British Man Assaults Municipal Officers in Chiang Mai

A British man in his 30s was arrested after allegedly attacking municipal enforcement officers at Tha Phae Gate in Chiang Mai on 23 June 2026. The incident occurred at around 10.30am and caused disruption in the city centre before police brought the situation under control.

According to Chiang Mai Provincial Police radio centre, the man, described as tall and heavily built, arrived at the scene on a black big bike motorcycle and approached municipal officers who were carrying out their duties near the inner side of Tha Phae Gate in Mueang district.

Officials said the man shouted abuse at officers and made offensive gestures, including showing his middle finger. Patrol police responding to the incident moved in to contain the situation and initially detained the man.

People close to the man reportedly believed he was experiencing a mental health episode. They told authorities that he appeared to be hearing voices and had a long-standing dislike of people in uniform.

Municipal officers stated that they became concerned the situation was escalating and requested additional support by radio before notifying police. Before officers arrived, the man allegedly became enraged and physically attacked municipal personnel, punching them repeatedly and causing disorder in the area.

Police from Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station and Chiang Mai Tourist Police were called to assist. Working together, officers subdued the man and took him into custody.

The suspect was later transferred to investigators at Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station for legal proceedings. No details were released regarding injuries suffered by the municipal officers involved.

Police also learned that the British national had allegedly been involved in similar confrontations on several previous occasions. However, officers said this was the most serious and violent incident attributed to him so far.

The case remains under investigation, and authorities are expected to proceed with legal action in accordance with Thai law. No further information regarding charges or the man’s identity have been released.

They're not sending their best, are they?

Where have we heard that before?

I am curious what were the underlying causes for such an action by a foreigner. I am not trying to justify his action. Far from it. No one should attack any Government official, more so the foreigners who are the guests in that country.

Get a grip.

  1. We do not read about foreigners attacking Thais in this manner every day.

  2. The incidents are infrequent.

The UK national most likely behaves the same way as he does with such people in his homeland. He will now receive a lesson in the importance of being civil

A man in his 30s with multiple incidents over what must be a lengthy amount of time. How is he remaining in Thailand to wreak this havoc. Authorities need to start releasing the type visas these people are using.

Should be easy to comprehend.

Where did I say that?

Read again.

Of the top 7 arrivals to Thailand, Brits make the most headlines, closely followed by Chinese, and S. Korea, of the top 7 arrivals.

Are these results in your head or is there statistics to back it up?

The pattern is becoming overwhelming. Lots of single young white Euros are getting easy long term access to this country and going on sprees of violence and intimidation. Ought to see if there is any relation to the DTV and this upsurge of criminal behavior.

We actually hear more about locals attacking foreigners, or in a much larger tone, locals attacking locals, with the usual 5 against 1 used for foreigners and locals.

I watch the Thai news every morning, Ch32, Thai on Thai, knives, guns, machetes.

Time to stop being so forgiving towards foreigners who behave badly. Thailand hurts itself by creating the impression foreigners can get away with anything short of a capital offense.

So this guy needs to spend a few weeks in jail while he is being processed, then deported with a lifetime ban!

Which also asks why he was released before and why wasn't this dealt with sooner?

If there is, it will be tied to the Muay Thai visa widely advertised.

Foreign nationals make up approximately 3.4% to 4.8% of Thailand's total prison population, which translates to about 9,300 to 14,500 foreign inmates out of a total prison population of roughly 275,000 to 300,000. Citizens from neighboring Southeast Asian nations make up the vast majority. [1, 2, 3]

The approximate breakdown of foreign inmates in Thai prisons by nationality includes: [1]

  • Myanmar: ~53%

  • Cambodia: ~12%

  • Laos: ~10%

  • China: ~4.2%

  • Nigeria: ~1.8%

  • Malaysia: ~1.6%

  • Vietnam: ~1.5%

  • Bangladesh: ~0.9%

  • Taiwan: ~0.7%

  • India: ~0.5% [1]

  1. Predominant Demographics: The top nationalities in the foreign prison system are overwhelmingly from neighbouring countries: Myanmar (roughly 52.9%), Laos, and Cambodia. [1]

  2. Other Major Nationalities: The remainder of the foreign population is primarily made up of citizens from China, Vietnam, Nigeria, Malaysia, India, and Taiwan. [1, 2]

  3. Western Representation: Westerners (from Europe, North America, Oceania, etc.) represent a tiny minority within the broader, non-Asian demographic. Because their numbers are small, the exact population is not broken down by specific Western countries in official annual reports. [1, 2]

  4. Common Offences: Among foreign nationals, the majority of incarcerations are for drug-related offences, immigration violations, and economic crimes (like fraud or document forgery)

Well this one isn't. I've lived nearly 20 years near Pattaya, married for most of them to a Thai woman and am 82 yoa. I'm English and have never punched a Thai in the face my entire life. Nor have I ever been jailed for causing trouble either in the UK or in a foreign country. I do have tattoos though which I obtained during my career in the army, I suppose that makes me a wrong 'un in the eyes of some on here - :Aaaagh! A Brit with tattoos".

Despite having less than half of the population of the UK and few visitors to Thailand than the UK, you are constantly in the press as well for being up to no good.

I'll make the assumption that he has mental health issues. If that's the case has he been prescribed medication and has he been taking it? That's the first place to start investigating. If he doesn't have medication or it has never been prescribed he needs to be set up with proper medical care.

Again, assuming that he is a tourist, Thai authorities may want to deport him but in his current state he shouldn't be deemed fit to fly. Imagine someone going off like that inside an aircraft cabin while only half way to the destination. I wouldn't want to be on that flight!

I suppose he would be medicated or handcuffed on plane. I saw this happen on a Lufthansa flight . Three flight personnel came and handcuffed the man to the seat. Certainly not very comfortable but for safety reasons right.

The day a Thai politician stands for election on a policy of ‘all immigrants out’, draws closer.

I suggest that should not happen as I believe from what I have read International tourists generate around 1.7 trillion baht annually for Thailand, which is about 9% to 13% of the country's total GDP.

Also if they restricted tourists, such as me back in 2013 I would not have met my now Thai wife who now lives in Australia with me and sends money back home to support her family. In short there would be all sorts of serious economic repercussions if you banned tourists.
