Almost all complaints about Thais and Thailand boomerang and actually apply to the poster himself. After a complaint about Thai stupidity is analyzed, it's discovered that the poster is stupid. That is, in this case, it is merely you who are annoying, even to yourself, and just not enjoyable to interact with. I don't find Thais annoying and I find it enjoyable to interact with them. That's one of the big reasons I live in Thailand. Even in tourist-shocked Pattaya, I can simply speak some Thai, smile, show good manners, and then, having distinguished myself from the idiots, I get friendly responses and service even from all those tough vendors.

I have enough of it, what are my options?

I should also point out that Apple gives you much better tech support than M'soft. Friend of mine, utterly clueless about computers, was having problems getting his Mac and all-dancing printer to communicate. Got Apple on the phone right away, and they spent 30 min patiently walking him through everything, click here, there, blah blah. He's a big user of support services and hates most of them. But he LOVED Apple's support, couldn't praise them highly enough. -

He didn't mention tabs. He said windows. He also didn't say "switching" between windows but closing and opening. That implies starting up a program. All programs, or particular programs? When? Any time? What other programs are also running? Oh--Norton😉 doing a scan, which he's installed and don't need. He would have to provide more details to analyze what he really means and fix it. Our forum experts will simply recommend a clean reinstall on an SSD. Fixing? Whassat? In any case, commonly used programs don't by default open slowly nowadays on Windows on reasonably modern hardware. Hardware and resource usage are in fact under control of the user by choice, whether he realizes it or not. Now, I run Fedora XFCE on an ancient throwaway netbook I keep around to tempt maids to steal in cheap hotel rooms. It's light and lovable, but it ain't fast. Open 15 tabs on Chromium, and it slows to a crawl, if Chromium doesn't outright freeze. Fedora itself don't crash, though, whereas Windows did. So that's all to the good. -
Bigger 'n' badder than ever, partly owing to low carb, just more bored w/ the forum. Rain's arrived in our beloved cesspool, as you've noticed. Stuck inside the other day, I decided I'd finally jump back in and have a few smiles. May not stay long. It's mostly a waste of time, talking to yourself. 😉

OK. Fastest way would be for you to right-click on the underlined sentence. Very useful acronym. It can be googled, BTW. -

OMG. But GIYF. --https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/widows-11-setting-default-program-for-jpg-files-is/f70ec1d9-3c63-4b80-9c80-fd91e19685f8 But enough spoonfeeding. Windows always has little issues, no matter the version. Linux, somebody would have to set up carefully for you, taking into account your sensitivities. MacOS is what you need. Meanwhile, while getting answers yourself, you're ignoring: -

You seem to have missed the point. Incidentally, I note that @BritManToo, biggest fatalist on the forum, after numerous smug assurances over the years about being ready to go at just any time, seems hardly ready to go after all. What a big effort at "recovery" in the hsp after his recent motorbike accident. Recovery? Why?

Ah. Yes, there is. Oh, Google around and learn how properly to change Win 11’s default apps. WOT? You mean when you, say, open a .pdf file with Adobe Acrobat Reader, Adobe also suggests that you should use Edge instead? OMG. It's a conspiracy. 1 GB occupies your almost full hard disk? ☹️ Why don’t you just go in and clean out all the crapware that’s tracing your habits and publishing the resulting crap? Have you received a Low Disk Space notification? Let’s have a screenshot of Disk Management to check the space on your puny drives. Now Google is suggesting you use Edge instead of Chrome when you check your email? M'soft has its tentacles everywhere! But in fact, if you use Edge for the purpose, Google will suggest you use Chrome instead. Why not? However, you may find that suggestion stressful. Some computer geek could probably tell you how to remove it. Using an email client will end your distress over that issue. Consensus holds that MacOS is about as dumbed down as a serious OS can get. Mac users love their Macs, love their apps, and never complain about any crapware. Favored among Thai ladies. Deprived users, now, might contend that a sunk cost fallacy lies at the bottom of such adoration, but—sour grapes, no doubt. Apple does have much to recommend it. -
Englishman fights for his life after motorbike crash in Phuket, Thailand

It's the ol' "swerved to avoid a pothole." No mention of the mythical "fine print" on the insurance policy. Or of any insurance policy. Horrific, though. May he survive. Good luck w/ that GFM. Our Brits band together and create a Provident Fund for their many uninsured countrymen crashing their motorbikes in Thailand and ending up on breathing tubes. -
Way to go in general. Corn starch--mostly to dilute the baking soda; with coconut oil, makes an oily paste. Better I found is to mix baking soda with Red Cock white spirits (kills them bugs) in small bottle. Experiment for the right concentration; 1 to 5's about right for me. Add a drop or two of essential oil. Shake just before applying. So that's the deo. Non-staining. Need heavier duty, rub on a Thai alum crystal stick for anti-perspirant. This lasts surprisingly well for most of the day and is easily reapplied. Commercial deos, besides overpriced, irritate my underarms.

Criminally misleading headline. The drives that failed, failed in under 3 years. The rest didn't fail. Overall the AFR was only 1.4 percent. So if your drive lasts longer than three years, as it almost certainly will, it's also probably going to last far longer. Yet any drive may fail whenever it d*mn well pleases, so be prepared for anything. I think the thread can be filled with anecdotes about old drives still running.

Lots of youtube vids, just do a search. If you're talking about a desktop, Here's one of the few that will allow a vacuum, with caution: Missing tools here are a couple of paintbrushes, great for removing leftover from the compressed air, attacking caked dust, and getting into crevices. Smaller one can get between fins of heatsinks. Paper towels, maybe dampened with rubbing alcohol or white vinegar to wipe out the dust. While you're in there you could remove the RAM and cards, notably the video card, clean the contacts w/ pencil eraser, and reseat.

In fact, it still could be, as he still hasn't yet got enough space.???? He should try with 32gb free before considering a reinstall and further flapping around. He'd downloaded the update to his external drive, he said. What you have is speculation claimed as fact, as you admit with "perhaps incomplete download." Perhaps.???? Nor does he necessarily need to "clear away" the supposed incomplete download. Running update again, running the Update Assistant, or running the Update Troubleshooter will likely deal with that, IF it's an issue. Avoid overcomplications, you see. But, alas, that reason is insufficient to discourage him from just clearing out plenty of space and trying the update again. And it won't take up even half the drive 'cause then he's got nothing left but Windows.???? On that account, a clean install is bad. He's been told that. And he'll have enough space for his eMMC to work well enough after he's moved all that data out--as well as, looks like, uninstalled some big programs. Putting it all back after the reinstall would defeat your proposed optimization. Windows almost never needs reinstalling. Thai technicians commonly resort to it for obvious reasons. Yes, ma'am, but I know what the error code means, so that angle won't help achieve that needed feeling of superiority. I suggest you simply work on building true self-confidence and self-esteem. That way you needn't get your knickers in a twist with worry that someone might be trying to be smarter than you; and, accordingly, get rude and argue when alternative, indeed better solutions are suggested. Now you've had a little help in this thread (and others) already, but I'm not sure it's quite enough yet. OP: In sum, OP, clear out all that space and try the update again. If no immediate joy, also try the Update Troubleshooter (remarkably, I've seen it be helpful on occasion), and the Update Assistant. Then go with the usual Thai tech solution if you prefer not to spend more time on a fix. I'm confident it can be fixed, however. Good news is that this is the last version of Win 10, but it will also be updated as usual on Patch Tuesdays, so you're still gonna need space. You can probably get away with keeping most of your files, esp. the big files, on your external drive; and then keeping only small, frequently accessed files on your eMMC. Above, WinDirStat was suggested for checking space and file sizes. I also suggest TreeSize, used that for years: https://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free See if there aren't portable versions of your programs to run from the external drive. Nothing I don't do myself, as I have 66GB of portable programs on an HDD to keep them off my system SSD. I have shortcuts to those I commonly use on a launcher, but you can pin them to Windows Start menu, of course. Create folders with shortcuts there if desired.
-
If I were you, after shifting everything over to the external HDD AND performed the cleanup procedures suggested in the thread (done that yet?), I'd see if I'd freed enough space to install the update in question--as lack of space seems to be the problem. Might work well, and then you've saved yourself some bother, not to say overkill.
-
You consciously missed the point to appear smarter than you are, making a nonsensical point of your own. I didn't suggest he reinstall. But IF he's going to reinstall, he could CONSIDER a tiny version, as well as Linux. Duh. But then he has none of his programs or data. Faster just to move the data off, which he'd have to do anyway, do the cleanup, now have half his drive back (or enough, anyway) and install his update. Or not, to save your fear of complication. Could just have all the old data there, folders bookmarked. He could then just move new data over as needed to conserve space. That could be easily automated. And just save larger files (such as downloaded videos) to the external drive by default. Despite your struggle to appear smarter than you are (important), you've failed to offer the best solution. Do you need some help getting over it? It's nearby and very effective.

How to continue with Tha social security after employment?
BigStar replied to OneMoreFarang's topic in Health and Medicine
What they said. If the Thai company has a competent HR dept. used to dealing with retiring foreigners, as mine did, they may be of great help in setting things up for you. Deal with your bank on the automatic withdrawal. (You never want to let your coverage lapse.) I didn't have to visit my SS office until many years later when I decided actually to take advantage of the insurance. That was because they'd already changed the system and rendered my old card and number invalid. I presented them my UTTERLY USELESS pink card and now they, and hospitals, use my foreign ID number. -
RIP Ubon Joe - ASEAN NOW visa expert

OMG. What a SHOCK. The end of an era and a big loss for the forum, needless to say. I believe he was the best we'll ever have in his specialty. Look forward to a few more details. RIP, Joe. -
Unnecessary, tedious, and the problem will just recur. Yeah, we always have a lot of "shoulds" around here. It all depends. He's been told about the cleaning. One man's ease is another's difficulty. If he moves most of that data off the drive, then of course he can find the space. He hasn't said exactly how much he has. I assume he doesn't have a lot of big apps on there. He could leave the user libs at default and just link to folders with older data on the external disk. That'll be fine for while, anyway.
-
Moving your data over and adjusting the user library folders accordingly is doable. Moving programs, no. Perhaps you can put portable versions of some of your programs on the 500gb and uninstall the full versions from your system drive. That eMMC memory isn't upgradable. Your computer doesn't have a slot for a microSD card, where you could move your data? Probably no port for an SSD. External USB drive might be the best you can do. There are smaller versions of Windows around and if you were knowledgeable you could customize one for yourself. You could try tiny11: https://old.reddit.com/r/tiny10/. Otherwise, as others have said, get into Linux if it doesn't have issues w/ your computer model. You can google for other users' experiences. That's what I did for my throwaway low-end laptop. Your problem isn't uncommon w/ netbooks etc.

While offering no numbers of your own. But if they reflect bad news, we believe them wholeheartedly. Then we may even reverse our older sneers about last year's good figures and endorse them so that we can enhance the dramatic contrast and portent of the current bad news.
