  1.  speakers will probably be easier to find second hand, do you think i will be able to find any of those Yamaha receivers second hand?

yes, i will think more about the budget. but the fact is i am kinda flexible. but if i get an av-receiver for around 30-50k, i will probably need to only buy 2 front speakers and wait with the rest. dont like to travel with too much valuable stuff.

i will look into the differences between the rx-v765 and the 1900 and the 3900. they also have a rx-v1065 model.

  2. you need to find out if your plasma is 720p,1080i or 1080p. i am guessing that your plasma is a 720p, and that you cant watch hd. this is just a guess though, based on the price you payed for the plasma.

  3. thats all good, but we need a kitchen before that :). getting an offer from a local kitchen builder now. he is building with teak, so thats the obvious problem. not sure where he gets his wood, and i dont know how i can verify the expected info about it being from a legal plantation.

  4. thanks! it doesnt say if the marantz does upscaling to 1080p.i guess that means it doesnt. the samsung 6 series tv is 1080i, so i would need upscaling probably.

i have also been looking at the yamaha rxv765. any advice on that one is appreciated.

yes, i have seen and read about the mordaunt short speakers. If someone could explain why they are so cheap to "comparable" speakers, i would be very happy!

I def need to go and listen, problem is i live far away from bkk. hopefully i will get an opportunity in the not so far future.

  5. hi,

I am buying a new system for our porch. the porch will be the center of our daily life from now on, so i need a good system here. i will also add a tv, but dont need advice on that (probably buy another samsung 6 series).

In the homeland i always had NAD, onkyo, denon, b&w etc. by no means hi end, but decent sounding systems. My question is, what brands are good value for money here? I think not imported european brands, but maybe korean or japanese? looking for general experiences about this.

    Specific elements:

-looking for a dvd player that plays cd's well too (might go with blueray, but its not a must).

-For amp, i am thinking 5.1. unless this hurts the sound of 2 channel sound a lot. i have had a few 5.1 systems but not any good ones, so i am not experienced in this aspect. The porch is huge, so it needs some power (especially when we open and turn the speakers into the garden). What specs are essential? Media will be high quality, cds and wave format files mostly.

-Speakers: first goal is to get 2 good front speakers (maybe with a sub) and then add surround later. not looking for a design speaker like bose. i have space, so they can be big.

price range: not looking for the hi end, over 150k would be a bit much for it all. but i am quite flexible if i find good value for money.

also, experience with buying second hand in thailand:

one seller wanted to use a shipping company called thaiparcels (thaiparcels.com). he said they will check what is being sent and send a confirmation to the receiver. at that point the buyer must send all the money before the package is sent. anyone used this kind of shipping?

  6. 6 months ago i changed to 3 phase. didnt have to change any appliances, ac or anything else.

of course not because a three-phase connection consists of three single phases and you are using them "singly". the other way round does not work in case you have some three-phase appliances.

wish i could change u to 3phase, any change would be an improvement.

  7.   I think many here have good points. First of all its not hi end audio when you talk about a modified speaker like this. the real question is if the speaker would be a lot better after the mod, which i think its likely to be. thats unless the elements are not of high quality. so thats the first thing we would need to know. i dont have any experience building speakers, so i dont know what kind of elements are available to buy separately. But i do have a lot of experience composing and making music in the most expensive of studios. "hi enders" often talk about the importance of cables etc. Please remember that most of the music that one listens to is made with cheap cables. Thats just one example of the sometimes exaggerated lust for "hi end" things.

However, dont interpret this as if i dont appreciate hi end sound. I love it. but i also love people that experiment with building speakers etc. and its no doubt that sometimes hi enders use too much money in places that doesnt make any or little difference.

EDIT: just read nordlys' post. what i am writing about cables doesnt really apply to what he says. at that level of hi end, cables surely matter. but most ppl at that level also mostly listen to a very selected number of sources (meaning cds or vinyl that is made in specific very hi end studios).

  8. Sounds like good thinking to me. I had a problem with the water purity in the kitchen a while back, and we narrowed it down to the faucet. one way of solving the problem is to remove the aerator, another would be to clean the thing. we did the latter, which involved disassembling it. if someone knows a good way to clean a faucet without removing it, it would be nice to know about it.

  9. as you are an engineer you can probably do it yourself with some thai workers.

a farang led pool company could have a nice future, as there are quite a few farangs that want a pool, but find it hard to find a suitable company.

But if you are not knowledgeable in this area, i dont think its very smart to make a pool on your own. a lot of horror stories, even in this subforum.
