Thailand Named 4th Most Beautiful Country Globally
spidermike007 replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
What level of credibility does US News have, when it comes to judging Thailand on it's beauty? I have traveled to 50 countries or so. Thailand does have pretty areas, but is not even in the top 30. Italy is one of the most beautiful. Thailand is nowhere close. Can one compare Bangkok to Florence? Or Pattaya to Venice? Or Pai to Tuscany? Please. Such desperation. -
Biden Weighs Supreme Court Reforms Amid Rising Controversies
spidermike007 replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Two or three terms max. And an age limit of 70. Same for a president. No one runs if over 70. Way too old for the office. Both Don and Joe are way over the hill, for this job. -
Thai PM Denies Terrorism Link to Hotel Deaths, FBI Sends Team

This is a new and bizarre way to deal with your debts. What can one even say? The hospital investment sounded a bit fishy. Japan does not likely need outside investors for construction of a hospital, does it? -
Biden Weighs Supreme Court Reforms Amid Rising Controversies
spidermike007 replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Ending lifetime appointments wound be a great thing. These justices do not deserve that, they represent one of the poorest courts in many decades, and they are highly partisan. I would also advocate adding at least six more justices, before Biden is done. -
Politics is only a small part of the problem here. The economy is still reeling after 9 years of the "Prayuth Decimation" and tremendous levels of incompetence with regard to economic policy. From what I hear new car sales are down over 40%, the used car market is dead, condo and home sales are down, and manufacturers are leaving Thailand in droves, with very little new investment coming in. Thailand is in for quite a ride over the next few years, and that doesn't even take into account the probability of a huge worldwide economic correction, which I believe is coming. Thailand has witnessed nearly 2,000 factory closures in the past year, upending its manufacturing sector that contributes nearly a quarter of its gross domestic product (GDP). “The industrial sector has slumped, and capacity utilisation has fallen below 60 per cent,” Mr Srettha told Parliament last week. “It is clear that the industry needs to adapt.” As a result, job losses jumped by 80 per cent during the same period, with more than 51,500 workers left without work, the data shows. https://www.straitstimes.com/business/thai-economy-faces-upheaval-due-to-factory-closures-cheap-chinese-imports

Mae Hong Son cracks down on inappropriate tourist behaviour
spidermike007 replied to snoop1130's topic in Isaan News
This is very serious stuff. Foreigners drinking beer on the river. Foreigners walking around in a bikini on a hot day. This could tear apart the very fabric of the nation and lead to utter and complete moral degradation. Something must be done to arrest the slide. What could happen next. We must maintain our purity. -
How will this have an impact on tourism? It was an isolated event, among folks who knew each other, and it was related to a loan gone south. This is not the same as a random murder. It will have no impact on people planning trips here.

Thai Govt Disputes Claims of Deserted Tourist Spots
spidermike007 replied to webfact's topic in Hua Hin and Cha-Am News
That's funny yeah, there's a certain subset of people who are incapable of looking within for the source of the problem, and simply cannot handle criticism. They cannot take responsibility for their own actions and admit that they might have made an error or created a problem. It is likely an indication of extremely low self-esteem, and the inability to ever establish personal self confidence. It is a blight on the land. -

Hua Hin is a very decent town, pleasant people, some bars, good food, beaches are not great, but they're okay. There are some very nice resorts, and it's a fun place to hang out. I like the ex-pat population there. Older, and more affluent. Cha-am on the other hand is just awful, there's just nothing there. It reminds me of Coney Island or Kuta in Bali. Yikes. -

I agree. And this was just an attempt at satire. -
Escort scam: Thai man assaulted & robbed in Chiang Mai hotel trap
spidermike007 replied to webfact's topic in Chiang Mai News
Yeah that's a very likely possibility, it is just another reason to never go back to their room, and always go back to your own room instead, or a neutral room. And always make sure everything's locked up, that's the first thing you do when you enter the room. -

The Big Pharma mafia, in cahoots with the CDC, a major lobby, and the FDA. Nothing else needs to be said. -

Police Investigate 6 Deaths in Bangkok Hotel, Inspect 8 Suitcases
spidermike007 replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
I just read that this appears to be a poisoning by one of the members of the group, due to massive debt. Does this make sense? Why take others with you for the ride? That seems exceptionally cruel. -

I will be very curious to see what the police forensics reveal, and how they might spin the story. This is probably about the most frank and honest thing that Srettha has ever said in public, since he was appointed as PM. I just read that this appears to be a poisoning by one of the members of the group, due to massive debt. Does this make sense? Why take others with you for the ride? That seems exceptionally cruel. -
Irish terrorist engaged to Thai bride 50 years his junior
spidermike007 replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Technically, Britain engaged in terrorism worldwide for 300 years or so, using the East India Trading Company. India alone was terrorized by the UK, endlessly. Were it not for the thievery and bad behavior, it is likely the UK might have collapsed 100 years ago. Colonialism was certainly a far more traumatising experience for colonial subjects than their colonisers. They suffered poverty, malnutrition, disease, cultural upheaval, economic exploitation, political disadvantage, and systematic programmes aimed at creating a sense of social and racial inferiority. While some may argue that any suffering on the part of the British colonialists ought to be met with little sympathy, this is not a reason to obscure it from history. https://theconversation.com/colonialism-in-india-was-traumatic-including-for-some-of-the-british-officials-who-ruled-the-raj-77068 -
Escort scam: Thai man assaulted & robbed in Chiang Mai hotel trap

Huh? He came out of the bathroom with four men? That is quite a hat trick. Very unusual. Very bizarre. So, the perps climbed into the bathroom window and waited? Not buying it. -
Six Vietnamese Found Dead in Bangkok Hotel Room

That would be completely irrelevant. If they had a large suite at the Hyatt, they have done well, and spent decades working hard. The entire sorry smells fishy. -
Thai Govt Disputes Claims of Deserted Tourist Spots
spidermike007 replied to webfact's topic in Hua Hin and Cha-Am News
I have never understood the appeal of Cha-Am, other than the fact that it's relatively close to the Bangkok metro area. It is not a particular nice beach, it's jam-packed on the weekends, the vendors are out of control, the area can get very congested, and there are a few nice hotels, but there's a lot of junky places too. I just don't get it, never have, never will. It reminds one of a 3rd world version of Bondi Beach. Or Kuta in Bali. Both are horrific.
