Ours is probably 25 years old, no lights, only addition are the pots the legs stand in that you keep topped up with water to keep ants out. People in the west have just gone soft.

Switching to a new phone - massive ballache
Stocky replied to scubascuba3's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
Couple years since I last changed phones but my recollection of moving Samsung to Samsung was surprisingly painless. -
Other way round I think, the modern Western fixation with trying to live in a totally sanitised environment means westerners have lost that immunity or resilience to bacteria.

Same here, though food isn't left out on the table, ants would be at it by morning, but we have a cabinet in the kitchen, metal sides with ventilation mesh, glass doors, the legs sit in little pots you fill with water to keep the ants away. Uneaten food goes in there, used up next day. In 20 years no one's died.

As suggested above one Will for assets in the UK, second Will covering assets in Thailand, and make sure the wife makes a Thai Will too - saves any potential dramas with Thai family looking for a share

Nationwide transfer
Stocky replied to salavan's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
"Transaction fee for SWIFT payments We charge a £15 transaction fee for SWIFT payments." https://www.nationwide.co.uk/help/payments/swift-sepa-international-payments/ Kasikorn and Krungsri both charge a flat fee of Bht500, you get the prevailing TT Rate. -

What is up with tattoos and tourists / expats here?
Stocky replied to Maxbkkcm's topic in General Topics
I'd say the general observation still holds true. I work in the mining industry, on several projects globally, and my observation is that the number of tattoos correlates with education level; the fewer the greater the chance the person holds at least one degree. Yes there are exceptions, so it's not a matter of discrimination, rather that better educated generally people don't get tattooed or have very few. -

Farage’s Political Earthquake Begins to Rattle Britain’s Foundations
Stocky replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Thanks for the update, it was 65k prior to this years increase, it has never been imaginary as your prior post stated, nor do you have any right to bring a foreign wife to the UK, they can indeed stop you. -
Farage’s Political Earthquake Begins to Rattle Britain’s Foundations
Stocky replied to Social Media's topic in World News
I'm perfectly aware of the requirements to take a foreign spouse to the UK, so there's nothing I'm 'not getting'. However, the bit I don't get is your sudden change of tune from the post I responded to which said 65k savings was imaginary, it isn't. -
Farage’s Political Earthquake Begins to Rattle Britain’s Foundations
Stocky replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Sorry but you're wrong there. If I wanted to move back to the UK and take my Thai wife with for longer than 180 days per year she needs to apply for a Spouse Visa. Currently the requirements are either I have a job with an income of at least £29,000 per annum (can be combined income if wife had employment too), or savings of at least £65,000. The financial requirements were brought in in 2012 by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition. -

The EverMaskers - “The people who may never stop masking”
Stocky replied to Red Phoenix's topic in Covid/Vaccine
I thought the US was supposedly the Land of the Free, if 4% of Americans wish to still wear a mask then that's their choice and none of your business. Given the cost of medical care in the US if your health is at all fragile a simple mask is probably a good investment. -

That it is. The southern border is lucrative territory, as most borders are. There's plenty of money to be made in smuggling, whether cigarettes & alcohol, drugs & people or anything else there's a market for. Gangs kill to control the best routes and maintain monopolies, and the southern insurgency provides a handy cover. Those 'gangs' include local mafia, various Muslim separatist groups, as well as corrupt officials, police, army and defence volunteers.

Yes, we had a spell, prior to COVID, of Mormon missionaries canvassing our neighbourhood looking for converts. The ones doing the talking were Korean women, with a couple of young American men loitered around giving orders, the Koreans could speak Thai. Thankfully not seen them since COVID.

Reform have largely been a single issue party simply throwing stones from the side-lines, they now have 10 councils to run. It will be interesting to see how they fare.- 151 replies
