Masked Gang Raid Brit’s Pattaya Home, Flee With ฿2m

Three hooded men armed with knives stormed a home in the Pattaya area, late on 26 February, stealing a safe containing more than 2 million baht in cash from a British resident before fleeing in a black pickup truck. The victims, a 32-year-old British national and his 34-year-old Thai partner, were left shaken but unharmed. Police have launched a manhunt following the robbery at Chokchai Village 9, off Soi Khao Noi.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Chanchai Songwansaksri, deputy inspector at Nong Prue Police Station, received the report of the incident which occurred at 10:35pm and informed Pol. Col. Natthaphon Phong Suk Sakun, superintendent of Nong Prue Police Station. Investigators and tourist police attended the two-storey townhouse in Moo 10, Nong Prue. The incident took place inside a gated community.

The victim, identified as Mr Wesleigh Cyril Russell, 32, a British national who works as a chef abroad, was at home with his Thai girlfriend, Ms Chandee and a British friend. According to their statements, three suspects dressed in dark hooded clothing concealing their faces forced entry while the group were relaxing inside. The robbers held a knife to the British man’s neck and demanded to know where cash was kept.

The gang forced the victims into the kitchen and stole two mobile phones, an iPhone 16 and an iPhone 14. When Ms Chandee attempted to flee, she was dragged back by the suspects. The men then went upstairs and removed a safe containing more than 2 million baht in cash, which the couple had withdrawn in preparation for purchasing a house.

CCTV footage clearly captured three men wearing long black hooded tops and trousers, with only their eyes visible and described by the victims as possible foreign nationals. The video shows them entering the property, followed by screams, and later leaving calmly carrying the safe. The suspects boarded a black pickup truck parked outside and drove away, crashing through the security barrier at the guard post as they fled.

Daily News reported that Pol. Col. Natthaphon ordered officers to broadcast the suspects’ vehicle description and set up roadblocks. Investigators have been deployed to gather evidence and track down the gang. Police said efforts are under way to apprehend the suspects and bring them to justice as quickly as possible. Authorities are continuing to review CCTV footage and collect witness statements.

Key Takeaways

• Three hooded men armed with knives stole a safe containing over 2 million baht from a British resident in Nong Prue on 26 February.

• The suspects fled in a black pickup truck after crashing through the village security barrier.

• Police have launched a manhunt and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify and arrest the perpetrators.

The safe seems a bit odd. Normally you'd have it secured to something, or have it in a floor or wall. According to the reports they just took it. They'll have to break it open somehow as if they had the key or combination I would assume they would have taken just the money.

surely it's safer and easier to do a bank transfer? unless you don't want a paper trail, for whatever reason...? the authorities are concerned with travel card corruption (passport and phone number required to obtain a travel card ffs) and yet allow large value cash payments? oh the irony.

on another level, those piles of cash will be ten times higher if they cancel the 1000 baht notes...

sounds like an obviously British accent in the video to me.

guy has a legit job - chef, but nothing else makes sense. who pays cash for a house with no mortgage? and even if paying cash, you could do a transfer. why would you keep it in a safe? and why would you advertise it to your pals at the bar?

sounds more likely drug-related money.

And how many 32 year olds have two million in cash anyway?

Inside Job. The girlfriend may have told someone about the money maybe knowing what would happen maybe not knowing, someone at the bank was in on it or the Brit let it slip to someone he knows.

The informant / snitch.

Anyway, this guy was delusional that these guys were all close friends.

People cannot be trusted.

Certainly not with knowledge of 2m baht. People get killed for 10 baht.

Why not? After all, we don't live in Europe. I recently bought a car worth 4 million in cash here, but the dealer refused to accept it, so I had to deposit it into a bank account together with an employee.

Did the employee escape?

I've bought two houses in Thailand with cash. Bought my first car with cash. Second car was done with a cashiers check. Back then the sellers wanted cash so that is what I provided. These days cashiers checks are more accepted.

How many years ago?

Can't you do a simple bank transfer in this day and age?

Did you keep the cash in a safe before the purchase?

How long? 72 hours?

Did you have drinking buddies over while the money was sitting in the safe?

Did you trust your girlfriend at the time with all that money sitting in the safe?

Last house was about 20 years ago. You can't do a bank transfer if the seller has no bank account. The money was kept in a brown paper bag. We have a safe now, a proper safe, not one you can casually tuck under one arm as you walk out of the house.

We did when we bought our piece of land, it was 15 years ago, we paid cash, went to the bank and got 800k out and gave it to the land seller he asked for cash, even took us in his own car.

We are far from the only ones paying cash.

Obviously somebody did rat out. From the girl's side ? Somebody at the bank ? neither of these ? hard to say.

Nevertheless, very bad image for tourism.

Amateurs, which further points towards inside job spur of moment crime of opportunity. Phones likely ditched out of fear of tracking software or unusable due to face recognition/passcode software. Cops likely suspect girlfriend, as do I.

If the perps were Thai then yes - girlfriend would've been the first suspect - however they were clearly foreign (British accent) so it's much more likely one of his "friends" was in on it. Assuming only a few people knew about the money the list of suspects gets real short. The girlfriend looked genuinely terrified and tried to call for help once she was able to run outside - so unlikely she knew about it ahead of time. (but you never know - it's Pattaya - maybe she ran her mouth at the bar while some guys were listening)

The phones were ditched because they never wanted them - they just took them to prevent the victims from calling police immediately after. Either way they'll probably be caught very soon.

Yeah, sure! I never heard of that the land office has been robbed. Sounds to me that it might be better than a bank job as it sounds on you.

I always thought it would be a great place to rob too, but I suspect a lot of the Thais carried guns so maybe a bit risky.

Might have a point there. I also know they bring a lot of cash many times. You would have thought somebody at least would try.

Oh my, pj, you've cracked it! ( the safe, lol).

Extracts from one of the links you posted-

Wesley Cyril Russell, 18, of George Street, and Liam Nuttall, 18, of De Lacy Street, pleaded guilty to two charges of burglary at the Sandy Lodge Hotel, Newquay, making off without payment and using criminal obtained cash.

Blackburn magistrates heard the pair stole more than £1,500 from the safe of the hotel where they had been staying and then left in the dead of night without paying their £1,922 bill.

And they also took a set of master keys which resulted in the hotel having to pay £11,500 to have every lock on the premises replaced.

This was back in 2012, so 13 years later he's 31/32.

Seems Mr Russell has a thing about safes!
