Me and she are 'self islolating' after doing one of the last possible border hops. 7 days now and all ok.

Total shut down for 2 or 3 weeks must be done. It's not going to stop the virus in its track, nothing except a vaccine can. It's just the way this virus is.

No objection from me if it means curfews or soldiers/police on the streets.

I don't want to get sick or die from this because some think no-one has the right to stop them having parties or going to the bars.

Shut everything except food shops and pharmacies.

Medical services need as many breaks as they can get.

You are getting your wish. Looks like the army is imposing a 7pm curfew as of tomorrow, and is on the verge of imposing martial law.

I sort of go with the virus being killed off if it lands on a surface that gets full tropical sunlight and high UV levels  ( hence vindaloo was tongue in cheek ) no scientific knowledge/proof on my part to justify my thoughts though it feels like it makes sense. There will be the arguement 'what about the middle east?' Dare I mention general lack of hand washing, years of war and water priority is for drinking, and all eating from the same central dish using hands and a not too well advanced health care system unless you're stinking rich. Anyway you get my jist.

So in general I agree with the idea of heat and throw in a good dose of UV.

India? I'll still go with 'hold that result'. Lots of people in close contact.

    Edit.

Anyone got a digital thermometer to check the temperature of their car parked in the sun here for an hour. Outside and inside the car?

Also, the middle east is not hot this time of year. Averaging around 16-24 in most areas. Not hot enough.

Now we are getting a flip flop from the army. There was a general "go home, get out of the big cities" attitude last week. Then photos surfaced of the Mo Chit Bus terminal being jammed, and they were embarrassed. This week they are saying please stay in cities and do not go home. However the cities are locked down and you don't have a job. What can one say?

It's the airlines. They have never been good business. Too many risks.  Amazon basically functions as the de facto medical, food, and essential goods distributor. Google and Apple... will have more money than the government soon if this keeps up.

Here is what one of the greatest CEO of all time said about the company he ran American Airlines.

“I’ve never invested in any airline. I’m an airline manager. I don’t invest in airlines. And I always said to the employees of American, ‘This is not an appropriate investment. It’s a great place to work and it’s a great company that does important work. But airlines are not an investment.’”

    -Robert Crandall

Agreed on Amazon's packaging however these days it is made out of very young trees. We have more wood pulp than you can shake a box at these days and it's sustainable.

For this maybe the government should get involved airlines will always have problems weather, war, disease, economics, fuel prices...

The airlines have to be bailed out that isn't even in question.

And the airlines should have access to loans. Not grants. And let us not forget the reason why travel within the US is so expensive is consolidation. That was a huge mistake to allow it to happen. Really tragic for the American people.

  4. Joe/Amy. Frankly, at this stage, I think Justin Bieber could beat Trump. But that VP ticket might win by 10 million votes. Trump fatigue has set in, he really blew the response to Corona, (it was a democratic hoax!!!) and the economy is tanking. His chances of re-election are evaporating by the day. And Joe is being really smart, by sitting back and letting all of this play out.

You are old school and quickly becoming the minority. Paperless billing is the way to go. The USPS would never be able to provide the service to the people right now as Amazon does. Order your essentials in the next 30 minutes get FREE delivery by 2 pm tomorrow.

It's apple's and oranges. Amazon also doesn't need a bail out.

I like Amazon too. Their service is amazing. I do object to their packaging, which is way over the top. But, they are good. However, they are not a substitute for the guy I need to send a check to for my garage rental, nor the book I need to ship, at book rate, which is really cheap, nor the occasional package I need to ship overseas. The post office still serves a very useful function for millions every day.

And let us hope none of the bailout money goes to Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Facebook, or any of the other giants that are making more money that most can count.

  6. These are still incredibly low numbers. Not cause for panic. Not yet. Let us see how this plays out. Hopefully the experts that claim the heat dulls the spread of this virus are right. I do believe they are. And the timing is perfect, as the entire nation is heating up right now. There is not a single tropical country in the world that has over 2,000 cases at this moment. Even Brazil, which is enormous, has less than 2,000. And it has 212 million people. So, let us be calm, even minded, and see how this plays out.

I for one, feel this is one of the safest nations on earth, at this time. Granted, I am not in Bangkok, so it is easier to say all this.

  7. There is no scientific evidence to support Manoon's theory. It does sound alarmist to me, and let us hope he is wrong. Precautions are a good thing. We all need to practice them, and do out part. But fear mongering is not beneficial. Paranoia is not what we need, at this time. I said it before, and I will say it again. I think many of the virologists and researchers who claim that the virus cannot thrive in this heat, are correct. Sure, there is still going to be some direct transmission. But, it appears that the contagious droplets cannot survive on a surface for more than an hour or two, in heat of 30c of higher. So, we appear to have that in our favor. At least the heat here is good for something!

So far, we are looking at a minuscule number of cases here. Well under 1,000. Malaysia has nearly double that, but they allowed Mosque services to continue, until they realized it was too little, too late, in the way of prevention. That was absolutely inane. No other tropical country in the world has the kind of numbers we see in the US (up to 43,734 as of now), Europe, and NE Asia. Even Brazil, as huge and populated as it is, only has 1,924 cases. So, let's all calm down, take a deep breath, and be thankful we are here in Thailand. I consider it to be one of the safest places on earth, right now. Let us hope we do not see a great spread of the virus here.

  9. Sometimes it seems as if the universe supports evil men. It is nice to see something like this happen, to a man who has inflicted untold pain on so many. Being a reasonable healthy man, from a psychological point of view, I can never understand when a man with his power and wealth abuses his position. He could have gotten an untold amount of action, from women who were perfectly willing to offer their affections, in return for career advancement, yet he felt compelled to force himself on so many who had no interest. He will be getting very little sympathy from very few people. Good riddens.

  10. What’s more, in a service-sector dominated economy much of the lost output is never going to be recovered. If people do not go out to their weekly meal at their favourite local restaurant for the next two months they are not going to eat out four times a week when the fear of infection has been lifted. It also seems likely that the economic pain will go on for longer than originally estimated. There is also a question of how long it will take consumer and business confidence to recover. Policy action by central banks and finance ministries can help in this respect but only so much. The chances are that the imminent recession will be U-shaped: a steep decline followed by a period of bumping along the bottom. There will be recovery but it will take time and only after much damage has been caused.

In other news the air in Chiang Mai is well over 400

They closed the schools in BKK when it was 170

As nice a town as Chiang Mai is, it has become a death zone. The entire northern region. The human lungs are simply not designed to handle numbers like this day after day. The pollution is getting worse here each year, not better, as we are dealing with a degree of incompetence and indifference from this administration, that is at a level that is incomprehensible. Levels of over 200 can dramatically shorten ones life. If I were living there, I would be planning a move.
