  1. As you might be driving up country you could also consider hiring a pick up ....like a Vigo ir something. They come with manual gear , run on diesel so cheaper fuel , are built stronger than saloons so that in a crash you get more protection , are higher of the ground so a better view and come with a lot of mod cons

Pick ups are not made stronger, the actual passenger compartment is much weaker than a monocoque car.

The OP from the UK has likely never driven rear wheel drive before and something as poorly weight balanced as a pick up so if nervous about manual/automatic it is just another thing to worry about. Along with maybe never having driven anything this big before.

  2. Yes the are. IMO.

Animals for food are pumped full of growth hormones (or whatever the correct term is) Chickens , cows, pigs here. Girls are apparently starting puberty earlier because of it, whether that's true I don't know.

Baby milk is obviously affected due to the cows. Here they believe the marketing to feed them it until they are 4 where in the UK etc you are told to stop at 1 year old due to possible iron problems later in life. Obviously this only affects those that can afford it, but meat, eggs will affect others.

Add to that that miidle class Thais are eating more western style foods which have more nutrition that white rice and a few bits of meat or Som Tam etc and the western food doesn't have chilli or as much chilli which flushes the food through your body.

  3. Arthur, long endless wide roads and very few corners are the very reason you dont need an Auto surely.?.burp.gif .How many U Ad.biggrin.png With an oiler truck with lo down power, you dont change as much as say a Vios or similar. I like both .

    None since Saturday. sad.png

Sussex, Surrey and Kent, well all UK B-roads and a manual = xpartytime2.gif.pagespeed.ic.V_K7hML3fS6

Chonburi and Bangkok endless straight roads full of awful drivers = saai.gif.pagespeed.ce.f25DL0fHCdW09GY8hG May as well get an auto.

  4. Most cars here are automatic, it maybe a case anyway that it's hard to find manual hire cars.

As other posters have said if they do have a manual it will be because it is the lowest cheapest spec they could buy and most likely safety features are included in that.

Before a moved here I always said automatics are boring , but with constant traffic jams, long endless wide roads and (where I am) very few corners there is little point in a manual. The only gear changing you will do round here is when someone pulls infront of you or traffic jams/queues. Plus automatics make left foot braking so easy. Again good when someone pulls across you, the ever erratic unpredictable Thai drivers and the traffic jams.

  5. No matter what the very unclear OP says or not, I can guarantee you that nobody with the name Na Ayudhya is ever going to spend one second behind bars!!

To stay within forum rules, I suggest you google the name.

They belong to the protected species..........................coffee1.gif

Probably correct but begs the question: why was she driving a Honda Civic? ( not that it's of any significance for the poor buggers who were killed through her negligence)

    A borrowed Honda civic.

  6. Most people with real money in this country don't show it, especially if the maker of that money is still alive and controls it.

There are some people with real money that do show it , but they really aren't going to ask you for money.

Then there is what 95% of the people that look like they have money are - lower class tax dodgers (as in most the business owners in this country) with a trail of credit behind them that one day has to be paid. Once the money from the family land sale runs out or they very fragile business (Thais aren't very good at coming up with something different) takes a down turn they are stuck.

    I won't say anymore...............................coffee1.gif

  7. Ok this is my opinion.

The failed/old past it rubber in the carb was not allowing enough fuel through which caused the fuel mixture to be too lean.

The lean mixture caused the internal temperature of the engine to be too hot.

This at some stage caused the head gasket to blow etc.

The head gasket failure obviously caused the over heating.

The head gasket failure caused the engine to have reduced power, effectively running on 2 or 3 cylinders.

The reduced power /usable cylinders meant the failed fuel pasage could provide enough fuel for the current needs of the engine, but the engine overheated due to the failed head gasket/low coolant/lean mixture.

After the head gasket was fixed the engine was back to 4 cylinders sucking in more air, but the failed carb couldnt provide enough fuel for the mixture.

The auto choke was compensating for this for as long as it could by enriching the mixture, until the engine said enough and stalled.

As said ask if you can see your plugs and see if you notice if the engine seems more powerful.

  8. Have you run it for 15 minutes yourself or have the mechanics and told you 15 minutes ? As in it may not be 15 minutes. Shorter ?

Do you know if it only runs for '15' minutes from cold ?

Could it be the auto choke, to be that alone 15 minutes would be too long, but it could be compensating for a too weak a mixture. After 15 minutes it's had enough of a weak mixture. Maybe the rubber seals were knackered and partially blocking the carb/jet. Without looking at the carb I couldn't say if this was possible.

Can you ask to see a spark plug and tell us what colour it is . If it's been running too rich too compensate for a long time it would be black and wettish looking. If running weak for a long time it would be white and powderish looking.
