Doppa - I see David Cameron is considering a temporary withdrawal from the European human rights convention in order to finally remove Abu Qatada from Britain........what's the reaction there?
Couldn't he "catch rabies" or something. Save a lot of hassle
Not referring to Cameron....
Or are the times of "Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?" over in PC UK?

Does anyone celebrate Songkran along the "black canal" east of the old city?

Rain
in Chiang Mai
All hot air as far as we're concerned in the city - it's done this three times in the last week. The sky is brightening as I type.
It's teasing us.
You're right it's teasing me for sure, not a drop at Saraphi but there is hope, more thunder clouds on their way. At least the heat is blowed away for a while and no polution anymore.
unless your neighbours are having a "well, the smog's gone, it's ok to burn again" burning frenzy

Obviously then, the active noise cancelling headphones are a 'must have' here, and probably cheap at twice the cost if you're staying in a place where anything and any noise goes.
It is really very surprising how tolerant people here are of some bar blasting away until all hours, especially when the bar is surrounded by a residential neighborhood filled with decidedly upscale housing. It is not only surprising but actually incredible.
Yep, build the houses, then the noisy bars arrive

I love the way UK NHS, free for everyone, is compared with & is expected to compete with expensive private hospital service in Thailand. How about comparing with free govt hospitals here

Not only does low frequency sound travel long range, but the human ear has difficulty with the localization of bass sounds, we are not whales after all, and our ears are not spaced so far apart. So one always finds it difficult to tell for sure if the ultra-low base we hear is coming from the building next door or from some bar on the next street. Sometimes, it really does become quite irritating.
That's true I know when I listen to the radio with a headset the sound of thunder gets right through. I used a Bose noise cancelling headset about 5 feet aft of a 300hp airplane motor for years and it was so spooky quiet I had to switch it off sometimes just to reassure myself it was still lit. However I understand that listening to Bach through a headset isn't quite the same, although sometimes with the psychedelic genre it can be quite interesting...
Is a 300hp motor the same kind of low frequency as the really heavy bass you get from the sound systems folk love over here? That's a real question, not a personal attack.
And what can be done to counter it. Personally, I'd rather not spend my evenings with headphones on. Would sheets of rubber over the windows facing the noise help? Anyone tried this? I don't get this problem every night, but it is a problem sometimes. The bass is coming across the rice fields, possibly 2 km or more away. Annoying when yo want to watch a drama on TV.

Most farangs here dont have any respect for anyone. Many i feel have done some pretty horrible things in the past and consequently have lost respect for themselves, no amount of helping in the community or donating to temples is going to change that. When you have been a terrible father, beaten women, lied your whole life and generally been a low life piece of sh** all your life... its simply too late for you! So your only choice is alcoholism, gossiping, trying to steal energy from other people. General jealousy, rudeness and thuggery.
Can we have some evidence to back up all this
verbalwritten diarrhea, or is this autobiographical? -

I think I'd prefer waiting for a UK ambulance in an emergency than one here
I've seen recent examples of CM Ram ambulances doing an outstanding job of getting from there to here and back again in super quick time, I wouldn't dimsiss the Thai hospital/ambulance system too quickly.
Depends where you live. And on traffic. The post was in response to criticism of UK ambulance service. Thai traffic generally doesn't respond to emergency vehicles. In the UK EVERYONE gets out of the way.

If the purpose is to show content that no one wants to watch, then they may as well take them down.
And they shouldn't show commercials on TV, put ads in magazines, place billboards on the side of the road, or even have banner ads on ThaiVisa.. These are nothing more than digital billboards. Their primary purpose is advertising plain and simple, not providing free TV.

Video ads by the road are distracting to drivers. Drivers / riders here are bad enough already. May cause more accidents than we have already in CM. The other ads you talk about are irrelevant. Bye

i had to make an appointment on line to see my doctor, ringing is a premium rate number, made on the 15th appointment on the 25th. no call out casualty/ambulance for anything urgent.
yes a cold start to the year, roll on retirement
You mean you can't dial 999 for an emergency ambulance crew?
Of course you can!... more scare mongering.
And you can die waiting.......

Have they got toughened glass in front? Or will a brick render them useless?

Will they be showing the footie?
Hopefully not.
When they show soccer on the big screens at Siam TV and Niyom Panich, it causes a big traffic disruption. People rapidly slowing down to see the score.. Cars stopping and blocking lanes of traffic to watch the match from the road.... Etc.

The sale of goat's cheese would be a great idea. Maybe it's still maturing? Similar for serving goat meat - they may have to wait until they have a sustainable herd.

Wow. I remember way back in Drivers Ed Class, they always taught us to make sure nothing behind us before backing up. Imagine if it was a small child walking/ standing back there. You should have your license revoked immediately!
Also, you were sitting in the damn car with the engine! Surely you saw someone drive up and park immediately behind you.
Pretty dumb parking m/c so close behind a truck with engine running. Driver might've already checked behind his truck & seen the "all clear".

My sympathies. Short of moving to a quiet location perhaps a noise cancelling headset? This is one of the many reasons I have always preferred to live out of earshot from the nearest neighbor.
Unfortunately, bass travels long distances - kms not just meters
-
Have some reverse sensors fitted.
Dumb place to park a m/c.

I asked laborers coming from that lot where construction is on-going and was informed that it was Home Pro.
Once Home Pro opens & is fully staffed, there wont be any unemployment in the province

I do hope the High Speed Trains have sealed windows. Wouldn't like to be hit by a bag of garbage traveling at 250 kph

Just remember, Doppa, all those scowls you get in UK are genuine, unlike a lot of the smiles here

Good to hear from you again Doppa. Hopefully, things will get better as the weather improves - rural Northumberland in the worst winter in 50 years, what a welcome!!!
UK is over regulated. Thailand is totally un-regulated. You should've stopped off in Cyprus on the way home to acclimatize

Best not to live in a village. That way you don't have to worry about all that "socializing" cr@p.

Burning season where I live is end October through to end June. Kicked off again in the last few days once the smog cleared. Those that didn't plant a dry season rice crop are
preparingburning their fields that have become overgrown in the dry season. Lazy farming, pure & simple.
