  1. Riding the motorbike along the main road as someone set of a 'chain of firecrackers'. Hit by shrapnel all over. Not particularly safe for newbies on a bike.
  2. I went to Phu Quoc a year or three before Covid. Very quiet and underdeveloped. Not helped by the fact that I was attacked by a swarm of Vietnamese Killer Bees. Best thing ever - a motorbike tour off the beaten track. I live on Koh Samui. Phu Quoc was disappointing.
  3. Some good recommendations here. Vietnam is my favourite 'short' break in the region. Especially Hanoi I love the place, people and the culture. The food is OK but I usually take some spicy sauce or green chillis with me. I stay in AirBnb's and rent a scooter. That looks dangerous (especially in Hanoi) but it is a lot safer than the roads here on Samui. In Hanoi I tend to stay in the NE quadrant. One thing that I definitely recommend in Hanoi is the water puppet show. A part of old Vietnamese culture that is dying out. Very touristy now but for me, amazing stuff. I go every time that I am there. HCMC does nothing for me but worth a visit to see the Cu Chi tunnels etc
  4. That will be expensive to rebuild. I looked at having a teak house when I first came to Thailand and 25 years ago, it was 3 - 4 times the price of a regular build.
  5. Another hand out announcement just in time for the POA elections.
  6. And China has known about these gangs and who the leaders are for years.
  7. They missed the bit where UNRWA is also a handy recruiting ground for Hamas and enables Hamas operatives to move about freely.
  8. Yak, yak, yak, blah, blah, blah. Why not try doing something for a change.
  9. Come on local residents, more tip-offs please.
  10. Never in a million years did I think that I would agree to anything that Prawit said. However, I now stand corrected. (I do realise that this is a ploy for him to try and get some of the backhanders, nonetheless.....)
  11. And the burnings continue. No one seems to care. Just carry on as before.
  12. And Thailand's wonderful Finance Minister and PM both said that the 'unacceptably high' interest rates would kill exports. Hmm - who to believe.
  13. Fix the bluddy problem Thailand. It has been happening for years. A week's supply of masks is as much use as a plaster on an amputation.
  14. I live on Koh Samui (25 years now) and there is very little obvious crime. I live on a private development where there is very basic security and I have never locked my doors or windows. When my wife was alive, she felt very safe wherever we lived in Thailand. (She had been mugged twice in her home town in the UK - Birmingham.)
  15. Yes, two licences are a must. I have no idea if the translation fees etc are good or not, but they do not seem too unreasonable. First ones last two years and then renew every five years after that.
  16. Not really. The body was not identified until some time in 2019. The police would start looking after that.
  17. It amazes me the dumb arguments being presented here to justify comments and blame victims. speeding - a distraction no helmet - a distraction on phone - a distraction no licence - a distraction From the short video clip, there is no evidence of any of these distractions being fact or not. We will never know. The only fact is that there is a big black car, at night, in a place where it should not be. Very sad for their families.
  18. That was not my experience back in November. They did not confirm the MDAC within the three days that we were told to do it, and no one asked me for it when I entered Malaysia (and I still did not have one).
  19. Not really that startling. Happens all of the time. I hope that they do not realise who took the video.
  20. Plastic bags, plastic containers, plastic packaging etc. Yes, here there are folk going through the bins collecting plastic bottles, cans, cardboard etc, but there is still a lot of plastic that cannot be recycled. The worst one is the styrofoam. These unsellables are what they burn and the smoke is toxic.
  21. The name's Zhijiang, She Zhijiang. Martini anyone?
  22. Very sad story. I hope that the parents can overcome their grief.
  23. Decriminalised, not legalised. There is a difference.
  24. I have lived on the island for 25 years now and this is the first time that I have heard of something like this, so I am surprised. I wonder why relatively few students were affected.
