  1. No suggestions ?

Went to a few places this week for breakfast. Some have big signs open at 7 a.m. but are all locked up. Many plaes they talk about on TV open at 9 or 10 And by then I's starting to think about lunch already

Smoothie blues on Nimmenhymen and The Pub on Huay Kaew do good breakfasts.

  2. I'm surprised people are still arguing about this. Nobody has answered one of my questions. I mentioned that there are NO McDonald's in Vietnam, Cambodia, or Myanmar (Burma). And my question was, do you want there to be McDonald's in those countries?

I couldn't care less. It's up to the locals in those countries. As the Thai's have proven they want it here by the stores popularity.

    Pretty much agree.

In the states, when you go to a nice town or resort type area, they might have a mcd's, but it's 'done tastefully' (like a playboy spread, lol). No big signs, it might be cedar paneled, etc.. So, while I appreciate the presence of a mcdonalds so I can get the occasional sausage mcmuffin with Egg, I'd rather not see the big gawdy golden arches..

Again. no i did not say that at all.

  4. I just said I'd prefer not to see TOO MANY McDonalds, because it's boring as all hell to come all the way to Thailand to see McDonalds.

Most people wouldn't want to see McDonald's when visiting 'exotic' places for a short time (I think).

However, as so often thrust down our throats on here; " we are guests in their country".

That being the case accept what our hosts want and that is lots of McDonald's. wink.png

Why are you quoting me? I never said that. lol

  5. Avoid Italy. They discriminate against non EU visitors

Colosseum + Roman Forum + Palatine Hill Combined Ticket (valid for 2 days):

    Adults: € 12,00

Concessions: € 7,50 (European citizens between 18 and 24 years of age, teachers, etc.)

Free Admission: European citizens under 18 and over 65 years of age

Bargain for a 2 day pass.

  6. Thai's heading to Melbourne or Sydney would be appalled at how many Thai restaurants there are. Literally thousands. I don't think so, they couldn't give a toss. And neither do I. If McDonalds is not for you just don't eat it. The Thai's are lovin it. smile.png

If Walmart and McDonalds are your idea of Thailand, than more power to you. Did you even read my post? I just said I'd prefer not to see TOO MANY McDonalds, because it's boring as all hell to come all the way to Thailand to see McDonalds. So, if you love McDonalds, go pork out to your heart's content. Actually, just pork out at home and save the airfare. Why the hell come to Thailand to engorge yourself on Western fast food when you can fatten up at home on that shit?

Now, your comparison to Thai restaurants in the West is off. Thais are not going to the West and getting confronted with a huge, multinational, Thai chain fast food store they've been eating at their whole lives. They are finding all sorts of independent restaurants. And, yes, my students would find it incredibly, mind-numbingly, disappointing to go all the way to the West to eat Pad Thai. If they want to self-lobotomize, they can ride around without a helmet.

This is a no-brainer. For people who are actually interested in seeing different cultures and exploring the world, McDonalds is #@$^ boring. Once there are McDonalds everywhere, than one might as well stop travelling. But, again, for people who are just here because it's cheap, but would actually prefer to live in the West (er, if they could have similar access to girls), culture doesn't mean shit, and they could make the whole thing into a corporate disneyland, kick the Thais out, and that would be considered an improvement.

Where does my post say Walmart and Maccas are my idea of Thailand?

After all is said and done, more is said than done, TV in a nut shell.

The Eagles song "get over it" come to mind.

  7. Kinda' funny that some people are disappointed to see more McDonalds in CM. Perhaps some people come here to get away from stuff like McDonalds.

The reason that there are so many McDonald's is not for foreigners. It is because many Thais like to eat there. Thailand is not a theme park. People that can not put up with fast food restaurants on crowded city streets might try travel to the Antarctic. I don't think that they have any there.

Never said the fast food restaurants were for foreigners. Same with the 7/11s. I did say that foreigners might be a little disappointed to travel half way around the world (in some cases) to see an exotic land and culture, and then see McDonalds, Burger King, Subway… everywhere. Contrary to your statement that they can go to Antarctica, they can simply go to Laos, Cambodia, or Myanmar if they don't want to see too much of the biggest cliches of their own countries already established here. I mean, it's not difficult to understand why someone wouldn't want to go all the way to Thailand to see McDonalds. Interestingly, I never saw a McDonalds in Vietnam.

Honestly, suppose you decided to go see the pyramids. You wouldn't really want to go inside and find a Starbucks AND a McDonalds, would you? Why bother going someplace different if when you get there it's the same tired old shit that was boring you to death back home.

Kinda' like going to Vang Vieng and watching Friends on TV all day. Why the #%@$ bother? Oh, well, yeah, of course, some are here 'cause it's cheap and they can get cheap sex. That's true. But other people are more interested in seeing the world.

I too don't want to see too many McDonalds, mostly because it's boring. Otherwise I might as well just stay at home if I am just going to see American fast food chains and white people. That said, I do occasionally eat at said restaurants.

  8. Pun Pun in Wat Suan Dok does delicious breakfasts, and lunches.

not the same one as you probably know.

Gonzo is one of Chiang Mai's nice guys. A few more like him and the world would be a better place. Never concerned with his own privations, Gonzo provides great food and great conversation for his friends and customers

. DaamNaam: you should be made to travel from Wat Suan Dok on your hands and knees and see how long it takes you!!

Only ever heard of the veggie one at the temple, forgive my ignorance.

No need for the flaming though.wink.png

you need a big injection of humour, so dam naam serious every time. He is humouring you mate, not taking the pi$$

    Side splittingly hilarious.

  11. I'm about to rent a small place and looking for the same info.

I have been told by a long-term resident that there is one store which sells new electrical goods which have been recently superseded at way below the price of newer models.

I'm about to find which place this is, and if you send me a message, I'll pass that info on.

Is it my imagination, or are TV sets here much more expensive than in Australia?

No, they're the same price here. And rent somewhere furnished, easier.

  12. I work in the Secondary school section at LIST (Lanna International School Thailand), on the south side of the city. I guess with my child at the school (in early Primary) and me working there it sounds like I am advertising the place - I suppose I am in a way, but only because I am so happy with my child's experience there and appreciate what my child is getting... (please don't form a queue I like the small class sizes - this is for information only!)

First of all, where I work and teach is ENTIRELY related to the quality of the educational experience there, since my child goes for free (normal for international school teachers). If I am not happy I have no choice but to vote with my feet...

    I am going nowhere!

The teachers in lower Primary are OUTSTANDING, and I feel truly privileged to have my child go through the experiences he has had there.

My advice, for what it is worth is:

    • If you plan to educate your kids internationally don't wait until mid-primary, sending them to a nice but not that great nursery first - they will be so far behind the full internationally educated kids it will take years to make up - if ever ( I see this ALL of the time).
    • Try to compare the international/cheap bilingual options properly - they are not even similar. If I had to pay I would very likely take the cheaper option ( I am not rich) - but don't fool yourself that they are similar. THEY ARE NOT - the highly qualified/experienced teachers matter...
    • Because kids are happy where they are does NOT mean they are getting a good start in life. Most kids are happy playing with your Ipad...
    • Oh, and kids in the very early years at LIST get NO homework - setting it is clearly ridiculous and only set to placate overly ambitious (and misguided) parents. If you really think they should have it go and read the plethora of research on the subject of how homework can be used to be effective... (it doesn't start in Kindergarden!)

How do the non natives go with Thai and Thai studies at LIST?

Our kids were pulled out of there as they were getting nowhere with Thai, and us parents got they rap for it. I guess its fine if you plan on leaving Thailand for further studies or simply go home. Home for us is Thailand so i think a bi-lingual education is far better in that sense. Each to their own of course.

  13. All the transitions lenses I've purchased here in Thailand have started to fade. The ones i purchased in Singapore 5 years ago still unblemished. Now what does that tell you?

I've tried Tokyo, and all the other so called experts here to no avail with quality.

    Sad but true.

  14. What price is expensive and what price is cheap you all mention both but dont mention any guide prices

    dk

For an average sized kitchen, say 2 metres long, the cheap version could start as low as 60,000 baht, for the hard wood or imported gloss cabinets with marble or granite tops (i.e. top end) you are talking 200,000 to 400,000. About what you would pay in Australia or the UK. Imported parts are more expensive for sure but the labour costs being lower keep the prices about the same.

I have 2 friends here that have used Homikitch and they are over the moon with the result, no problems whatsoever. That's what I'm looking for. Hard to find that here, so when you see it, it's refreshing.
