  1. The OP says "I have my main priority my daughter and her future is of utmost importance to me".

Stay in UK, until she finishes schooling.  You're still young, CM can wait.  You have a job in UK, there's a global recession on, Thailand is getting more & more expensive , & exchange rates may still be heading south.

Raising kids here.  We have 2 young boys, & the amazingly timed long school holidays here coincide with pollution season & very hot season.  Confined to house most of the day. :)

  2. The ceiling extractor fans I use have a hinged flap that closes off the exhaust when switched off.  The exhaust is at a right angle to the fan, ie horizontal outflow of air drawn vertically through the ceiling.  Closing of the exhaust should prevent dust or warm air entering the living space from the roof space.

  3. Even the cartoon does not make any sense....

...people running after they look at their phone and I assume read that there might be a tsunami headed their way.... one person says "What's going on?" The other person says "I dunno, low bat." What the heck is that suppose to mean? What does low bat have to do with a tsunami sms warning?

wasn't there a report last year about the tsunami detection buoy for Thailand having a dead battery?

  4. There was a large number of police, gathered at the Lamphun police station at noon today.  All smartly dressed, with black baseball style hats on.  They were just hanging around, waiting.  Probably nothing to do with the red shirts, but did look odd to see so many.

  5. If the standard TRUE digital signal is anything to go by, I would not hold my breath................

I thought the standard signal was for viewing on True mobile phones  :)

  6. We've got a 12m tower with 2000 lt tank, franklin submersible pump.  Pressure is great to 2 storey house.  Also irrigates 3 rai garden.  No idea what the pressure is, but sprinklers 90m from the tower are fine.  We have 1.5" pipe from the water tower to the house (about 25m), which down sizes to 1" up to the 2nd floor.  Also run a 2" pipe the length of the garden to feed the irrigation system.  The 2" pipe reduces pressure loss from friction.  At ground level, the pressure from that 2" pipe, 90m from the tower is high.  If I connect a 1.5" hose, it's like being a fireman  :)

I've never looked into the maths, I just know I get a lot of pressure.

  7. You only need power at the pump and that can be next to your house (unless you are talking a really long distance) - don't fool around with underground power runs.

Never had a problem with underground power runs - use the PE pipe, flexible pipe various diameters available, comes in 100m rolls.  Use it to bring the power to my house, back out to the pump & around the 3 rai garden for lighting & external power points.  And we've been through a couple of floods.  Also used for telephone line.

  8. [

Not exactly an allotment or gardeners pass time, is it?

Still, 2 - 3 rai is only "small potato", hardly a commercial farm.  Oops, sorry, the OP is talking tomatoes, not potatoes  :)

  9. During my 10 year stay in Chiang Mai, I crossed paths 3 times with those volunteers. Not one time I was happy with it. On the contrary; every time a very sad and bad feeling. Especially from a 35/40 year old French volunteer; he is no less than a cr***. Twice I was with a friend, the other time with my wife. Every time a real shock for all of us.

I am probably being slow, but can you give me a clue as to what 'cr***' may be? Tried Google, got nothing.

    Iain

Had me baffled for a while, & I like to do crosswords  :)

Possibly "crook" but didn't want to be accused of libel?

  10. Me thinks you're reading too much into the "hacked" branches tossed back over the lawn.  That's how people "prune" trees here, with a machete.  Even "gardeners" do it.  Maybe proper gardeners who work with trees don't, but the majority of folk do.  And why shouldn't they pass the cuttings back to you to deal with.  Keep those trees trimmed in future  :) .

And DO NOT ESCALATE this problem  :D

  11. A Home Pro fork'll set you back about 800.

800?  not sure I paid that much, most unlike me :)  Maybe prices have gone up.  Typical Thailand, baht strengthens, driving up the prices of imported goods.  Figure that one out!!

  12. I like the early furit, the one s that are pink and greenish colour, they are a bit sour and have a flowery taste. If durian is the king of fruit, mango the queen, pineapple the prince, banana the court jester, what is lychee?

"Emperor" - that's what they call the larger fleshier ones  :)

  13. in fact, if you're wife's land IS high elevation....... would she like to lease/rent/sell a small portion?? Pm me if she would.....

    Thanks

Count me in, too, for the hot season mountain commune  :)

  14. It's quite surprising that modern homes here don't have louvred wooden shutters on windows that receive direct sunlight.  Close during the heat of the day to keep the glass cooler & hopefully the room too.  My computer room has a 2m wide picture window & in the afternoon gets quite warm.  The double walls feel cool on the inside, but the slatted blinds on the inside aren't enough to keep the room cool, so it must be the sun on the glass.  Have today fitted a cheap wooden roll blind (as sold on Chiang Moi rd rattan shops) on the outside to keep the window shaded.  This afternoon will find out how effective it is.  Unless it rains again :)

  15.  i suppose it wouldnt cost me that much to cement a ridge of bricks all along the channel... will ask the hill tribe mooban man for a quote!!

or you could lay all those bamboo poles you've bought to make a retaining wall next to the channel :)

better still, a quick & labour free way would be to lay concrete fence poles along the edge of the channel - get the cheapest with least amount of rebar inside...   should cost you about 50bt per metre?  can take them with you when you move :D

  16.  YES!! rain finally reaches us :D Just hope it will clear off now, cos the satellite tv has gone & the (once) mighty Liverpool kick off in 35 mins  :)

  17. Do you think its possible to have a huge great 'wick' into a borehole... and by capillary action the water could collect above ground?

Im trying to think of an 'eco' way of watering my garden all year round...

solar pump?  will cost you, me thinks.  or rig up a pump powered by exercise bicycle :)
