Chinese Tourist Held After Cars Damaged in Chiang Mai

Police in Chiang Mai detained a Chinese tourist on 26 May 2026 after she allegedly damaged several vehicles during an argument with her boyfriend near Charoen Charoen Market in San Kamphaeng district.

According to reports from the Chiang Mai Provincial Police radio centre, the dispute involved a Chinese couple arguing near Charoen Charoen Market on Chiang Mai-Mae On Road in tambon San Klang, San Kamphaeng district. During the altercation, the woman allegedly grabbed hard objects and threw them at passing vehicles, causing damage to cars belonging to local motorists.

Patrol officers from San Kamphaeng Police Station were dispatched to the scene and found the male tourist waiting for officers. The woman had already left the area barefoot and was seen walking along the highway towards Wat Don Chan in Mueang Chiang Mai district, which falls under the jurisdiction of Mae Ping Police Station.

Mae Ping police later located and detained the woman. Officers reported that she cried continuously while in custody. San Kamphaeng police then travelled to Mae Ping Police Station to transfer her back for questioning.

During the transfer, the woman reportedly resisted police efforts to place her in the patrol vehicle. Officers eventually persuaded her to cooperate and transported her to San Kamphaeng Police Station. Witnesses said she repeatedly shouted the word “family”, claiming the dispute was a private matter.

Pol Col Suramon Chalermchan, superintendent of San Kamphaeng Police Station, confirmed that both Chinese tourists had been taken into custody and handed over to investigators for questioning. Police said preliminary information indicated the couple had been arguing before the woman allegedly used hard objects to strike and throw at vehicles near the market area.

Authorities are now waiting for affected motorists to formally file complaints regarding the damaged vehicles. Police said further legal proceedings will depend on statements from victims and the outcome of the investigation.

Komchadluek reported that the incident caused disruption in the area and drew attention from passersby as officers attempted to calm the woman and safely remove her from the roadside. No injuries were reported during the incident.

FAFO, Another PRC princess throwing a fit.

P.S. I lived in the PRC for 15 years and the princelings and princesses, which are clearly the minority, are world class self centered brats. Throwing and hitting are 4 year old behavioral traits. These stunted adults vent with wild abandon perceived assaults on their singular view of the world.

I once witnesses a 50+ brat throw a world class temper tantrum because the Ritz Carlton, 2 room breakfast feast buffet, was missing the one item he wanted badly. Plates were thrown and lots of screaming and kicking. A 50+ year old man, nice.

Isn't it wonderful how riding in the bed of pickups is illegal, but that is the usual way the police transport naughty people. Says everything about respect for the law, even by the police.

No police vans to safely transport suspects? Strange for a modern country.

That was a temporary measure for one Songkran period when there was public uproar about a ban as people demanded the right to put their own life in danger.

I read it was permanently revised. It doesn't affect me much, but every now and again I have a few in the back for short local journeys. It would be nice to know I'm not breaking the law.

Google 'is riding in the bed of a pickup illegal in Thailand' and it is but it isn't enforced. Same as so many things in Thailand. There are rules, which are ignored.

Many years ago I was messing around with a brand new digital camera that I had no idea how to use. We were on the outer ring road in Bangkok and my wife was driving. Probably at least 120kmph. All of a sudden a pickup passed us like we were standing still and I barely had enough time to get a poor shot.

But, recognising the lack of safety belts they have handcuffed her to the vehicle.😀

It is nuts - that this is possibly the worse way anyone could be transported... Handcuffed arms behind back like that - looks like ons speed-bump and dislocated shoulders.

I'd refuse to be transported like that too - if under-arrest for something - I'd be happy to sit in the back of the pickup - but in the flat-bed - no chance. Of course, I doubt if in such circumstances I'd have any choice nor have have room to argue my case - nevertheless - transporting arrestees like this is outrageous.

Indeed - this is exactly what happened.

In April 2017, just days before Songkran, Thailand’s military government announced strict new road safety measures, including a ban on passengers riding in the back trays of pickup trucks. The rules were to be heavily enforced during Songkran’s notorious “Seven Dangerous Days” - the annual holiday period that routinely produces some of the world’s deadliest road statistics.

The backlash was immediate. Large sections of the public argued the crackdown unfairly targeted ordinary and poorer Thais, particularly rural families who depend on pickups as everyday transport.

Faced with mounting anger, police effectively retreated on 6 April 2017 - the very day the regulations were due to take effect - announcing that enforcement against passengers riding in pickup beds would be suspended until after Songkran.

The irony was extraordinary. Authorities backed away from enforcing a law specifically intended to reduce road deaths during the most lethal travel week of the year.

And after the festival, exactly what many expected happened: the issue quietly vanished. No sustained enforcement. No serious national campaign. No political will. Just the continuation of a deeply normalised and obviously dangerous practice that contributes to thousands of road deaths every year.

Poor bloke - his missus throws a full-scale tantrum, starts damaging random cars, and somehow he ends up getting hauled off by police too. What exactly did he do?

He should’ve just told them: “Take her - she’s the one smashing vehicles and acting illegally"...

Lock her up for the night, let her calm down and think about her behaviour. Then charge her for the damage and fine her for dangerous conduct.

Meanwhile, he can finally sit down somewhere peaceful with a cold beer and enjoy a few hours away from the chaos of a completely unhinged woman.

To add, there have been occasions when the BIB have stirred themselves at night to arrest club-goers and piled them into the back of their police pickups, only for said party people to jump out upon arrival at the police station and do a runner. Keystone cops stuff, and why we love Thailand.

Thai women are completely normal and sane compared to mainland Chinese women, can tell you from firsthand experience that Chinese chicks are more crazy, and per capita as well.

Well they were trying to put her in the flat bed of a pick up truck. Not quite “in the vehicle “. On the other hand, she deserved it considering the lack of consideration she had for other people’s property.

The funny part was seeing the police in riot gear handling the barefoot princess in a dress the back of the ute, ...with the comment nobody was hurt in the incident ....
