  1. Could this be true? Can I take him off my ignore list coz he's GORN?
  2. FYI got an update two days ago and it is still checking daily so all seems fine - getting my Defender updates!
  3. Actually I was using "visibility" as a measure - when I landed this time last year I could barely see to the edge of the runway, let alone Doi Suthep itself - most days the mountains are clear so visibility ten times greater.
  4. It is TEN times better than it was last year.
  5. Checked my wifes passport (I've got the new "blue" [actually more black] one) - issued march 2015, expires June 2025. So - need to get a new one before March next year but otherswise she's safe to return to Europe.
  6. "Our readers are brand-savvy and enjoy indulging in the finer things in life, from exhilarating extreme sports and luxurious yachting to relaxing spa retreats and exclusive polo events." How true - I was just saying that to Fred as we were playing shove ha'penny down the local bar and knocking shop
  7. Thanks for all the helpful replies. I've got a liveable solution and will work on a long-term one.
  8. Got an update a few weeks ago - that'll do me until I come up with a permanent solution up to and including a new Windows 11 latop but the machine works fine and I hate uopgrading just for licence reasons.
  9. I use it until it clears up then stop. Or at least I did until I found the Thailand miracle cure 🙂 decent weather
  10. Nope - wrong reading sorry. I dsiable Microsoft Software protection which apparently checks to see if the MS software is legal - I left Defender untouched. And it worked - it was taking 40-60% CPU every few minutes - now my machine is running great (albeit with an annoying msg on the bottom right)
  11. And it seems I can't even get a "legit" key from Msoft as they stopped issuing them January last year! (Windows 10 that is)
  12. The best ointment I found was Dermovate - available at chemists here.
  13. There was no link The "P" is silent. 🙂 Yes I get it intermittently (as well eczema) but mercifully both have cleared up since I arrived here long-stay (5 months) which always seems to happen when I get here - symptoms seem to clear up weeks if not in days. Must be the warm climate (I lived in central Europe before).
  14. I just use a 50-cm bamboo cane slotted in the back carrier which I can deploy in seconds and growl and threaten at dogs snarling at me. Works every time.
  15. OK, my laptop was "upgraded" in a shop in Computer Plaza Chiang Mai many years ago to Windows 10 Home (harware is too old for 11). All was fine then I saw this software protection process in task manager banging away. I eventually got in disabled in "services" and CPU is fine - but getting this msg in the bottom right corner. My "trial" copy of Excel (and I assume other Office products) is disabled which is no biggie - I hardly use it, besides I have a legit copy on another machine (not here) so I can fix that when I go back and get the licence key (multi-device) BUT question is will Windows eventually stop working altoghter? I am loathe to do a full upgrade with a "legit" copy but Googling I see licence keys for sale for a few hundred baht it seems - how dodgy are these?

  17. Anek Bike Shop (135 6, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50100) have been very helpful with repairing/upgrading a couple of bikes of mine - they seem to have a fair stock to sell as well
  18. So - Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand generally not getting any weather today then
  19. This is NOT definitive but every time in the last couple of years it SEEMED to be closed after 9pm when I went through. Maybe there's a bell
  20. For my wife we did the form by post but she only had two employers (one of them me) so not much of a chore. For myself I called them up and spent about 30-45 minutes on the phone filling the form out - but we got there in the end - all sorted. Main thing is to have your NI number to hand. The call can be expensive so I would recommend Skype. Especially as you listen to crappy music for 20 minutes waiting for somebody to pick up at their end
  21. Coincidentally I had a tooth pulled YESTERDAY at the Chiang Mai Ram dental clinic - 1600 baht. Asked why I did't want to "repair" the tooth with root canal work and a crown - yeah, for 30,000 baht, then ten years later the crown falls apart. Better five minutes of discomfort as the dentist did a great job of extracting it. He tried to talk me into an implant but a simple denture will do me.
  22. Google is a wonderful thing but then you've got me to do it for you 🙂 : https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dna-testing-for-british-passport-applications/dna-testing-for-british-passport-applications-accessible (t appears to be voluntary. As my children are the spitting image of me my wife asked for one to prove she was the mother 🙂
  23. The gloves are off now. "Forest fires in Thailand increase dangerous PM2.5 levels" Who'd a -thunk it? Some amazing revelations in this artcile. Good to see the authroities are on top of this
