Norwegian, 77, robbed by taxi rider in Pattaya

A 77-year-old Norwegian man has reported losing more than 5,000 baht after a man dressed similarly to a motorcycle taxi rider allegedly took cash from his wallet on Pratumnak Road in Pattaya.

The victim, Mr Ingar Opseph, said the suspect first offered him a ride, then asked for money for food before reaching into his wallet and fleeing on a motorcycle.

The incident was reported to have occurred at 12.20am on 24 August 2026, opposite Pratumnak Soi 10.

Money taken as wallet was opened

Mr Opseph's 55-year-old Thai girlfriend told reporters that he had been walking home after exercising and was waiting to cross the road. Their home is about 200 metres from where the incident happened.

A Thai man, wearing what appeared to be a motorcycle taxi vest, allegedly rode against the traffic flow and stopped in front of him. He offered to take Mr Opseph home, but the Norwegian declined because he was close to his residence.

The man then claimed he had no money to buy food and asked for help, according to the girlfriend.

Mr Opseph intended to give him 20 baht. However, as he opened his wallet, the suspect allegedly saw 1,000-baht notes, reached inside and took more than 5,000 baht in cash.

He then rode away against traffic towards the Pratumnak traffic-light junction, also known as the Khao Phra Tamnak junction.

The theft happened so quickly that Mr Opseph was unable to recall details of the motorcycle, its registration plate or any number on the rider's vest.

Couple ask police to check CCTV

The couple later filed a complaint with Pol Lt Col Itthikorn Saikratok, an investigating inspector at Pattaya City Police Station. They also approached the media because they were concerned the case might not progress, and asked police to check CCTV footage around the scene and the suspected escape route.

Mr Opseph's girlfriend said he had previously been targeted in Jomtien Soi 5 several years ago, when a gold necklace worth tens of thousands of baht was snatched. A police report was made at the time, but the person responsible has not been found.

Mr Opseph said he felt upset and "stupid for believing" the man. He has lived in Thailand for more than 15 years and said he did not expect somebody he tried to help to take his money.

The victim urged tourists and Pattaya residents to be especially cautious if strangers ask for money or try to get close to them.

Put the good feeling factor and trust back in Thai taxi drivers does good

What has taxi drivers got to do with this story?

There is no taxi driver involved at all.

lol i wouldn't , as I'd need to pay another 5000 for the engine required to drive it, otherwise it would just be an annoyance

Well if he was wearing the traditional "win" uniform ( waistcoat) he probably was a motorcycle taxi driver, those entitled to wear the uniform do not generally take kindly to those who choose to impersonate them, violence in such situations is not uncommon. He might just have been "moonlighting" as an opportunistic thief

He came from a time and place where one didn't expect such things to happen. It's not even really necessary to bring any cash out with the QR prompt pay system

unless, for example, you encounter a shop or some other service provider who only accepts cash !

Classic snatch and grab theft.

Experienced travelers always keep big money in the safe in the hotel or back in your condo. 👈

Small money in pocket for everything else

Conclusion: This guy isn't an experienced traveler

its not unique to experienced travellers , anybody with any sense carries only the smallest amount of cash necessary, especially if out and about in a place like Pattaya in the early hours , Having said that most people, for some inexplicable reason have smartphones worth £1000+ and its permanently hanging out of their back pocket , one was recently forced at knifepoint to reveal his crypto wallet password and lost a small fortune .

Taxi drivers drive a car. Motorcycle riders ride a motorbike.

There is no mention of a taxi driver with or without a meter

Taxi drivers use meters in their cars. There is no car involved in this story. He was approached by a guy on a motorbike whom he assumed was a motorbike taxi because the rider asked him if he needed a ride.

5, 000 baht isn’t far off “ the smallest amount of cash necessary”. About 100 quid?

He may or not be experienced, but at the time of this snatch and grab theft, he wasn’t travelling at all.

He was 200 meters from his house! And 5,000 baht IS pretty small money.

as I said, few would wear a fake motorcycle taxi vest due to inevitable repercussions from genuine motorcycle taxi drivers

only if one is thinking of paying for something that costs around that much, for cheaper purchases less would suffice

neither have I, For the simple reason that they don't exist. The guy who approached him was wearing what he thought was a motorcycle taxi drivers vest, it is that which made him assume the guy was a taxi rider ,

I have read the article several times. There is absolutely no mention of a taxi driver. As I pointed out previously, taxi drivers drive cars. Motorbike taxi riders ride motorbikes.

This article is about a fake taxi motorbike rider, not taxi car drivers. taxi motorbike riders do not use a meter. So all the talk about meters etc is irrelevant.

Well the article casts some doubt by using the word appeared.

“A Thai man, wearing what appeared to be a motorcycle taxi vest,”

And by using the word similarly.

“after a man dressed similarly to a motorcycle taxi rider”

So he may or may not be an actual motorbike taxi rider.

If he is a genuine taxi rider, he took a heck of a risk. The jackets are numbered so identification is easy. Just that in this case the victim was sufficiently surprised that he didn’t read the number. A lot of people would have.

as I said before had he been wearing a fake one he would already be taking a risk. the mortorcycle taxis are a tight knit bunch with a propensity for violence towards those that fraudulently wear the waistcoat

It's perhaps a bit like wearing a high vis jacket in the UK, you can go anywhere. A motorcycle taxi driver get up in Thailand allows you to hang about wherever you want. (And legitimately join in on any tourist beat downs!)
