citizenship, they just cant revoke it if it leaves the person without citizenship of another country (violates human rights).

I would imagine they wouldnt do it for the scenario you explained, but if the person in question was to really piss off the govt then yes, they could find their british passport revoked.

Again this is just speculation/guess work, but there has been a case in the news recently of someone getting their british citizenship revoked by the home secutary... so yes its possible, but unlikely

  16. Every PC is different, every configuration/Setup is different, i know.

I tried to use Skype after a friend in the UK suggested it might be a good way to have voice conversations instead of MSN etc. So i went and downloaded it.

I was some what dubious due to Sharman Networks writing it, knowing full well the pitfalls and troubles with the likes of Kazaa. I decided to give it a try anyway as i'm IT literate enough to work through any spy/ad ware they may install on my PC.

I installed it, configured it and logged off, waiting for my friend to get his end set up... booted the PC up a few days later and _everything went pear-shaped, GFX drivers started screwign up, Windows got itself in a pickle and i ended up having to boot into safe mode and uninstall Skype (after about an hour or so of tryign to figure out what went wrong) - After Skype was uninstalled Windows managed toget a grip on reality again and started to behave itself.

Soooooo... if you use Skype you might want to be careful, maybe i was just unlucky and Skype screwed up some config files or something, maybe Skype wasnt responsible at all for my troubles, just seemed strange that after the install everything went wrong and after the uninstall everything was fine again.

    Just my experience

  17. i know of at least ONE sign post that clearly states...

Carry your license at all times,

Wear a helmet if your on a motorbike, wear a seatbelt if your in a car

    Dont drive drunk

and thats in a tourist area.

I am of the opinion that "Oh, im sorry officer, i didnt realise i was supposed to carry a license" is not a valid excuse, in fact its exactly that, an EXCUSE.

I agree that maybe the police could be a little bit more sympathetic, the old "i'll let you off this time, but make sure you..." but i can see that getting abused...

Maybe they should impliment a "producer" system like the UK does, if your asked to produce your documents and you cannot, for whatever reason, your given a ticket and 7 days to get down to the police station to produce your documents. I can see holes in that idea already, with tourists who are going home etc, but at least its a start.

Bottom line is... use your brain, if youve got a license, carry it with you, tourist, ex-pat, thai or farang... if you dont have a license, pay up and shut up. You wouldnt get away with it in the west, so why even contemplate it in LOS?

I dont make the rules, i just try to follow them.
