Another cheap Charlie ?????
It's not about being a cheap charlie, it's the fact that you need to have a pound coin (refundable) to use a baggage trolley when arriving at an international airport, most likely without any local currency. But, in case there are cheap charlies arriving at MAN, there's a big sign as you enter the baggage reclaim hall offering a free chlamydia check

The more tour buses in the ditch, the safer the roads will be for the rest of us

re .. The season of poor quality air is approaching
is it ?
Yes it is. Thanks for 5 pictures of burning outside the Chiang Mai valley. Much more burning within the valley. At the moment skies are pretty clear here too, apart from Friday & Saturday. Btw, pm10 stats for Friday were 25 to 30% higher than Thursday in CM. A few smoking fires might not look much, but the pollution will build up progressively. Pollution doesn't escape the valley. It's not really started yet. Also, safety threshold levels in EU for pm10 is 50, Thailand chooses 120 so as not to cause alarm.......
-
The readings for the air pollution were less today than a year ago. http://www.pcd.go.th...m?task=findsite Maybe that is why I can see Doi Suthep from Doi Saket some 25 KM.
I can see Doi Suthep too, but not clearly like the last month, up to & including yesterday. Today, there has been a change. I was at Big C, Hang Dong at 3pm. The view was lousy. The view from SK at 5pm was lousy too. What readings are you looking at for pollution? I thought they were delayed a day? Yesterday was very clear.
-
IMHO today seemed to be the worst day for a long time, air quality & visibility wise. Didn't notice anything different this morning, but afternoon, drove from San Kamphaeng over to Hang Dong, & couldn't believe how murky it looked. Seemed like a brown haze hanging over the valley. Last few weeks have been very clear. Did notice that the wind was blowing from the north, so maybe that explains the change.

Could the "food market" in the original post, mean "food centre", as in those coupon places in supermarkets & malls? Don't some of those serve sushi?
-
Rent a car - will give you a lot more freedom to make more of a tour, stopping off when & where you like. And if you get bored of touring you can always see how close to the US consul you can park

I don't recall prices dropping when oil prices dropped from their highs a couple of years or so ago...

Amazing how little interest or response this post has attracted. I guess nobody here eats vegetables.

So are you accusing the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre near Lampang of cruelty to Elephants? That seems to be the place where Elephant painting originated in Thailand. They also put on a show for visitors. It was my understanding that this centre was for the benefit of elephants. They also have a hospital for elephants there. OP, who are you quoting? Please be a bit more specific as to who is being cruel to elephants & who is looking after the elephants. You appear to be tarring all with the same brush......

I recently went back to the waterfall at Mae Kampong and found that it's been defaced by a dozen Flight of the Gibbon signs. Bright yellow, more than a metre square, all containing really helpful messages like "Danger Waterfall Ahead" (you don't say) with the company name featured prominently.
It's disgusting, cynical behaviour from them. I actually wonder if this is just the thin end of the wedge, if they're planning on being even more 'helpful' up there, to the detriment of the average joe who just wants to spend some time at a waterfall.
I was up there last month & couldn't believe it. The signs are huge & spoil the whole nature experience. Mysteriously, as I descended 2 or 3 managed to "fall down"......
IMHO Mae Kampong has gone downhill since FoG arrived. A lot of new building taking place, expensive coffee shops & homestays. Very nearly had a head on collision with VIP minibus speeding up the twisting road, with police escort, expecting everyone to get out of the way - except on blind bends you don't know they're coming
So much for "eco tourism". Before FoG very little happening at Mae Kampong. Now it's changing.

The "Prego" sauces in jars are ok for a quick pasta lunch, 128bt for 666g jar at Makro. The tinned ones don't seem to taste the same.
-
Saw one just like that yesterday at Makro, Hangdong Rd, upstairs, leftside. Otherwise, try Index Living Mall, next to Carrefour on Superhighway.

Thanks for the replies. I'd forgotten about the shop at the back of KSK. Will check him out if I can't find an authorised service agent here that can fix here. Been googling & it looks like Amorn & Siam TV are Kenwood agents. Hopefully they can do something with my 17 year old , but great sounding system.
-
My Kenwood system has just died on me. I'm gutted. Anyone know where to have it repaired here in CM? Had it repaired about 9 yrs ago at "Niyom Panich" nr the airport, but they had to send it to Bangkok, & it took forever. Is there a Kenwood service agent here now?
Also, anyone rcommend a good shop to buy a reasonable amp to fill in, in the meantime. Can't live without a sound system

What are the chances of the reformed Specials ( sans Jerry Dammers) headlining on the 3rd night?

I was more thinking of how many kilometers south or even a bit east of the city of chiang mai, not in another part of the country
Don't come east of the city. That's where all the burning of rice fields is going on right now!! Cough, cough
-
In short where are they going to get a customer base large enough to support a Mall with out a little support from the non driving residents and in the tourist season tourist's.
I know for a fact that the tourist's go to the airport mall. I meet many of them on the free shuttle.
From the people who live out of town. Have you tried to drive near Airport plaza or KSK around peak shopping times? Who cares about tourist arriving by shuttlebus? They'll get their customers from the majority of residents who visit malls, BY CAR. Location on east side of city is great for me. My only concern is the outdoor stage for entertainment. 6.7km straight line across the rice fields, I think the neighbourhood has taken a downturn......

and then there's that 'Chiang Mai Feel the Bass' month-long festival from....3rd Jan I think it was....
I thought the "feel the bass" festival was year round
Only on Pattaya Walking Street
No, it's pretty much EVERYWHERE in Thailand, year round.......
We live out in the ricefields south of San Kamphaeng. Nothing for at least 1km, but the bass just comes from somewhere...........
-
Checkout the sports section in either Airport Plaza (Robinsons) or KSK (Central) - saw Hitec hiking boots, cheapest about 1600bt.

ME thinks the OP was taking the p!ss of the thread about the loud music nr Nimmenhymen?

Tractor Tires
in Chiang Mai
Posted
Try Deestone tyres, made in Thailand. I ordered lawn tractor tyres through a local tyre shop. I see on their website they manufacture tractor tyres.
