  1. Hi,

I just got an offer for making a porch. its very big, 3 "lok" long (each lok is 3,2m) and 4m wide. In addition, there is an extension that has no walls, same length as the main porch and 3m wide (using the same roof).

The stairs follow the length of the porch, and is made of concrete (same as the foundation). The windows will be aluminum and cover almost all the vertical areas (3 areas: front, left and right). The builder says the cost of only the aluminum windows and doors is 70k baht. The asking price for everything is 280k baht, payed in steps as the porch is finished.

The roof will be an extension of the main roof of the house, same materials, color etc.

    Here are some more details:

Roof: CPAC monier blue color. Concrete: prefabricated, 5mm steel bars. Concrete pillars: 8+4 (4 is for the outside roof).

Tiles, 20cm size. Roof inside: gypsum. Outside wall: Shera wood imitation.

Stairs inside: round shape, size 30cm wide and max 15cm deep.

Stairs outside: long, follow the building (3 lok) 30cm wide and max 15cm deep. Tiles.

Painting of all surfaces is included. Lights: 8 small build inside roof, 3 Switches. Electrical outlets: 3, at same place as the switches.

Windows and doors: aluminum, white. Mosquito cover: all windows and doors that can open have mosquito covers. These can be slided. Color is white.

Is the asking price too much? if so, what arguments can we use to get the price down? All help is greatly appreciated!

  2. you need to look at more than price, resolution and size. connections are very important, as well as what formats the usb can understand (if there is a usb). also, if you are close to the tv, 42" is just too big sometimes. getting a full hd without usb or lan would be pretty bad IMO, because you now get full hd models with these connections and it increases the accessibility of hd content drastically.

about plasma and lcd: i am a huge plasma fan. but the new lcd and led are very good and a huge improvement on the technology. Personally i would avoid led, its too much money for little difference.

    good luck!

  3. its a good choice to go to truevision. the reason is that dreamboxes etc is for people with a lot of pc knowledge. If you dont, these systems will screw you (with or without the help of a company).

I have decent pc knowledge, but still needed help from old friends and new dreambox friends. its a great hobby but not for all.

  5. I have a question.

Is there a benefit at all if any, to adding an AV amp with digital input to your system when you already have a good analogue pre and power amp designed for pure audio if you're not keen on building a home theater with multi channel surround system? I've recently got rid of my DVD player for BR but the sound output level for some reason has been lowered (need to turn the volume knob more than when I used DVD player) and while the picture quality has certainly improved the sound hasn't seen as dramatic an improvement as the picture. AV components being generally so cheap compared to pure audio so the cost is not really a big concern for me but the space is as there is no more space left in my rack for another component and while I can add another shelf to the rack I'd rather avoid it unless absolutely necessary as it raises the TV placed on top shelf and subsequently the view point. My pre amplifier does not have digital input so the sound from BR player comes from its analogue output via RCA cable instead of HDMI.

in theory there will be a benefit. But i am not sure how useful it is.

I am trying to think why the output of the BR is lower than the dvd. i cant say i know a good reason, except that the output level of the BR is too low. Maybe you can try another BR player and compare.

On a sidenote: you might want to consider adding 5.1 sound. You should be able to have your normal output for the 2 normal channels, and then add a separate amp(s) to get the central and surround sound. I say this because this would be the solution i would choose with your system. you have an excellent stereo system, so you just want to add the others to get 5.1. btw, just skip the sub. AFAIK, the signal is the same to the stereo outs, so you are not missing anything. The difference in final output is the physical characteristics of the speaker, and you have all that is needed already in this regard. So, this would only mean the addition of one amplifier and 2(or 3) speakers.
