  1. Seriously Zpete, the flight gets in at 11:00 at night and you plonk yourself down for 6 hours in the airport in the middle of the night as opposed to grabbing a 60$US bed at the airport hotel?

Agreed, that 10$ an hour bed is too expensive, but better than being all tired and waking up with neck and/or back problems from a crappy airport chair.

Oh well, different strokes for different folks......

Well best book the Hotel tried before the walk in and, got no rooms for 2 weeks last time :)

    An update for ZPETE,

Typical for Air Asia, the flight to KL was delayed, so I didn't actually get into the airport hotel and in my room until 1:15AM. Shower and down, probably out at 2:15AM, had to be up at 5:15 to get over to LCCT for the 6:00AM check in.

With taxes, 75$US for three hours, so ZPETE you are probably right about just hunkering down in the terminal. That was a waste of 75 bucks.

In the future I'll just do the late night Cebu Pacific flight from BKK and sleep on the plane.

  2. "The question is who does this ? who closes small sections of the beach and monitors the situation ???"

With no real lifeguards it's the beach chair guys like longtime beach chair guy K. Dewey. We had a young Thai girl drown about a month ago and he was really shook up. He was asking me "how can they let their kids go so far in the water when they cannot swim?"

OP, some things will not change unless you want to open up a free swimming lessons program.

Keep draggin em out, when in the water notice the kids getting in too deep and tell them to go in a bit, that's what I do. I average 3-4 rescues a year, my friends who surf during low season, one a week.

  3. I know a place where you can almost always get a decent fried egg - and over-easy done correctly at least 70% of the time....

    But then I'm biased. :)

I agree Woody, now that Don's is closed I find your place acceptable replacement for breakfast.

Possible to get a fresh fruit plate? What you don't use you could use for smoothies?

  4. I do not have kids, but I understand there is a big new International School in Thalang. Also, there in Thalang you will find very affordable housing in some new neighborhoods.

Not too far from the big shopping areas, Central, Lotus Big C etc.

A bit of a ways from the beach though, but from there and about a 20-30 minute drive can easily access northern beaches.

    There's my two satangs worth.

  5. When in Thailand..................

I probably eat Thai food 80% of the time.

    It is usually awesome.

Now, getting Thai people to cook western food does not go over well IMO.

Probably the same problems if you would try to cook their food.

I've been trying to teach my wife how to make "eggs over easy" for 6 years now.

She gets it right about 10% of the time.

But she can make a dam_n good Larb Moo!

I live in Rawai and if I want to, can have Mexican, Middle Eastern, Indian, Italian, French, German, Swedish, foods all within 2 kms from my house. And a 15 baht banana shake too!

I'm appreciating the food here. Sorry you are not.

I think the OP needs some miracle berries to pump up his tatse buds

  6. O.K. as a foreigner here, not involved in politics here is my 2 satangs worth to ending the problem.

Take the 43 billion taken from Thaksin's ill gotten gains, and tell each one of those red shirts that on the way out of town they will get 5,000thb.

And, if they agree to stay home, another 5,000 next month.

  7. The above is the way I do it.

    Late flite fromPhuket.

Unfortunately nowhere comfortable to doss down at KL_LCC airport.

    Free WiFi at LCC.

I plonk myself down in a comfy chair at "Coffee Bean & Tealeaf Cafe"

They have great coffees, very BIG MUGS , some great tukka, speshully pastries.

Ask one of the staff to wake you about 0530hrs in case you doze off.

  8. Have some knowledge myself, seems you never went to the right restaurants.

Some restaurants in Thailand are on the same level as 1-2 michelin star restaurants in Holland , Belgium and France

And if you cant find the right one , just keep cooking for yourself.

    Good Luck

So how about pointing me in the good direction? But please do not mention M&M, Da Vinci, Amalfi, Ellis !

Give The Family a go, nice mediterranean food, chicken pita excellent. It's at the entrance of the little Tesco Lotus on Viset in Chalong.

Fatties in Chalong has some good food.

  9. Be sure and bring converters with you next time you come. I always bring them with me. If you check out equipment before you buy them and bring then overseas many have dual capabilities such as computers and printers.

Try the local Thai hardware shops--never know what you can find there-but I found one a few years ago. Major stores such as Tesco , Big C may have I have them. I have seen them in Patong Carrefore.

Sorry I know not much help

As Capealava mentions probably the Tesco/Big C area which is on the road to the airport will be your best chance.

  10. as i am a mug who has bought a condo there i am glad its overpriced and deters crowds. it was never meant to be open to the public, they have reneged on their original statements that it would be for residents only....why am i not surprised!

You really thought the developers would build a whole water-park just for the residents?

    You must be very naive.

C'mon now Karen, he already referred to himself as a "mug".

Someone already duped the guy into buying into a project way away from anything that might never get finished.

    Feel badly for the guy.......

  11. Why would they build that all the way out in Mai Khao anyway? Might work in Kathu or somewhere more central, maybe they can lift the whole thing out and put it by the Outlet mall there at bypass and airport road........

These people managing this West Sands project are idiots, it's taken them years to get where they are now, still just inching toward completion, someone has some serious deep pockets as they are not even close to making any money.

  12. The other members have given sound advice, do the daytrip to Railay be sure to get back to the longtail boat to get back to Ao Nang at 5:00.

If you wait until 6:00, they will say cannot and charge you something outrageous.

Also, do an afternoon and evening in Krabi town. Better prices on shopping, good food on the pier at the river. really nice. Krabi town completely underrated.

  13. Does anyone familiar with Thai labor laws or legislation, know anything about additional vacation day allowances for longterm employment with one company?

I know after one year typical is 7 days vacation time.

But is there any Thai labor law or legislation that says after two years you get an additional two days, four years four days, anything like that?

edit: sorry for the mispelling on the topic title, should be "accrued"

  14. Currently it's Cebu Pacific Bangkok to Clark, but miserable timing, late night flight getting you there at about 4:00 in the morning.

Other option is Phuket to KL, then you have to overnight in the Airport Concorde Hotel as the flight KL to Clark leaves at 7:00AM.

  15. Lights are now working, though it appears traffic flow wasn't taken into consideration. Going from Rawai to Chalong, you have about 20 seconds to go straight, then it's a 60 second wait. From Chalong to Rawai, it's around 50 seconds and the right turn arrow is on for the first 30 seconds or so. That makes around 30 seconds for those coming from Sai Yuan to turn right onto Vichit.

Wonder why the lights are set up for those going from Rawai only get 20 seconds. Makes no sense to me to have the main road with such a short green light. I can see in the very near future this light being ignored for those going straight.

Also, the genius drivers here when it's clear and safe to do a left onto Viset from Sai Yuan under the red, are not going, thus backing things way up.

Oncoming stopped by the light as people make the left from Viset onto Sai Yuan, no reason people cannot proceed left safely toward Chalong.

  16. Had one of those Rossi types, a tatted up German Muay Thai guy, come around the bend on Sai Yuan doing 100kph on a road where you should do 40-60. I was looking the other way to pull out, turned to my right and started to edge out when ZOOM, Euro nut is just about on me and I let out a "WHOA".

Anyway, nothing happened I pulled out safely and on my way when the steroided out maniac pulls up next to me and says "whats your problem" "F*** you" "I'm going to F**** you up" and was seriously inciting an altercation.

Great I'm thinking, I'm on my way to work, almost have this nut hit me, now he wants to fight.

  17. I highly doubt the police are "having a perv" otherwise they would have faced the camera toward the topless Euro ladies as opposed to fully clothed Thais having lunch by the lagoon.

As far as the one on the road, absolutely necessary due to recent assults on women in the area.

Hmmmmmmm............I wonder if you can connect the dots between scantily clad Euros and the assaults..........

  18. Do you have a web source to back up that claim ??

I have always been told that your home drive license must be supported by an IDP when driving in Thailand, assuming you don't have a license from another ASEAN country. I've never heard of a 90 day 'allowance'. When I first arrived here I only had my UK license, no IDP, and after an accident the policeman would not accept my UK license. Admit that my UK license was the old style and did not have a photo.

Edit - a quick google search found this ...

"Valid Thai or International Driving Licences are accepted"

    and on another site...

"An international driver's license is accepted in Thailand. A foreign license holds no weight here. If you decide to stay in Thailand you should obtain a Thai license. Some Insurance companies will put in fine print in Thai that you must be the holder of a CURRENT DRIVERS LICENSE which means a THAI DRIVERS' LICENSE not an international to claim insurance if you have an accident."

Time to get a Thai drivers license............

So as to not waste a whole day, can any members tell me exactly what I need to take to the Department of Motor Vehicles (pictures, documents, etc.) and also where the building is in Phuket Town? Is it near Immigration or the Labor Department building?

    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers.

  19. Still waiting for an actual Thai person to respond as to how Thais handle such a situation. Are there any on this Forum?

Lots of nice stories, a scottish yarn and some truly keenyow posters though............3000thb for a month, amazing Thailand!

  20. hey Thanks for the reply on Railey beach

i have a question, i am staying at both krabi and Phuket, so which place would be cheaper to take trip for phi phi and phnang bay tour and how much is the approx cost of the tour..

    thanks for your reply

Andaman Wave Master out of Rassada Pier Phuket is 600thb roundtrip. They give you a little mini tour of Phi Phi, show you Maya Bay (The Beach) and the Viking Cave and then you get a few hours too doink around Phi Phi Don. If you stay the night out there you can book a more extensive tour, sunset tour of Phi Phi Lei, another 600-800thb.

Phang Nga Bay tour best done from Phuket, closer.

I disagree with the assessment of Railei, Phra Nang Cave Beach is one of my favorite beaches in Thailand. it's just a bummer that all of Railei is getting overrun by vendors (other thread).

    Have fun !

  21. UPDATE

    Aussie awaits Phuket drug trial

    gallery_327_1086_115932.jpg

Mr Beaver (far right) with other drug suspects at Chalong Police Station in Phuket.

PHUKET: -- An Australian man arrested for possession of marijuana in Phuket faces a possible prison sentence of up to a year and a fine of up to 20,000 baht.

Richard Beaver, 28, was arrested on March 16 by Chalong Police and presented in court the next day.

The tourist, who is currently out on bail, is awaiting formal charges to be filed by the prosecutor, a process that can take up to 84 days.

Mr Beaver entered Thailand on March 10 and planned to stay for one month.

"Right now we are still investigating and collecting evidence and it may take a month until we can send the case to the prosecutor. After that, it is up to the prosecutor to decide on a trial date," said Duty Officer Tianchai Duangsuwan.

"Although out on bail, the suspect must remain in Thailand until the conclusion of the case," he added.

Does anyone else find it interesting that that TV star Athip Nana, who was caught with 31 grams of pot and .2 grams of cocaine, received a two year suspended sentence and a 12,000thb fine?
