  1. .. do they really think all white skinned people in Pattaya speaks Russian?

    Yes!

They are genuinly surprised people here don't speak and understand Russian, they even expect Thais to understand Russian. They often think Thais dont respond to Russian on purpose, out of spite. I know this, because I often here them discussing it.

Don't forget, majority of Russian tourists here are from Siberia, what used to be industrial cities in Soviet times, Novosibirsk, Habarovsk and similar.

People from Moscow and St Petersburg are nothing like the Russians we see here.

I am Estonian, my home town Tallinn has 40% Russian population, relocated to my country to work in factories in Soviet years. Russians who live closer to Europe are very different from Siberians. Main difference, they speak and understand English.

  2. JT - The driver obviously believed you breached the 10B travelling distance.

I don't care what he believed. Nobody has a right to physically attack a person, unless you are attacked first. In this case there was not even verbal insults towards the driver.

Im curious, where do you draw the line.

What if the driver had consumed more yaba than his regular daily dose, and he decided to kill the OP. Would that also be acceptable to you?

I am really coriuous, maybe you find the time to reply! It is a sensible question, I feel. Because after vicious assault, the only step further is killing a man.

  3. Yes, we would like to know the facts. But for some reason the information about the route taken is being guarded as if it were a state secret.

So you feel that the driver is not guilty of assaulting a passanger?

What difference does the route and lenght of the route make here?

A foreigner was beat up. I dont care what route it was, even if the route was to the moon.

How can people here justify an assault, a guy being seriously beat up? Most posters seem to think it is perfectly normal being assaulted over 10 baht fare dispute.

Lets switch sides, what would happen to me I attack a Thai guy, and seriously hurt him. What do you think would then happen to me? My guess is, if I somehow stay alive, and I really doubt I would, the jail sentence would be several years.

But Thai beating up a foreigner.. All you guys are demanding what was the route.

    It is sickening!

  4.

Off topic, except for the fact that now he argues over 10 baht on the tuk tuks he has to ride. I feel his pain, but...quite seriously...10 baht?

I get what you say, your friend was taken for a ride, and it cost him considerable amount. But your friend is victim of a common scam, he wasnt extorted.

Being extorted in the middle of a day, feels like you are taken for a fool. It is not a good feeling. I fully understand Op resisting to give in. I would too.

But I would try to sense the moment, after which things will likely become violent, and I would pay the amount that is extorted from me.

This is Thailand, and it has its rules.

If anything similar would ever happen to me in eurolands, some bus driver trying to assault me, it wouldnt be me being assault victim.

But this isnt euroland, so I turn into a pathetic, submissive sheep for 6 months of the year, that Im here.

  5. So it was a 10bht ''rip off'' PLUS something you will not discuss.

Perhaps the 10 bht top up is to do with the something you will not reveal ?

    transam,

One of us here was beat up in the middle of a day in Pattaya. Yet you attempt light humour about how small was the amount, that almost sent one of our guys to a hospital.

What difference is there, if the assault took place over 10 baht, or 10.000 baht, it is still extortion.

  6. I was going to suggest that the OP move elsewhere in Thailand but I suspect that it would make no difference....

Why would OP have to move anywhere?

Do you think he did anythinh wrong? Did you read the 1st post of the thread?

I think you didnt, so I lay it out for you in simple words.. .Baht bus driver attacked him, Op was physically hurt, OP is victim of assault.

And your twisted logic tells you he needs to move!?

  7. You can even file case in tourist court.

In all honestly, do not be scared of he might do, he will not do anything.

That would be the right thing to do, no doubt.

But if I was Jt, I would leave it at that and try to forget.

You say the driver will not do anything to retaliate. Maybe he wont, but maybe he will, if a farang f*cks with his livelyhood, there is no telling what lenght he may go to get 'even'

I think many drivers know each other, I often see them chatting at the pick up place at the school, and opposite corner going towards dolfin round.

I take baht bus several times a day, and im starting to remember drivers faces, so do they, with people who ride frequently.

I understand Jt uses baht bus very often, commuting Jomtien to Pattaya

Jt, pls dont do a thing about this assault. You lose, we always lose here.

I would advise you to give driver the extra 10, if he keeps demanding, to the point of assaulting you. I know he has no right to demand the extra 10 baht, it is extortion. But thats how it is here.

Give him the extra coin, if he demands, and stay healthy, my friend!

  8. Would it really be so bad to hire a native english speaking editor ?

What if we didn't have any newspapers here in English? This is Thailand, we are lucky that we are catered local news in English at all!. But you whine over some grammar mistakes.

I hope no more people die in street clashes, it is sad to watch young guys losing their lives over what should be peaceful demonstration, and not a street riot.

  9. I guess they may now be getting serioous and take action next against the 101 businesses on Walking Street.

    No.

People who operate on Walking st have good sence of keeping up with payments.

These people with their hotel in 'violetion' with Thailands building codes pushed their luck bit too far.

How did they not know that adding some floors to existing building without proper, up to date payments is asking for trouble.

It is a lesson and teachable moment for other property owners. Have the envelope, or in this case a suitcase ready, and delivered on time.

  10. I am aware Starbucks is pure evil, and possibly devil himself. And I do read posts about how coffee there is awful, and how they sued some guy in BKK, while all he was doing was using Starbucks logo.

I feel terrible every time I sit at their table right outside, and drink their awful awful corporate coffee! I am a bad person :(

  11.

Previously you'd merely exploited an oversight in city planning :) to wax pampered and spoiled, walking on the sidewalk with an undue sense of privilege

I never really thought about the purpose of sidewalks that way..

Somehow I always assumed sidewalks are there for people to walk. I am now starting to realize how twisted my thinking has been all these years.

For once I was blind, now I can see.

(by the way, in case somone is wondering about this 'sent from C6802' line at the bottom,

It means its sent from Sony Z Ultra tablet.

I could have easily unmarked the little box in TV android app, and you'd never know which device was used, but Im really proud of my new tablet :)

Seriously tho, it is a very nice tablet! Fits in front pocket, so you wont break it in half having it in your back pocket, as I did 3 days ago to my Nexus 7 2013 :(

  12. The other side of Beach rd, the side with street vendors, and shops and bars is not really a sidewalk, trying to walk on that side is just not humanly possible.

Every day I navigate to Starbucks on the corner of soi 13/1. Over the past few years I have developed a technique, that allows me to get to Starbucks with very little stress.

Now, with the narrower sidewalk on beach side of the street, and on days of junk festivivals, I am half dead and angry by the time I get to my coffee. Yesterday I walked on road, next to cars. It is dangerous to walk between cars, but I figure if car should hit me, no big deal, day was ruined anyway.

Im sitting at Starbucks right now, getting here today was heavenly experience, cos Beach rd is closed to traffic! I wish every day will be like today!

OT, I noticed the issue of six pack was not addressed.

  13. Yes, but Chatuchak is market, if you go there you are prepared to move with a flow, at speed of 1meter per minute. Beach Rd is suppose to promenade, a place where people walk

Turning beach Rd into a nigh market is nothing new, I agree that walking there during those festivals and market days was never fun, but now with sidewalk narrower, it is near impossible to walk there.

  14.

OMG. Now I've lost the will to live. Posted Image

Nah, you haven't. You just dont care about the once nice promenade. For you its a win, you have one more car lane now.

I tryed to walk on Beach Rd Wed night, coulnd't walk, there is no room to walk between tents selling some crap, and tables and food stalls on other side of walkway.

Between tents and food stalls there was about 1m of space, crammed w people trying to walk. So I took baht from Mikes to Pattaya Tai.

I walk that route about 6 times every day, but when the road is lined w vendors, the place is hopeless.

  15. They are selling Valium etc.openely on the street in Bangkok. They even have the boxes on the stalls next to the dildos and butt plugs Posted Image

Is it possible you are making up a story about Diazepam, and dildos being offered for sale in the streets of BKK?

    Just name the street, please!

In my 10 yrs here, I have yet to see a street vendor offering any of this. I think you are making stuff up, for God knows what reason

Name the street and aproximate location, where street vendors are selling items that are both illigal to sell in this country! Or admit you posted some fairy tale

  16. Pharmacies, ya donk! Don't you know how to make plurals in English? And you write for what passes for a newspaper?

Seems we have large number of English teachers here. Do all our grammar champions not realize this is not a classroom here.

These raids of pharmacy's make life harder for people with genuine sleeping problems.

Thiefs and crooks will find other ways to make robbing customers easier for them, if no access to benzos, then maybe they will use blunt object next time.
