Doctor Recovers 200,000 Baht After In-Flight Theft

A Thai doctor recovered 200,000 baht in cash after alerting airport officials to a theft during a domestic flight from Udon Thani to Bangkok. The incident prompted a warning to airline passengers about the risks of storing valuables in overhead luggage compartments. Authorities detained a suspect at the airport shortly after the aircraft landed.

Songwut Promtho, also known as “Mor Ta,” from The V-Sage Clinic shared details of the incident online. He said the theft occurred during a one-hour flight from Udon Thani to Bangkok. According to the doctor, he placed his bag in the overhead compartment after boarding, which is common practice for many passengers.

During the flight, Dr Songwut noticed a Chinese passenger repeatedly getting up and walking toward the restroom. He said the frequency of the trips appeared unusual during such a short journey. The behaviour made him increasingly cautious about his belongings.

When the plane landed in Bangkok, the same passenger reportedly rushed off the aircraft quickly. Dr Songwut said the man’s hurried departure raised his suspicions. Because he had been carrying a large amount of cash from his clinic to deposit at a bank, he immediately checked his bag.

He soon discovered that the 200,000 baht in cash was missing. Believing the passenger’s behaviour was suspicious, the doctor alerted airport staff and began following the man through the terminal. Airport officials assisted him in stopping the suspect before he was able to leave the airport.

Authorities later recovered the full amount of cash. During a search, officers reportedly found additional foreign currency in the suspect’s possession. Another passenger on the same flight also reported that money had been stolen from their belongings.

The suspect was handed over to police for further investigation. Officials have not yet released additional details about possible charges or the identity of the individual. Investigators are examining the circumstances of the incident and the reports from other passengers.

Following the incident, Dr Songwut shared his experience as a warning to travellers. He urged airline passengers to remain vigilant and regularly check their belongings during flights. The doctor specifically advised caution when storing valuables in overhead compartments.

Khaosod reported that airline security and airport authorities are expected to review the case as part of the ongoing investigation. The incident has drawn attention to the potential risk of theft during flights, particularly when passengers store valuable items out of sight.

btw, the xray machine can clearly detect money.

Absolutely...the cabin baggage scanner summoned a guy who was joined immediately by another who asked how much cash I had......opened bag at same time grabbing the bank receipts and they were gone in seconds

£1000 is the limit at which they "can" ask questions as to origins and answering won it on the dogs is not the right answer lol

Declaration level was 10,000 Euro (yep note the different currency)....not sure if thats reverted to equivalent in Sterling since we final left the EU

Nothing surpricing me anymoy. We also know how many foreigners they arrested in airports in Thailand who stealing passengers suitcases. Ur not safe anywhere. People steal money..phones..gold..and so on.

My 1st trip to Pakistan & as I was watching my suitcase come around the carousel some guy picked it up, studiously checked the labels (Business Class Tags so I guess he thought it was worth it) then gave himself a thumbs up as he put it on his trolley.

His face when he tried to walk past me, I picked him up by the throat & said... MINE!!!

Apparently luggage theft is rampant in Karachi... Should have reported him but he ran off before I could do anything.

I think I would pass seeing this doctor. He seems to lack some common sense. After-all he could have deposited in a bank in Udon Thani before departing for Bkk.

sorry, yet another stupid comment

I always bring £4-5,000 back from the UK in the hidden back pocket of my rucksack (which has got 3 thumbs down so far) & never have a problem with it going through the X-Rays.

I know they can see it as I once got stopped in the full body scanners (I think it was Munich, might have been Helsinki) for having a £20 note in my shirt pocket... The guy said to me that when they said everything needed to go through the scanner, they meant everything.

I would have never left it off my person. Just too risky these days. Better safe than sorry and 200,000 Baht can easily be packed on your body.

Doesn't the Thai government set limits on how much money can be transported on domestic flights?

Reports of luggage theft in many US airports where the thieves who work in the airport have the TSA master key.

Also have heard of thefts of non secured luggage (either luggage in canvas or not properly locked), in areas like Amsterdam, and of course Heathrow. Also had read of issues in Budapest/Hungary.

So Thailand, for the moment, is no worse then the rest of the world when it comes to thieves who linger in airports or who work in airports.

Wherever possible I get to the carousel at the earliest opportunity...fast walk to immigration hopefully shortest queue and I dont stand anywhere at Carousel but I stand at exact spot the bags come off the chute

Foolproof to avoid any deliberate or accidental picking up of wrong bag

I've taken now to using an old Green Antler bag and tie pink string around grab handle.....its not the prettiest lol but the chances of it going astray is zero !

That's how I immediately knew one of my luggage was forgotten in Doha as soon as I landed in Rio de Janeiro. What an amazing place!

Can it tell you when someone takes cash out of your hand baggage in the overhead compartment?

Well, as nobody else has said it, I will.

Kudo's to this smart thinking pax, being aware of the suspicious guy, checking his money as soon as possible, and getting the thief caught!

To all the guys putting him down, it could have been a night flight when banks are closed, not easy to deposit 200k in an ATM, many things we don't know.

One thing we DO know is, without his quick thinking and actions, the thief would have now been enjoying his ill-gotten gains!!!
