  1. I have two tires to offer. 225/70-R15. They came off of a Caribbean Sporty. Brand is Nankang. They are street tires, not off-road tread. Still plenty of life and tread left in them. If you're wanting them for personal use or to help your family out, the price is 200 baht each or one decent, hot pizza when you show up to collect them. If you're wanting them to help support a non-profit group, they are free. Just send a PM to schedule a time to see them or pick them up.

  2. I commend a valiant effort, but find it still lacking in humor and subtlety. I sense we still have a disgruntled camper, who has yet to grasp the complexities of the game. ;)

    Yes, a fine effort.

Truly, everyone who contributes helps to make this thing successful.

VF, stop by when you can and when you're on the bike. I need to investigate that helmet you're wearing. Not what is inside it; just the helmet.

VF, has a pretty nice helmet. At times having a convertable fullface helmet can be an advantage, as long as the locking mechanism is sound.

I didn't really look at it before but noticed it had the two visors. Wife is looking at getting a decent stock here and wants to get as much info as possible so she can stock the best value for the money.

  4. Wife says the yellow noodle dish is called keaw sai kai. I probably haven't spelled that correctly. She says the shop is called por jai. That probably isn't spelled correctly, either. Same family as the dude who built the White Temple, the clock tower and lots of other stuff in this area.

  5. Sorry for this late reply. Was intending for it to post at 3:00am after a nite out with the girls.

Here is a light hearted humerous banter and reply.

We must have a Bull here. Maybe more than One. Haven't seen it, but have discovered it's excrement and feces spewed about.

Where there is a Cow, there must be a Bull.

This is definately not Cow excrement called CS, it is different and is called BS in English, and Bak Yai, Kee Kwi in Thai.

I know BS when I see it.

The Chickens must be "On the Lamb" or scea's Sheep since they heard about the Colonel's new chicken coating recipe.

Ducks are out of the water and over at the Little Duck accomodations since the thing with the local water quality.

Chiang Rai is not unlike Khao San Road. There is a fair share of Budget Accomodations available.

Just follow the "back packers" and ask for the "Cheap Charlie" or "Kee Nee Ow" discount rate. There reportedly have been some Pigs spotted at those locations.

You probably won't have to look to hard to find a Pig there.

No Need to drive a car and contribute to the smoke, pollution, traffic, and parking problems in the huge metropolis of Chiang Rai.

Becoming Cosmopolitin like Bangkok, Sydney, London, New York and San Francisco.

Instead it has been suggested to utilize the efficiant local Mass Transit system and the highly accredited local tour operators.

No worries mate, relax and enjoy the high speed mini van trip that will quickly whisk you and companions on the ride of a lifetime.

If not a mini van, then take one of our very VIP buses that will rock you too and fro as it meanders thru the traffic maze.

Be sure to bring all your Gas masks and other respiratory protectors as the Thai AQI (Air Quality Index) is a farce and published only to daze and confuse the unsuspecting into believeing the air is fit to breathe or partake in outdoor activities.

Chiang Rai is still a part of Thailand and TIT.

We have a resident "greeter and meeter" who offers to "Rendezvous" with people from the internet for "coffee and activity suggestions".

But the greeter admits to not getting out too much. Hmmmmmmm. Indoor Sports and Activities ?

The greeter is also our resident funny person who can take a topic to where it shouldn't go and is full of knowledge on everything. Just review the posts and judge for yourself.

Then we have those that don't want you to come to their little corner of the world. They hate Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai and say Chiang Rai is different than Thailand. The only thing different in Chiang Rai is the availability quotiant. The buy me drink game is down to a science in Chaing Rai.

The companion whom you have bought drinks for all day or nite has the same old excuses or somehow dissapears only to return to the game the next night.

Most of these "haters" don't admit to going out to the local pubs, but are regularly seen tossing a few back, gossiping with the boyz, and playing with the girls at some of the finest establishments in Chiang Rai.

There is deffintion of this type of behavior in the encyclopedia.

But then, I don't know anything and don't have anything constructive to post unlike many of our happy posters from the Rai, so I might as well end with this one.

    Adios

Don't go to bragging about me. You make me shy.

And don't go away mad. You're contributions are just as needed and welcome as any others, as long as they don't include calling the others "ignorant" because they differ with you. To respectfully differ is okay, isn't it? You do post some good, informative stuff here.

I don't get out much. I'm always glad when I do get an excuse. Recently got br549 settled into a decent room for a decent rate and showed him around town and little bit out of town as well, including Don's. Enjoyed a half day off because of br549. I needed it. But that doesn't happen every week.

  6. Behind the Wang Come, opposite side of the street, is a fantastic yellow noodle dish on offer. Popular place, don't know the name of it. Don't know the name of the dish either. I just point or have the wife order. The best Thai dish in town, for my taste buds. Someone else will know what it is called. I don't need to know. They know me and they know what I always order.

  7. Just did it again. Was down for about four minutes.

All other sites are working good during that outage.

  8. I get lots of "This page is unavailable" when I access TV these days. That has been going on for two months. All other site's pages open properly. TV pages will begin to open again after a few minutes of trying. Maybe it is my computer, though. I dunno.

That maintenance thing on Sunday evenings is a pain in the butt. It would be nice if they did it at 03:00 instead of peak times.

  9. That's right. The bike show starts at around three today. Supposed to be on one of the basketball courts near the jail park.

I don't worry about the dogs. They make pretty good hotdogs if ground properly.

I will do the flyover one day. Make sure your roof is screwed down tight. I don't want it following me as I leave the village.

I hope the FIL gets better soon. Sorry to hear he's down.

  10. Okay. That's why I asked. I'll try to get over to that garage BEFORE you get the alarm thing done. I'm running a little behind on my burgling right now but I can readjust my priorities.

I understand the flexibility in configuration thing. I knew a woman like that once. Pretty cool.

Your projects sound interesting. Lemme know when they are complete. I'll add your place to the short list of tourist stops that I suggest to out-of-towners.

I wouldn't dream of suggesting you have too much time on your hands. I know what it is like to have too many projects to complete before going to that big shop in the sky. I stay way too busy, typically. I spent today screwing on the roof of the wife's new shop. No. Wait. That didn't sound right. I spent the day screwing a steel roof onto the wife's new shop. There. That's better.

Anyway, stop by sometime. I might have a few things here that you could use to complete a project more quickly or efficiently. I do have a mig that makes short work of some projects. I promise not to wear my shoes across the carpet and touch your nose.

  11. Quote: Sorry for being so ignorant on electrical technicals, I genuinely have no idea what its for, please explain. As for CR , im ok with that :D

You aren't asking me but I do have some input here.

There are two types of low voltage terminators that I know of.

One is basically a multi-junction block where you can connect a variety of incoming/outgoing wires to the various terminals and you can choose to jumper them in various configurations. The blocks have receptacles for the wires and little screws for securing the wires inside, or on top of, the individual receptacles. The unit itself it made of an insulating material.

The second one is much more common and is normally cheaper. That type of low-voltage terminator is when you shuffle across your carpet in your shoes and then reach out with one finger and touch the tip of your kid's nose. Great fun. It typically isn't as cheap when you do the same thing to your wife. It's probably going to cost you.

  12. I was talking to my wife from the Middle East yesterday and asked her how much or little smoke haze there was around Wiang Nuea. She tells that there is not much at all and no-one is having any respiratory problems: runny noses, coughs etc. Has anyone noticed any bad cases of the smoke overwhelming their neck of the woods? I bought some carbon impregnated disposable masks for the family for any rough days.

    Hey Garry.

I can't really see the smoke in town too much. On the days I get out where I can see the mountains, it is very apparent. I went to Mae Sai two days ago and the mountains were tinged a dark blue, from a distance.

My sinuses have started having fits and the old eyes are itching constantly. So, it is strong enough to be annoying me.

On another note, I owe you an apology. I dropped the ball with you and I'm sorry. You asked me for some info and I passed on the request to "higher up" but an answer didn't come back and I forgot all about it until just now. I hope you were able to find a good place to get your trouble remedied. At the time you asked, I had a lot of other things distracting me and your request just fell off of the ol' radar.

  13. It is ok to be funny sometimes , but not go overboard. That has hapened a lot recently on this and other topics.

Lets not drag a topic in an off-topic direction full of diatribe, personal attacks, and sillyness.

I was not trying to be a know it all. If that is how it was perceived I appologize, it was not intended in that manner. I was making an honest attempt to answer questions without going off topic or being silly. My reply did not call for the improper personal attacks that followed. It is not within Forum Rules and Guidelines to outright attack another.

In Thailand, there are laws and rules regulating "Slander".

How does your reply pertain properly to this person's or subsequent following questions about Le Meridian, Hotels, the Area, and driving and parking in Chiang Rai ?

Here is the original Forum Topic Question:

    theoldgit user_popup.png Posted 2011-02-07 15:51:06

My other half won a nights stay in Le Meridian from the Bangkok Post, she not sure whether to take advantage of it or not, they say the voucher is worth 10,000 THB but I assume that's the the rack rate.

Do you local members think it's worth a visit and if so is it worth extending our stay, what's to see in the vicinity?

    Thanks in advance.

    theoldgit

Quote : It is ok to be funny sometimes , but not go overboard.

Is this a rule or your opinion? Who decides what is overboard? You? Nah. Other people get paid to do THAT job.

    Quote: Slander

Huh? What slander? Calling other posters ignorant?

Quote: I was making an honest attempt to answer questions without going off topic or being silly. My reply did not call for the improper personal attacks that followed.

I'll let your previous words answer that one.- "Please ignore the ignorant posts of a few."

I think theoldgit got the basic info he needed. And he has been offered more info on other rooms if he extends his stay. All he has to do is ask.

I am not up to speed on all of the tourist attractions. I know of the three types that I mentioned. theoldgit is certainly smart enough to read between the lines and he may actually enjoy a smile along the way. Others have suggested a few sights to see. And once the dude arrives, he will see all the same banners and advertisements for the rest of the sights that we all see. I don't have ALL of the answers but he got the ones I do have. I was pretty proud of them.

Parking in this town sucks for automobile drivers. Plain and simple. However, if a person isn't averse to walking a ways, it can be done. But to say parking isn't a problem, especially when you know nothing of the other man's physical condition or limitations, is bad info. If he's a spring chicken, he'll be okay. If he is old and wore out or damaged, he is in for some consternation. But you are entitled to your opinion. I'm not going to call you ignorant. I'm just going to tell you that you're wrong. There's a difference, in the sense of the word as you used it.

It isn't your forum. And if others operate in a different manner than you, it is okay, whether you think it is or not.

Lastly, if you can't take it, don't dish it out. This thing can be fun, as well as informative. Get used to it.

  14. There is a decently priced Suzuki in the CR TV ads today.

    http://classifieds.thaivisa.com/automotives-vehicles/cars/1990-suzuki-caribian-4wd-jeep-plant-hunter-87140.html

And of course, our resident killer-dog owner, Cool Blue, is trying to get rid of his new tires. Maybe he is going to "retire"? He says his dog doesn't bite but the tires do.

  15. You know....I have seen that cow. Just the other day I was driving around and there it was....right in the middle of the road! I can't remember if I had to steer to the left, or moooove to the right. Darndest traffic conundrum I ever did see. ett

uh, oh!! Humor alert! Prepare to be pounced upon. If you can't keep this thing in serious Wikipedia format, we'll have to corral you and you'll be branded for life. We have herd of your kind, trying to horn in on the input here. That's bull, man.

  16. Indeed, don't listen to anyone on the forum except for TB, the resident expert on everything. The fact that the CR hospital has a had an influx of people seeking treatment for respiratory issues, the same as every year during the smoke season, doesn't enter into it. The fact that if you look at any of the mountains in the distance and see a thick, blue haze, any time during the day, doesn't enter into it. The fact that almost anywhere in CR you wish to go and will have to park from one to four blocks away doesn't enter into it. The fact that there are numerous day tours offered with transportation and guides and drivers who know exactly where they are going doesn't enter into it. The fact that some posters here enjoy a little bit of fun and a different writing style while helping out others does not enter into it. The fact that other posters here have different opinions doesn't enter into it. Please ignore all posts except those made by TB, who has indicated that, yes indeed, his is the only information worth considering. I'm not sure why they call it the Chiang Rai forum. It is obvious that the name should be the TB Dictation Platform. I'll send a quick PM to George and see if we can get it renamed. But first, I'll probably sit in a bar until closing time and then start typing at three in the morning, just to make sure all of my thoughts and accusations are well-founded. I'm pretty sure if I lubricate my brain really well, my thoughts and high opinion of myself will be validated. Seems to work well for someone else.

However, if you DO decide to listen to others, let me know when you're due to arrive. I can give you the quick tour and help you to get settled and identify some of the key landmarks and businesses here that may make your stay a little less confusing. I do generally get off my bar stool and actually help people when they ask. And we have a few others who do the same.

  17. This area is a tourist destination of choice for many Thais. There is lots to see in the area. I haven't seen much of it so I can't recommend much. I don't look at the sights; I stay home. But it is out there. A bazillion tourists during the winter months can't be wrong. Maybe someone else can list something.

  18. Concerning places to stay,

    http://www.thaivisa....-in-chiang-rai/

    http://www.thaivisa....ary-chaing-rai/

and lots more threads, found with a quick search.

There is a place near the old airport that is 650 a night for one night, 600 a night for extended stays, new, nice place, free breakfast, wi-fi in rooms and a covered car park adjoining your room if you have wheels while you're here. If you need specifics on that one, let me know. Not really walking distance from the night bazaar for most people but away from all the noise in town, unless there is a festival going on at the old airport. At the moment, I think the airport is without a festival and the accompanying bands. You would also be near the city golf course, with Barry's restaurant close at hand.

  19. Not sure that they have them but one of the more likely places would be the electrical/sound shop near Pizza Company. As you're facing Pizza Company, it is to the left, one or two businesses down the street. They have a fair assortment of hard to find electrical items. I would be surprised if they don't have them.

If the Pizza Company thing sounds too cryptic, let me know.

  20. Some things change, some don't. Maybe just the faces change. For all the bitchin' about the newbie chatterboxes who have taken over the forum, it seems that the originals outdid the newbies. I guess the originals just forgot.

Some other things have changed. Some others haven't. I'll have to read this thread again in a hundred years and see what else is new.
