  1. Whatever you drink, always check the production date on the bottle or case.  Mom & Pop stores here often sell "vintage" beers, especially if not the local's favourites.  Chang should usually be fresh, but anything else can be 6 months or older :bah: .  I prefer Chiang Light.  In a hot country, I like to drink quantity, & most brews, I find too strong.  My top three : Chang Light, 4.2%, Federbrau 4.7%(?), Chang Draught 5%.  Leo tastes like homebrew imho.  Cheers Extra is my favourite taste, "nearest" to an English ale, but not really the same.

  2. The Amorn shop in the BigC mall on Hang Dong Road had several different solar panels on display last time I was there.

I saw those last week.  One panel for 40W was 3500 baht, if I remember correctly.

  3. 9cm rise at Narawat bridge between 10am & 11am according to the hydro website. And the level is still rising upstream.

And a big increase in discharge volume.

  4. My interpretation of the chart photographed by Greenside (page 5 this thread), is that a depth of 4m at San Sai, results in 3.7m at Narawat Bridge, 6 - 7 hrs later.  Highest, latest reading at San Sai is 3.35m, so still a fair way to go.

  5. Don'tcha just love the dedication that some of these govt or hydro reporting site show to their profession.....

Here we are in very possibly pre flood times with the river coming up, and with a trememdous amount of rain in the area yesterday and last night, if its time to go home, its time to go home.....

To many locals show this trait...... lack of pride and dedication  in their job and/or the work they do...... do just enough..... do only what you have to..... but make sure someone sees you so you get the image of realllllll y  working.   Image over substance...

I can see not making the hourly reports in non threatening times, but not when things are so critical.....

    BAD SHOWING SLACKERS

well anyhow got that off my chest.

Looks like they're working overtime tonight.  Latest reading 3m at 10pm.  Have you had a word, or are they monitoring us, as we monitor them?

  6. Sounds great. I am located in the "the boons". How fast is it for download/uploads?

    Thanks

CAT CDMA 3MB over the mobile phone network

cost 6,500bht for USB dongle (3 month access included, subject to promotion), then 790bht a month

It's fast, it works, and you can take it with you ..... no long term contract required.

You can also buy a wired/wireless router that the dongle can plug into if you want to distribute around a house.

CAT office on other side of road to Carrefour on the superhighway

Pantrip Plaza shop 3 doors from Bangkok bank will let you try before you buy for a few days.

If you go to the Pantip CAT CDMA shop you can show them your house location on Google Earth, & they'll show you the nearest CAT masts.  The main CAT office is opposite Big C on the superhwy, not Carrefour, but here they can't help you about mast location.  The pantip shop is a dealer, & will rent the "router" for 300bt per day to test the signal.

I agree with you Mr G

Perhaps you could volunteer to do the night shift  :)

  8. If the rest of the Kuang catchment got what we received in the last hour, then there's problems on the way.  The irrigation canals in the fields, have not gone down since Sunday nights storm.  The Kuang river is still at its highest (within 4cm).  Where does the latest downpour go?  6 hrs of pumping out my fishpond yesterday, refilled in 1 hr, about 20cm worth  :(

South of San Kamphaeng , the Kuang was less than 1 m from the banks, before this latest storm.

  9. I thank we have a serious descripance. 5.69 M at Sk.  4.9 M at Lampang and 2.43 M at Narawat Noon today.

I presume these measurements are depths of the rivers. San Kamphaeng & Narawat br are on different rivers.   Also, surely, quite natural for the depth to vary along a river, as the width of the channel varies? Am I missing something?

You get an A Plus for the test.:D

I'll be happy not to get flooded.

  11. The scanned image I bought was supplied as a 38.1 MB tif file. Dimensions 5648 by 6891 with just 8 bit depth for colors. Just checked and it appears to be completely uncompressed, not using any compression at all.

How does the detail & text look in the original tif file?  If that is good, maybe your problem occurs when you save as jpeg?  Can you post a sample saved in the original tif format, without any compression?

  12. Have you bought one of the scanned images?  It's been a while since I did any scanning, but I would have thought 240dpi was good enough for printing a paper copy, let alone viewing on a handheld gps.  Do you know if it's possible to buy the scanned copies online?

    Hi ?Mark?,ermm.gif

I bought the scanned image of the map of Chiang Mai and the Pui / Suthep National Park 4746 I.

Actually the only problem I have is the Thai script on the map is very difficult to read. The Thai names of villages and other places are in a smaller font than the English names. They are mostly legible if you strain your eyes. But would be nice if I could zoom in to read the names. Have learned to read Thai and reading the names in Thai and getting the pronunciation right I think is a lot easier than try to guess at the pronunciation when the word is written in English. Also would be nice if the map image was crisper and less blurred at high zoom levels. Have a nice GPS set up on my Nokia N97 smart phone which has a big color touch screen.

Am a very dedicated hiker and will continue my search to be able to scan at a higher resolution, although the images from the RTSD would be usable for my purposes as well. Have an A4 scanner at home and scanned a portion of a map at 600 dpi and they looked great!

Really I don't know why the RTSD is not able to create images directly from their mapping software at high resolution rather than printing and then scanning the result which seems ass backwards to me.

I do not know if the maps are available online. When searching for the contact info for the RTSD this time around though I did come across an ecommerce site offering maps for sale, possibly the RTSD's own site. Have not found it since and the whole RTSD web site was down for some time but just recently seems to have reappeared.

How does the sample map jpeg on your website compare with the one you bought.  Looks pretty washed out & compressed.  What kind of file did you buy & how large?  I would like to buy one for San Kampheang area, but not if it's so compressed.

  13. Can you tell me a bit more about these media player devices that you mention? i.e. where to buy, rough cost, and restrictions (if any).

I've seen the WD TV device for sale in Icon Plaza, don't know the price, mine came over from UK. There's a 5 page thread on playing usb movies on tv here

  14. Those cheaper model usb dvd players suffer a lot from stutter if the video bitrate is high, & also don't play all the different avi types out there on the www.  I have a wd tv media player - plays everything I plugged into it so far, including HD content.

"I don't really want one of those media player devices though because i like to kick back in the lounge and watch stuff on big TV"

I don't understand this comment.  The media player is smaller than a dvd player, & plugs into your tv set in the lounge.  You copy movies etc onto a usb stick & plug this into the media player.
