Australian disputes 32,540 baht Pattaya bar bill

An Australian tourist was taken to Pattaya City Police Station after refusing to pay a 32,540 baht drinks bill at a beer bar in Soi Buakhao, Pattaya.

The dispute followed a drinking session which, staff said, began at about 8am on 12 August and continued for more than 13 hours until around 9pm. Police have recorded the matter and are checking the bar's orders and bill before deciding on further legal steps.

Bar opened early for regular customer

The bar's 46-year-old owner, Khun Meleeya, and staff brought the Australian, identified as 53-year-old Mr Thompson, to Pattaya City Police Station.

Staff told police that Mr Thompson arrived at around 8am, before the premises had opened for business. They said the owner agreed to open specially for him because he had previously visited other bars in the same group and had a good record of paying his bills.

During the day, staff said, he bought drinks for several female employees. He also rang the bell on several occasions to buy drinks for all staff in the bar, resulting in a large number of employees joining him at his table.

The eventual total for the drinks ordered during the session was 32,540 baht, according to the bar.

Refusal followed invitation to bar fine

Later that evening, Mr Thompson became friendly with one female member of staff and invited to bar fine her to go out with him after the bar closed, employees said.

She declined the invitation, after which he became angry and refused to settle the bill for drinks bought for staff throughout the day, according to the bar's account.

Staff said they tried to resolve the matter directly, arguing that the bar had to cover staff wages and the cost of the drinks supplied during the long session. When no agreement was reached, they sought police assistance.

Mr Thompson has disputed the amount claimed, telling officers that the bill was not as high as stated. He has continued to refuse payment, police were told.

For foreign visitors and expatriates in Pattaya, the case is a reminder that buying rounds, ringing the bell and offering staff drinks can quickly build a substantial tab. Anyone ordering drinks for others should ask for the running total and retain itemised bills, particularly during lengthy sessions.

Police checking bar records

Pol Lt Col Kanoknan Suksri, an inquiry officer at Pattaya City Police Station, invited both sides to give statements.

Police have made a daily record of the complaint as evidence and will examine the purchase details and bill, before interviewing both parties again, once Mr Thompson has sobered up, to establish the facts and proceed with legal procedures, if no agreement is made.

This comment reeks of missing knowledge of how Thailand really works.

That a bar has people and can open at any time is not strange at all. many girls working live and sleep in a room backside and sometimes the owner too. You have western thinking and believe that a bar owner goes home to the villa in the suburbs. Really???

Of course, they can and might put extra papers to add to the bill. However, I don´t see the reason here as he was drinking for 13h and got so drunk buying lady drinks and ringing the bell that even a bar girl refused his company! He might very well been drinking beer. Easy, ring the bell on time per hour in general 4 people + 4 lady drinks per time, and that´s low counting. That will be about 1200. After that 5 lady drinks on the side per hour: 1000 baht more. Add to that what he drink, and you will have your 2500.

The only thing here, is that reality is a good lesson for you.

If the bars or entertainment venues ate the real Thai life, i have indeed no clue... But i live in Thailand already more than 20 years in a rural area, and I have a normal life. Not addicted to bars and hostesses, no just an ordinary life and I don't need alcohol or bars to make my life happy as many of people here seems to need.

13 hours, 32,540 baht, multiple rounds for the entire bar… and then the final straw was apparently being told “no” by the girl. 😂

That’s not a bar bill. That’s 13 hours of very expensive emotional investment.

That is why I ask before I buy a drink....saving thousands every year....for my retirement portfolio.

To be rejected by the bar girl- says a lot about the person really?

I'm sure he ran up a really good bill, but I am also sure there was a lot of fluff in that bill too.

Well, if you are starting a complete bender at 8am and call it quits at 9pm, then you certainly have alcohol issues. The bill was probably padded a bit, but it could easily be somewhere close to that figure if he'd been shooting from the hip and ringing the bell a bunch of times. Guess he was bigging-it-up and then reality crashed in at the end... muppet really. He must have had his beer goggles properly on if he was zooming in on the thing in pink.

Ok, yeah I have over 28 years here. Also living far away from all we talk about here. However, that was not the point here. The point seems to be that you posted on something you don´t have a clue about.

Are bars with entertainment licences not permitted to serve alcohol at 8am?

there was no indication in the article that he was as drunk as you suggest, there was confirmation that he had been buying drinks for everyone else all day though.

Do, you have a screw loose? How many guy do you know that are visiting bars sitting 13h buying drinks and stuff for everyone else except themselves? Must be many of your imaginary friends, right? 😂

Your way of trying to move in on many threads, trying to correct every little detail, seems to be fading. You lost your touch Lou. You don´t make sense anymore.

Did I post that bars where permitted to serve alcohol at 8 am? Do you have difficulty reading, man? I wrote what you can see below. If you look carefully, you see that I am talking about losing their license. Do you think I mean it´s permitted then? You know, if you need help understanding before replying, please send me a PM and I will explain everything you don´t understand first.

However, the bar just says they chose to open early just because of the customer. They should face losing their alcohol license and hefty fine. They can´t do like they want!

Once your creditworthiness is being assessed by Pattaya bar owners, you should really have a good look at your life and consider some changes.

Oh, my God! Are you starting to have comprehension malfunctions? I bet you were so hot on the reply trigger, that you only read the first sentence, and then you got so ashamed that you had less years in Thailand. Punched the button, I thought that now I will be quick and sink him down, right?

You totally missed the boat, man! I actually wrote as below in the post you replied to. Do you really think that makes me a person who has the same lifestyle? In that case you must be really dumb!

So.....13 hours of drinking ...and buying a few rounds for others.... and the average for drinks per hour is 2500 Baht. ฿2500 per hour. In the USA that would be $75 an hour. That does not seem unreasonable to me. $75 per hour , where you "rang the bell" several times. Let us guess...that he "rang the bell " once every 2 hours... call it 6 times. Say there were 10 employees and 5 customers...that is 15 people got a drink 6 times. or 75 drinks. a typical drink/beer is 200-300 Baht. Call it 250. 250 times 75=18,750 baht all by itself. So he drank 14,000 baht himself in the 13 hours.... take out a fourth of the time because he bought himself a drink as well in the 13 hours where he bought 6rounds. That leaves..let us say for easy figgerin.... 10 hours of his drinking his own drinks. so 14,000 ÷10= 1400 an hour of drinking. That is $42 an hour . This guy does not have a leg to stand on. If a drink is ฿250 , he had 44 drinks in that 10 hours of time left after accounting for 3 hours of bell ringing where he evidently bought a round for himself. 20 he was drinking a drink every 13-14 minutes or so. 44 drinks in the 10 hours alloted after the bell rings accounted for? He is gonna pay every penny of that bar buill..AN D he is gonna pay a fine for getting the cops involved .... a just punishment for making these guys interrupt their coffee break.

This guy sounds like a bit of a numbskull, without a life. Who comes to a bar at 8:00 a.m. and specifically asks them to open? And why? And who stays in a bar for 13 hours? Specifically someone who does not have a life.

Anytime you ring the bell it's going to be a few thousand baht minimum. It sounds like that bill was accurate, and that he just didn't realize how expensive the experience was going to be, and just wanted to be a big shot for a day.

Beer bars in the day can be very boring.

Can't imagine staying in one for 13 hours.

Day drinking in general can be pretty tedious.

But this guy was clueless as far as the tab is concerned.

Why not just write it off as educational expenses? University would cost him considerably more... and at least this way, the lesson comes with a much cheaper tuition fee. I’m sure he’ll never make that mistake again… considering the tuition has already been paid!

Yes I made a few typos....but the idea is sound. I like doing the math and applying it to a known. LOL.... when this Aussie dildo rang the bell, the word went out...and several girls from standing outside...not even in the bar....got a drink... so did the guy sleeping on the cardboard box in the Soi behind the bar... you get a drink...you get a drink...you get a drink.....lol He thougjht he was Oprah of the Soi. This cracks me up. He probably think he is gonna write a horribl review ... and that people who patronage a place like this is gonna read up on the bar scene before they head out to get some Thai friendliness. lmfao!

Agreed. My time limit for a bar is usually 1 hour, beyond that I feel like my head is going to explode and I'm bored to the point of tears.

They opened specifically for him apparantely, as he was a previous patron who had always settled his bill, (probably quite substantial)....so they saw him as an easy mark. Perhaps he believed, rightly or wrongly, that they were taking the piff on this occasion !
