And now your part of Hat Yai will be inundated with expats for 6 months of the year. I would issue some negatives immediately!
Hat Yai's a well known war zone, bombs going off all the time, hordes of Muslims ~ certainly not for your average expat

No I'm not joking. I've suffered from asthma for most of my life but never had an attack in Pattaya. East Coast has the cleanest air in Thailand.
I'll be staying in Hat Yai and my east coast, you can keep your east coast.

No, best air quality is East coast. West coast can suffer from burning in Indonesia and Malasia at times. Try Rayong not Ranong. What a difference that one letter makes.
What with the chemical plants and bad air from Bangkok - you must be joking!

Besides, the biggest problem isn't the bags themselves. It's the lack of solid waste management to handle bags, bottles and all the other waste.
Indeed, the bigger issue with plastic is what Thais do with it after use!
Education in proper disposal, and local authorities implementing measures to recycle should be as much a part of any attempt to reduce the use of plastic bags.
There also needs to be some element of common sense. Whilst getting the supermarkets and 7-Elevens to stop handing out endless numbers of bags is doable. Little bags for sauces and liquids at foodstalls, or bags for raw meat and fish, they are not easily replaced.

It's always been popular at weekends and public holidays for Thai families as a good day out, but it's become a popular destination for Malaysians too. The last few trips we've made I've noted the increasing number of Malaysian families. Thai families are usually found picnicking under the Casuarina trees along the beach front; the town's cleaners do great job of clearing up after them.

Several years ago, there was a motorcycle bomb set off outside the seven eleven.
On April 3rd 2005, a bomb planted on a motorcycle, exploded in front of Green World Hotel in Songkhla without causing any damage, injuries or deaths. This was part of three attacks that day, the most serious being at Hat Yai Airport where a bag exploded in the departure hall killing two and injuring 47.
As a result of the 2005 bombings security within Songkhla province, which until then had been largely untouched by the southern insurgency, was tightened significantly. Subsequent attacks in Songkhla have largely been within the southern parts bordering Yala and Pattani Provinces, with the exception of bombings in Hat Yai in Sept 2006, May 2007, March 2012 and May 2014.
However, on the night of 27th December 2018 two explosions damaged the Songkhla Mermaid, a further three unexploded pipe bombs were later discovered by police along the beach front. Apart from the statue there were no other damage.
I would still say Songkhla Town is a sleepy hollow, and a very peaceful place. We've lived in Hat Yai since 2005 and even given what I've said above, we consider it a safe city and a pleasant place to live. There are dangers to consider living anywhere, Hat Yai's increased security means it's probably safer than many places. But keeping your wits about you is good advice wherever you live.
