Police Say Murder Not Ruled Out in Brits Death in Bangkok

Police have not ruled out murder in the death of British tourist Joshua Kershaw, 21, who was found dead at a hotel in Bangkok’s Sukhumvit 7/1 alley on January 13, just hours after arriving in Thailand. Investigators say the case remains open pending final official autopsy results and further evidence, despite growing pressure from his family.

Lieutenant Colonel Pairat Khamlee, Deputy Superintendent of Lumpini Police Station, said: “Police have not yet received the official autopsy results from the hospital and are still following up. From the beginning, we have not ruled out any possibilities, whether it is murder, a drug overdose, or anything else.”

Kershaw had travelled to Bangkok and went directly to his hotel before heading out to nearby bars, where he was seen drinking with a black woman described by witnesses as an African sex worker. Police said the woman was observed on CCTV sitting and drinking with him and has since been identified and questioned.

At around 2:20am, Kershaw collapsed on the floor of a venue while the woman stood nearby. Witnesses stated she did not attempt to interfere and police say statements so far do not suggest she administered substances or was involved in any altercation.

He was taken to hospital but discharged himself roughly an hour later. He later returned to the same street for more drinks before going back to his hotel at approximately 5:30am, where he was found dead in his room the following afternoon by a maid. Police confirmed they have interviewed multiple witnesses, including hotel staff and bar employees, and reviewed CCTV footage.

Kershaw’s family have said the case is now being treated as “murder/manslaughter”, citing preliminary toxicology findings of “a combination of seven different substances in his system at extremely high levels”. In a statement, his mother Jenny said: “Our family is devastated and searching for answers. We believe Joshua deserves a full and proper investigation. No family should have to fight this hard just to understand how their loved one died.”

The 21-year-old landscaper, originally from Grimsby, had travelled to Thailand for a week-long holiday and had been in the country only hours before his death. His body was repatriated last month and a service was held at Wakefield Crematorium.

Further concerns have also been raised over the initial police response, with claims that the first officer at the scene did not inform the British Embassy and initially treated the case as a routine drug-related death. Authorities have not confirmed those claims but say the investigation is ongoing and under review.

Officials say conclusions will depend on final autopsy and toxicology reports, while the family continue to seek answers and await confirmation ruling from a UK coroner.

7 substances at extremely high level sounds like he was drugged or took the wrong drugs.

All need to do it take 1 pill of some whatever crazy pill you got, and if that pill is from a bad batch with too much fentanyl, you will die, not even knowing anything.

all it takes is 1 wrong pill with too much of any drug like fentanyl.

There are many documented cases of this.

From what I read, this such drugs are often mixed with other drugs, and in particular with heroin in order to create more addiction.

Is this common in Thailand? ie spiking drinks?

I heard it's a big problem in Medellin, Colombia.

But if it's not sth common here, it could be that he took the drugs volanturily.

Never take open drinks and never leave your drink unattended. But that's hard to do when you're drunk.

Reckon I had my drink spiked once - Was at a late outdoor beer bar (well after hours) with a mate.

Drunk and focused on conversation, I had my beer on the top behind me, took a drink and noticed a horrible acrid taste - reaction was to spit the beer out into the gutter immediately. Paid the bill and immediately left.

I could have been mistaken - but a beer doesn't go from tasting normal on the first two 'swigs' to tasting bitter and acrid like that in the matter of a few mins.

So - is getting a drink spiked common? - No, I don't thing so, but its also not unheard of either.

People don't spike other people's drinks with 7 different things. Also, he was admitted to hospital once and then left on his own and then went straight back to the bar. Connect the dots. Like I said, there is a 99% chance he took them himself.

How do you know 'what' people spike drinks with ??? - It could be just whatever 'cocktail' they got hold of, made or purchased earlier... it could be a mixture of things in a capsule thats tipped into the drink... One thing for sure - there is no SOP or specific recipe that criminals follow.

Its also possible the young lad was on 'something' and whatever he was spike with (if spiked at all) interacted and compounded his problem.

After reports he fell off his stool, its also possible he suffered a head injury that wasn't picked up on the initial visit - and he succumbed to his injury while sleeping off his evening - the cocktail of drugs part of the story could simply be a red-herring.

From the UPDATE - with coroners results:

He reportedly had Heroine and Cocaine in his system - that seems more like 'recreational' use that anything else - it takes only a only amount of Fentanyl to OD.

so who do you think spiked it? a bar girl or one of your "mates"?

they can't take your wallet in front of a bunch of people, so I don't get it.

It was one of those mobile bars bars on a cart type contraptions - they set up shop randomly on a pavement - not fixed bar - they likely get moved along week to week with the BiB patrols.

Something poured in to drink - maybe didn't get a chance to mix it in (so I tasted it) - possibly looking to get punter back to a hotel and rob him when he falls asleep etc.

Or, maybe it was nothing - but something made the beer go from OK to a minute later tasting very bitter and nasty - I'd placed the beer behind by my back.

Why is everyone here going on and on about drinks being spiked. He obviously took them himself. Stop jumping to dumb conclusions despite all evidence to the contrary.

Considering it from another perspective, it seems unusual for someone to travel to Thailand specifically to be with a Black woman. What’s the reasoning behind that connection? I’ve never heard anyone express excitement about a Thai vacation with the intention of seeking out an African Sex worker. It just doesn’t add up.🤔

Thank you.

This is the best example of projection I have seen on this forum for ages.

Priceless.

I guess it depends on the substance, but typically it is tasteless and you wouldn't know what hit ya until you wake up the next morning with a 4-day hangover. The common date rape drugs like Roofies/GBH/Ketamine are. Could be that the beer was spiked with something else that wasn't tasteless.

They don't need to move. They "rent" the curb spots from the BiB.

When I was his age, I would have went back to the hotel early with that black lady to watch a movie and f*** the night away. Look at the milkers on her. I don't think this young man realized how easy it was to get it on with the women he was around. If I knew, he wouldn't have out longer just drinking like a fool. Which makes it and even bigger tragedy

Exactly when I was out age you wanted to get out of the bar quick as possible and get them back to your room.

I don't know - I'm not up to date on what the best drugs to spike someone are or what they taste like !!...

Relaying personal experience - it could have been anything - but the very sudden change in taste of my beer put the spidey senses on full alert.

Those little pop-up-street-cart-bars 'come and go' - depending on the latest crackdowns and announcements - sometimes the streets are lively and a few of these little bars have popped up... another time there's nothing.

It possibly depends upon who the local Police chief of the area is that year and what their instructions from above are.

Some properly amusing boomer takes on here - the usual lazy assumption and critiques of the younger generation... that they don't know how to interact with the opposite sex just because apps exist. Bit of a stretch - and seeps to paints the older lot as if they all had flawless game and some kind of golden era of seduction going on.

Its more likely the guy just didn’t fancy bumping ugles with bit of brass that happened to be in the same bar as him - simple as that. It’s not like he passed up some once-in-a-lifetime chance with a mythical creature from another realm. Sometimes there’s no grand social decline and boomers are just seeing what the want to to make themselves feel better.

Wrong. It wasn't meant to be a knock on gen Z. But it's just a fact that they are having less sex than ever. And I am not making judgements on why. I am a millennial btw

To a 21 year old landscaper stuck in the bad side of Grimsby , the kind of women available in BKK bars really are mythical creatures from another realm. This is obvious. You are the one here with the boomer takes.

A report discovered that 48 percent of Gen Z adults have never had sex, significantly higher than the 26 percent of millennials

Oh please… how do you know ? from a Newsweek clickbait piece dressed up as science ???

“Nearly half of Gen Z haven’t had sex” sounds dramatic - until you realise it’s based on a single survey mash-up...

It’s the usual lazy formula:

- cherry-pick one stat

- ignore conflicting studies

- slap on a headline

- farm outrage clicks

.... And anyone swallowing it whole? they'll believe most rubbish fed them... “millennials killed X” headline - zero critical thinking, minimum attention required.

Reality is boring: Gen Z just has different attitudes to sex - less casual, more cautious, more online. Not some dramatic “half are virgins” apocalypse - go to any Uni in the UK... and they're all at it like rabbits, just like we were at Uni (according to my nephews) - but it seems the change is not so dramatic - other than 'everything is on social media' so rumours travel fast and extra caution is required... but the same messing about, same hookups etc...

In short: that article is just shaky data and a sensational headline - which generally equals rubbish.

What you mention and how you mention it is exactly what boomer would say - Gen-x-ers are generally less judgemental about the younger generations... But, some gen-x-ers might be 60+ now - so entering grumpy-old-man territory.

So... which are you..

Silent Gen (1928-1945) - Grew up during hardship and war - more reserved

Boomer (1946–1964) - Post-WWII population boom

Gen X (1965–1980) - The latchkey generation - more independent

Millennials (1981–1996) - Came of age with the internet

Generation Z (1997–2012) - Digital natives - social media era

Personally i find GenZ just fine. It's millenials who come across extremely dumb. They literally inherited the lifesavings of their boomer parents and haven't done a day of honest work. Here in Canada they were also one of the most arrogant bunch with statements "My job is secured for life". Now they are all unemployed.

If we are generalizing.....

Hilarious that you suggested that this 21 year old Grimsby landscaper was content just to keep drinking in sh*tty dive bars instead of taking women to his room to have sex with , because the women weren't hot enough. I've never heard a more delusional take.

Drinking in dive bars is so great , better than sex lol

Plausable, but i think he was drugged or the bar sold him cheap alcohol that could be one aspect. And why such a delay with the autopsy results, if it was elcheapo alcohol it will be long gone , but also could be an od of the date rape drug, which a few bar girls have told me give to much and they die , give just enough and you get about a 20 minute window to get them to their hotel , residue after leaving hospital mixed with alcohol might be a cause but im not a Dr, so leave that to the experts whom I hope will act, good that the parents are presuring the police.

If the guy had told them he just got "off the boat" as was here for a week surely there is more money to be made by making him happy enough so he would adopt the black princess for the whole week.

Rather than spiking his drink.

I seem to remember the girls in Phuket were more attentive if you told them you had just arrived for three weeks rather than you told them you have been here for two weeks and are leaving on Wednesday.
