American Tourist Found Dead in Phuket Hotel Room

A 50-year-old American tourist was found dead inside a room at a hotel in Phuket late on 31 May 2026, prompting a police investigation and forensic examination.

Police were alerted at 11.30pm on 31 May after staff at a hotel in Ratsada, Mueang Phuket district, reported the discovery of a deceased foreign guest. Officers from Mueang Phuket Police Station, led by Pol Lt Urassaya Daengtako, attended the scene along with relevant authorities.

The deceased was later identified as Daniel Martin White, aged 50, a United States national. He was found seated inside the room with an iron cord tied around his neck and attached to a wardrobe. Initial findings suggested he may have taken his own life.

According to the preliminary investigation, the hotel’s Director was informed at around 11.00pm that reception staff had been unable to contact the guest for approximately 24 hours. Concerned by the lack of response, hotel management arranged for maintenance staff to open the room for a welfare check.

Upon entering, staff discovered the man unresponsive inside the room and immediately notified authorities. Police secured the scene and began gathering evidence.

A forensic examination was carried out at the hotel by Dr Tulwich Wannasri, a forensic physician from Vachira Phuket Hospital, together with investigating officers. Initial assessments indicated that the man had likely been dead for between eight and 12 hours before being found.

Investigators documented the scene, photographed evidence and prepared a site plan as part of the legal process. No further details regarding the circumstances leading up to the death were released.

Authorities are continuing their investigation in line with legal procedures and have not yet ruled out any possibility. Police are coordinating with the deceased’s relatives, embassy and relevant officials regarding the next steps.

I think the evidence would lean towards suicide. Unfortunate for all. My thought go to his family, friends and also the person who discovered the body. That must have been a really disturbing event.

I wonder why people travel overseas to suicide. Maybe to avoid being thwarted in their attempt or found by loved ones if successful. Still, it's very inconvenient for the family to make overseas funeral arrangements or arrange for the body to be flown back etc. etc. I guess it makes the suicide seem less personal.

The family can choose to let the Thai authorities handle it locally in a Thai tempel and have the ashes sent back or leave it here. I have been involved in sending two complete bodies back to their home countries. It's complicated and expensive.

Very unfortunate but what can you do when tourists come to Thailand which is supposed a time to relax and enjoy what Thailand has to offer

And they take their lives for what ever reason RIP

How long had he been in Thailand?? This may throw some light on why he committed suicide; such as a "romance" gone wrong, for example?

Could be many reasons.

Could have problems in Home Country think they can leave those problems behind.

Some don't want to off themselves and Thailand has enough positives that giving it a chance to lift you out of depression is worth a shot.

Money, Relationship and/or Health problems.

If you are anyone you know is experiencing depression seek help as soon as possible. In my experience you can pull yourself out of it sometimes before it gets to bad.

People go where they like things. Coming here might be a last fling with easy women before they make their last decision. They might be on the edge for a long time and a woman might have them go over the edge, especially a pretty one that tells them to get lost after the first encounter. They saw Thailand wasn't the paradise they heard about.

They might be close and see a vacation as that last thing. Beaches, women, food, drinking and partying etc.

Yes, being away from loved ones and alone might have them make that decision easier, with no one trying to talk them out of it, even though that is a hard thing to do anyway unless they understand they need help and want to seek it. A lot "jump"from balconies here, and some have been suicides, and it could have been a combination of alcohol, losing that last inhibition, and a loss of some kind, or depression that finally went too far.

Perhaps the thought of going back is too much for some. However we still don't know this guy's cause of death. 50. Could easily have been natural causes.

Whoops. Just seen the bit about the cord etc.

Being found with an iron cord around your neck is never a good thing. It certainly sounds like suicide. Though I can certainly understand the level of desperation that could compel somebody to do that, I guess they're at a point where they're not taking into account the reaction of their friends and loved ones.

I have a friend whose brother took his own life 20 years ago and he and his mother are still deeply affected by it. I have a friend who took his own life well over a decade ago, and I've never forgotten him nor that act of desperation.

Why is it that all here assume and believe it was suicide based on,"He was found seated inside the room with an iron cord tied around his neck and attached to a wardrobe. Initial findings suggested he may have taken his own life"

I am not a forensic expert BUT could this statement also it indicate it was murder.

After all most people do it by standing on a chair and tying a rope to the beam above them or a doorway frame and kicking the chair away, I emphasise rope not a metal cord. A metal cord us usually used by a killer so it digs deep into the neck and severs the vital breathing canal. Plus is extremely hard for the victim to dislodge such a metal cord once pulled by murderer's strength from behind the victim. I would call this death an open case till they at least research his background. He may be a drug dealer victim from a deal gone wrong?

The cord was not "metal" and it has been said that it was the cord from an iron, hence "iron cord".

“Why is it that all here assume and believe it was suicide based on”

What do you mean “all”? You could say most, many, a lot etc. All is inaccurate because you don’t speak for everybody.

Iron cord = cord from an iron

If it's an area near the Rassada pier, it's probably the lowest end district in Phuket. Crime and super cheap housing and hotels. I use to ride my moto through there getting to the pier to catch boats to outer islands.

Speculation: no money, no hope, depression. Very sad. RIP Kuhn Daniel

David Carradine also. Forensics can tell investigating this whether it was an accident, intentional or murder.
