Phuket shop sign bars Israeli tourists, sparks debate

A Phuket shopkeeper has put up a sign barring Israeli tourists from entering, prompting a strong reaction on Thai social media after Phuket Times shared an image of it on Saturday, August 22.

According to a report from Naewna, the shop owner said the move followed a previous confrontation outside the business. The report did not identify the shop or give its precise location on the island.

Owner says sign is intended to prevent disputes

The shopkeeper said: "I was once verbally abused by Israelis in front of my shop. I cursed back that time, but my intention in putting up the sign is to prevent future problems arising from among #Israeli tourists."

Phuket Times had previously said it was preparing to submit a letter to authorities seeking an investigation into Israeli nationals at Patong beach. It cited alleged widespread dissatisfaction with what it called "arrogant" behaviour, including claims that locals had been chased away and outsiders barred from an area believed to have been acquired through nominee networks.

Online commenters call for wider action

After the image was posted, commenters backed the shopkeeper's decision. Some wrote that preventing problems early was the right approach, while others said they would do the same.

Other comments urged similar action across Phuket, with one saying shops should follow suit "until every shop in Phuket is affected". That comment said Thais should not allow foreigners to take advantage of or bully them, and should not welcome people with bad manners.

Several commenters called for Thai unity. Others said government agencies were weak and ordinary people had to protect themselves, while another said Phuket residents should unite because police, local administration and ISOC could not be relied upon.

One final comment urged people to "resist strongly", adding: "If you weaken, you will end up like the Palestinians."

While I don't agree with this in principle, the Israelis (particularly young arrogant ones) aren't helping themselves... At a time they'd best keep a low profile they're out there drawing (bad) attention to their nationality

The words "goy" and "goyim" (plural) originally meant "nation" in Hebrew, but came to mean "non-Jew" during Roman times. The English word "gentile" is the translation of "goy." It refers to ALL non-Jews, not just white Christians.

"Goyim" has never meant "cattle" in Hebrew or Yiddish. That is merely an antisemitic myth. "Goy" is sometimes used today by U.S. Jews in a mildly perjorative fashion to refer to the worst aspects of blue collar or Middle Class culture, but never to mean "cattle."

Lol. Stating that "gentile" is the translation of "goy" is etymologically lazy. "Gentile" derives from the Latin gentilis (belonging to a clan or tribe). It serves as a functional English equivalent, heavily mediated by the Greek word ethnos in early translations. Treating language as a 1:1 mathematical equation proves you don't understand linguistics.

It wasn't necessary to go into the derivation of the word "gentile." The point is that when Jews use the word "goyim," they are not calling non-Jews "cattle." That "goyim" means "cattle" is an antisemitic myth, sometimes an outright lie.

Do you believe "goyim" can be used in Hebrew to refer to non-Jews as "cattle?"

No, it wouldn't. BUT (and it's an exceptionally big Screenshot 2026-08-11 8.26.18 PM.png), there is no genocide against Palestinians in the current conflict.

I refuse to cooperate in turning every thread on Israel into a discussion of genocide. This thread is centered on an incident in Phuket involving a Thai and a group of Israelis. That's the subject I am willing to discuss.

Not according to the rules of Asean Now. I could just as easily say every thread about Israel should discuss despicable Palestinian terrorism and antisemitism or the despicable genocide of the Holocaust of WWII.

Threads should stay on topic.

@captain_shane Was that too complicated a question for you to answer? I framed it as "yes" or "no" question, so you don't have to give an explanation if that is too taxing for you.

What is happening in Gaza is nothing like what happened in Europe between 1933 and 1945. I would recommend you read one or both of the following books to get a better understanding of the Holocaust.

If you prefer to read online, I would recommend "Introduction to the Holocaust" at https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/introduction-to-the-holocaust

It is hardly 'exactly the same' is it?

hopefully, you’re not seriously suggesting that killing 70,000 people is somehow less of a crime just because it is being compared to the Holocaust ...?

there is no difference ... killing is killing, regardless of how you compare or justify it ...

Yet the numbers killed Oct 7th have been dismissed relative to Palestinian deaths since. It is all wrong!

Terrorists are being targeted in Gaza .

No, they have not. The hamas terrorist attack on October 7 doesn't justify Israel's behaviour in gaza and the intensifying attacks in the west bank, Lebanon and Syria.

And you can also notice a huge difference in the number of Japanese and German civilian deaths compared to Palestinians.

Country Time Span Civilian Deaths

Japan 1941-1945 500,000 to 1,000,000

Germany 1939-1945 1,500,000 to 3,000,000

Palestine

(Gaza, West Bank) 2023-2025 34,500

.

Standard disclaimer: the 70,000 figure given by includes members of Hamas' military wing and other armed groups as well as noncombatants, i.e. civilians. If we use 20,000 as a conservative figure for the number of armed combatants killed, we have 50,000 left.

However, that figure has to be adjusted for the number of Palestinians who died without any armed conflict. That is mostly old age, but diseases and medical conditions (cancer, heart attacks) as well as vehicular accidents, drowning, home accidents, etc.

Taking the pre-conflict figure for 2022 as the benchmark and adjusting for the 220 Palestinians killed by the IDF that year, we get 15,500 deaths from natural causes and non-conflict accidents. That means 34,500 Palestian civilians were killed by the IDF following the Oct. 7 attacks.

In terms of civilian losses, neither the conflict in Gaza nor the Allied military actions against Japan and Germany in WW2 were genocide or war crimes,

I used to know a Thai ladyboy who was operating a nail shop in Chiang Mai. She put up a sign barring Chinese, because they wanted to haggle endlessly over prices, wasted her time, and crowded out other customers.

IMO if any nationality is disruptive with a shopkeeper, said person is quite within their rights to tell them to p!ss off.

You extend that to a foreigner shop in thailand with that same attitude towards thai .....right.

In terms of civilian losses, neither the conflict in Gaza nor the Allied military actions against Japan and Germany in WW2 were genocide or war crimes,

A landmark report by the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry explicitly concluded that Israel has committed genocidal acts. Their arguments center on two main pillars required by international law: actions and intent.

The Physical Acts: Critics point out that the war has resulted in massive civilian casualties, with the Gaza Ministry of Health reporting more than 60,000–70,000 deaths, alongside the displacement of roughly 1.9 million people. They argue that Israel has committed four out of five prohibited acts under the Genocide Convention:

Killing members of the protected group.

Causing serious bodily or mental harm.

Deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction (e.g., blockading aid, destroying healthcare networks, and inducing widespread famine).

Imposing measures intended to prevent births (e.g., targeting maternity care).

Establishing Intent (Mens Rea): Genocide scholars and UN investigators argue that "genocidal intent" can be inferred from both the systematic pattern of total destruction in Gaza and the public rhetoric used by senior Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog, which critics describe as dehumanizing language that incites violence. A June 2026 UN commission report further alleged that the military's systematic operational focus has directly targeted children to destroy the demographic future of Palestinians in Gaza.

As we know the ICJ will rule on this question, whether Israel committed genocide or not. Israel's strategy is to drag out the ruling as long as possible, delay tactics mean we won't have a ruling now until 2029. However, there can be no doubt that what Israel is doing in Gaza is genocide.

Indeed what was done by the Allies with Germans after 1945 also amounts to genocide.
