  1. Pumping water into a river already carrying much more water than usual doesn't seem like a good idea. Wouldn't it be better to pump the water to an area which has a holding pond and release the water gradually in the dry season....or better still use the water for irrigation?

I think that is a little bit to easy to do and requires a lot of thinking not something that is used a lot in Thailand.

  2. The local village school at the start of the day are normally short of teachers, they like to turn up at a time that suits them,so what happens is the 'older 'pupils take charge of the younger ones,is it a wonder that the children's education is poor. But by the way at the end of the day these same teacher s are not late going home.

  3. anyone else find this story quite funny - can you just see the guys face as they burst in the door

    That's not my wallet it's his -

Or - diving out the window as he tries to empty his wallet leaving a trail of 1k notes

    Or - it's my birthday

Hilarious but unfortunately the Anti Graft Buster Squad would need to have more manpower than the Police Army Navy and Airforce put together to have any real impact on Graft in Thailand - stiff penalties for those caught and convicted would be a start and the addition of a fast track special court system that only deals with Graft cases

On the spot fines work good as well.
  4. There are too many rice farmers in this country producing way too mush rice and putting undue

strain on the water resources of their area where they work the land, switch to other crops

or farming methods is the best advise one can give them...

I wonder if you can tell the people the best crops to grow that requires little or no water that the Thai farmers can grow and also make a profit?.

  5. Good thing I never got stopped and searched on my many CBR trips around the north and north east of Thailand, or they might have found the Kershaw combat boot knife, and the push button lock blade, both with 4" blades, both razor sharp, that I carried on me at all times.

why would you want to Carry such thing, unless you have intentions of using it,

I traveled all over the north and north east of Thailand on my CBR, always traveling alone. Sometimes I would get off the main roads and go to some of the smaller cities and villages. That is not always the safest thing to do for a foreigner at times. I'm a 4th Dan in Shotokan, and a 20 year Marine, so I definitely know how to take care of myself, but to my thinking, it never hurts to have a little "back up" should it be needed. I never had any intentions of using either knife, or even putting myself in a situation where it might be necessary, but this is Thailand, and sometimes things happen that make no sense, so it's best to be prepared, just in case. Always walk away if at all possible. If not, take down as many as I could, while I could.

  6. "By giving money to the organisation to buy rubber, we wonder if this is because rubber kept in store earlier is no longer in the stock,'' he said."

Waa, waa, waa, the nasty men won't give us lots more money for doing nothing. They must be helping someone else then. Those they are helping must have done something wrong. I have no evidence for this, but I'm not getting what I want. It's not fair…..

    Pathetic

. Yes I do think that your reply is pathetic.

  7. Logic is not held in high regard around these parts. .. and they like to increase their profit by any means. Or so it seems.

Did you not try to make as much money as you could when you were working?

There was a news item here recently that song taew basic rates would be reduced to 10 baht, by order of the Junta. Did I read that correctly, or was I hallucinating again? I don't see how these guys stay on the road at the 20 baht rate. And it seems ludicrous to even use the word "profit" when discussing this hand to mouth business. I have started relying on them more lately, finding them generally preferable to the ancient, noisy, hard riding tuk tuk fleet. Cheaper, too. The new big red tuks are a much needed improvement, but a song taew is better, especially if you have it all to yourself. You just need to be clear beforehand what it will cost. Naturally it's much better and cheaper when I have my Thai wife along.

Come on, it's totally reasonable to pay 50 - 60 baht for a solo ride clear across town, in relative comfort, and being able to see out of the vehicle. This topic always incites controversy. Now somebody will sign in and say guys like me and mr. thrilled (see above) are the reason for rampant corruption by the song taew and tuk tuk "mafias". Could be, I guess. Sorry.

Don't be sorry you speak the truth. It is a 20 baht fare and that is what I pay on a short trip if they ask for more and it is reasonable no problem. If the trip is a little long and they don't ask for more I make it a point to give them 30 baht. The rate has been 20 baht for 4 years with the cost of living going up drastically I believe it is only fair to pay them more. When I was working I got as much as I could out of the company. When I was in a union they did it for me. Never was it a 4 year wait.wai.gif
