A lot of changes over the years. When I first arrived here the baht was pegged to the USD at 23/1. It moved like a glacier to 25/1 where it remained for a very long time. In 1997 we had the Asian financial crisis. The dollar became very strong as the baht was floated. It somewhat settled in the 40-42/1 range. Began slipping a bit in the early 2000's and has now dropped to the lower 30's/1. If you were paid in dollars or pounds you were doing very well during this time. To me, the 90's and early 2000's were the best time to be an expat in Thailand. The jobs were good, pay was good, inflation in Thailand wasn't nearly as bad. Thai people seemed a lot happier then. The opening of the second stage expressway in 1993 was great! The BTS and later MRT were completed in the late 90's and early 2000's which made getting around a lot easier.

In addition, we have cable TV too! A lot more channels that are of interest to expats.

I always take a quick shower/rinse before getting into the pool. It helps to get rid of suntan cream and any oils that may be on my body like sweat, etc.

Might want to explore some other countries too. Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Costa Rica, Colombia etc.

I like Speed Stick. For years couldn't get it in Thailand. I would just bring 4-5 over when I was abroad. Now there are many other ways to purchase it.

This is an incredible distance that a fired round can travel. Granted, accuracy is severely compromised but it is still a lethal round if it comes in contact with someone. The 45ACP is a big fat round but will still travel 1800yds (1645 metres) which is very far. The 30-06 can travel just over 5 kilometres. It is a popular hunting round. The .223 Remington (5.56mm) is the most common round carried by US forces in their M4 rifles. It's also the caliber found in the civilian counterpart in the US called the AR-15. This round can travel just over 3.5 kilometres. Anyway, guns can be very dangerous when used in a reckless manner. This Brit should have been locked up and then deported!

How many times have we heard this over the last 30 years? Ok, maybe Bangkok won't be as bad as usual but the other nearby provinces will end up being flooded.

I had the Pfizer injections in mid-April and then again on 3 May. I had no side affects at all except for a sore arm at injection site that lasted for about 24-30 hours. Nothing since then. Despite being 62 years of age, I went out the next day and rode my road bike 65 kilometres at my normal pace.

My condolences to you at this difficult time. I too have had a Thai wife pass away from cancer a number of years ago. Not an easy thing to deal with especially with kids involved.

I had the Pfizer vaccine back in April and May. I had no reaction to the vaccine except for some mild soreness at the injection site. It went away in about 24-30 hours.

It would be nice if Pattaya could open on 1 Oct. I just don't see it happening yet. I think he is being a little overly optimistic. I'm really waiting for ALL of Thailand to open back up.

I remember it well. Always kind of a PITA to make sure you had it with you.

Look for January 2022 at the earliest for Thailand to re-open with no quarantine required unless unvaccinated.

I've brought a lot of bikes into and out of Thailand many times over the years. I've used both soft sided and hard sided cases. I wouldn't suggest using a cardboard bike box as that might trigger the customs people into thinking the bike is new as that is what new bikes arrive in. Regardless of which case I use I always pack the bike in foam pipe insulation on the top tube, down tube, seat stays, forks, etc. for both road and mtn bikes. I also use bubble wrap for the derailleurs and handle bars. My word of advice is if you are buying a new bike abroad make sure to get out and ride it a few times. Make sure you get it a little bit dirty. Don't clean the bike before packing. You want it to look used!
