Anti-Israel protests in Bangkok fuel concern over Israelis

Two anti-Israel protests have been held outside the Israeli embassy in Bangkok over the past two weeks, drawing groups with sharply different motivations, according to an analysis by Khaosod English senior staff writer Pravit Rojanaphruk.

Pravit said concern over Israeli conduct in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and Iran had converged with suspicion towards what some Thai critics call "grey Israeli" visitors and expatriates. The term is used by critics alleging disrespectful behaviour, opaque business dealings or attempts to gain excessive economic influence.

He said some Thais fear Israelis could become entrenched in property, tourism and other businesses, or undermine Thai sovereignty. These are perceptions held by some protesters, rather than findings yet established.

Different groups, common protest

Pravit described two strands among demonstrators: Thai ultranationalists focused on alleged "grey Israeli" activity, and others whose objections centre on Israel's military actions and treatment of Palestinians.

He cited claims that Israeli expatriates, including some who have acquired Thai citizenship, are involved in building a large Chabad House in central Bangkok, expanding cemeteries and operating businesses in Phuket. Critics quoted in the analysis argue that Israeli interests are effectively behind accommodation, transport, restaurant and tour businesses in some areas, with limited benefit for local people.

The analysis linked the mood partly to high-profile cases involving Israeli tourists accused of brash or culturally insensitive behaviour. It also placed the protests in the context of Thai economic stagnation, xenophobia and a history of concerns about foreign influence.

Gaza and West Bank concerns

Pravit also pointed to international reporting on the Gaza war and violence in the occupied West Bank as a major factor shaping opinion.

He noted that the UK government had warned Israel over tenders for more than 1,200 housing units in the E1 area near Jerusalem, which Britain considers a "red line". The UK has said settlement expansion could fragment the West Bank and weaken prospects for a contiguous Palestinian state and a two-state solution.

According to the analysis, Britain is considering restrictions on goods and services from West Bank settlements and limits on British firms financing, supporting or advertising settlement projects. Israel has warned that unilateral British sanctions could harm diplomatic ties, and has threatened retaliation. Israel denies the allegations and has closed the British consulate in Jerusalem.

Pravit also cited a Channel 4 News report saying the UN had recorded nearly 2,000 Palestinians injured by Israeli forces or settlers this year, with 85 killed, while three Israelis had been killed.

Potential diplomatic impact

The Thai-Cambodian conflict had also heightened fears of outside threats. Veteran activist and former Yellow Shirt leader Sondhi Limthongkul, who co-led anti-Cambodia protests last year that attracted about 10,000 people, led Thursday's anti-Israel rally, attended by an estimated 300 to 400 demonstrators.

Pravit said a larger mobilisation in coming weeks could prompt the Thai government to try to appease protesters, potentially affecting Thai-Israeli relations. He added that Israel's ambassador to Thailand, Alona Fisher-Kamm, would play an important role in handling the issue.

If needed of course.

If you follow the news, you would understand that such protection is needed for Jews.

Don't be disingenous.

You can see the influence of the media. Also Israel employs a lot of Thais and this may now change.

A good point. As far as I'm aware, Thai workers in Israel are doing so legally, whereas the media suggests some Israelis here are not.

Thailand is an overwhelmingly tolerant and peaceful country.
If Jews did something to make Thais dislike them and want to kick them out en masse then I guarantee you

it is warranted and has nothing to do with religion.

That's YOUR hang up. Not theirs.

Jews are a people. Not only a religion.

Yeah I get it you want Thailand to expel the Jews, Spanish Inquisition style.

Thailand is not going to do that.

Thailand is not an Islamic country.

May I suggest for you Malaysia a very nice nearby Judenfrei country.

You can even buy fresh copies of Mein Kempf there at popular bookstores.

What is disingenuous regarding a statement of very clear fact?

I think the following OED definition applies to your statement!

disingenuous

NOUN adjective not sincere, especially in pretending that one knows less about something than one really does.

Not forgetting Arab street in Phuket , not just a street, an area dominated by Arabs .

Yet, 1 Israeli chabad house is considered to be an "invasion"

"Arab Street" in Phuket refers to the vibrant cluster of Middle Eastern restaurants, shisha lounges, halal eateries, and Arabic signage located around Soi Sansabai and Rat Uthit Song Roi Pi Road near Patong Beach

Yeah Pattaya and Bangkok have similar large clustiers.

Nobody complains.

They're great places to go for good Middle Eastern food.

What Thailand will probably do is to enforce violations of Israeli based businesses and land deals which is fine as long as they don't single out only Israelis, which I don't think they well.

As far as bans, the worse they might do which is still very doubtful is to reduce entry time for Israelis temporarily.
There will never be a full ban.

Sounds like the "Little Arabia" opposite and beyond the Marine Bar on the south end of Pattaya's Walking Street, way back when I was a reprobate. I believe "Little India" has conquered the area now?

There's also the middle eastern enclave on the north side of the arse-end of Sukhumvit, around Soi 3 and the Grace Hotel. Not sure if the "souk" is as vibrant as it used to be though.

Today, I read that the Israeli "influence" on Samui is significant whereas it wasn't on the radar before. Pretty sure it's what passes for mainstream media here just fanning a guttering flame. Oh, and Sondhi flapping his yap as well.

Risky move to make .

Netanyahu could revoke the visas of the 60 000 Thais working in Israel in retaliation

Thing is - and while I am annoyed about the Israelis here too - the fact is you could 'pinpoint' other nationalities on that map. Russian dominance (Pattaya and Phuket) and Chinese dominance in different areas (Chinese in Bangkok around Rama 9 and RCA).

Not to mention that there has been about 50 new Churches opening in Phuket in the last 20 odd years .

1 Chabad opens and some people think its the beginning of an Israeli invasion

If correct, and the protest was outside the Israeli Embassy, then WTF were the RTP up to, allowing it to happen...the protest eas in direct contravention of Thai law.

"Prohibited Locations

The law bans public assemblies entirely in or near certain sensitive zones, including:

  • Parliament, courts, and government offices (within a 50-meter radius)

  • Hospitals, educational institutions, and religious sites

  • Foreign embassies or international organizations " is this allowed to happen to take focus away from government issues, eg senate collusion, the illegal invasion of Cambodia, Anutin's poor performance etc

I expect the Thai Government is concerned about Muslims rioting in the South/Phuket .

Not wanting the unrest in the deep south to spread to Phuket

What a huge crock!

Thais don’t even Go Vote without getting paid.

Thousands of Thais protesting in the streets -because they read something or someone else told them.

Surely thousands wouldn’t have kept quiet, until now, suddenly they hate Jews and hate Israel.

But, considering, how prolific the payoffs are here…I think they may have gotten paid to protest...maybe funded by an adversary. Either way, the protestors gained financially from participating in a protest.

Just like the hundreds and thousands, and many here in this forum. You have no personal experience, only what you read or what someone said. You are just a hater.

"A friend of mine who lives on Koh Phangan, tells me that the island has more or less been taken over by young Israelis, who hang out in small cliques, and monopolize many restaurants and coffee shops."

I stay on Phangan Island, and I've made it known on this forum that I do not like to eat in a restaurant where most of the customers are young Israeli men who (fact!) will be serving IDF, reservist IDF or recently-ex IDF.

I expect a restaurant on this island to have a mixture of foreign tourists (young, retired and families) and expats from different countries, and local Thais - now it's like living in Israel! If I wanted that I would have applied for the Right of Return to Israel.... (I'm apparently 25% Ashkenazi ...) :)

and then who would they get to do the work that Israelis don't want to do? It's the same as Thais stopping Cambodians and Burmese workers in Thailand - creates a big problem for Thailand!

Not really the same. Chabad openly recruit tourist visitors in Israel citing their Chabad houses in Thailand, churches don't do that. Nor does any church have 2 billion USD a year to spend like the Chabad people do.

I didn't claim they are exactly the same .

The 2 billion USD is raised from people attending Chabad's and it goes on running costs , goes towards the expenses of running the Chabads .

Not sure that's the reason. It's more likely because China usually retaliates when its citizen are targeted. Israel has no significant retaliation power over Thailand.
