A Qatari tourist is accused of injuring five people during a violent outburst that began inside a cannabis shop in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan, before spilling onto the street and ending with members of the public restraining him.
The incident took place on the evening of 26 July and prompted a response from Hua Hin Police. Witnesses said the man damaged property, assaulted shop staff and attacked several people nearby, including a disabled flower seller using a wheelchair.
Violence spread beyond the shop
A 20-year-old witness, Sujitra, who recorded video of the incident, told reporters she was working in a nearby nail salon when she heard shouting from the cannabis shop across the road.
She said she then saw the foreign man violently assaulting another man before turning on a motorcyclist who had arrived to collect his girlfriend. The suspect then allegedly grabbed flowers from a wheelchair-bound woman selling them on the street corner and punched her in the face, causing her to fall from her wheelchair.
According to witnesses, the man continued to another nearby restaurant before several members of the public intervened. It reportedly took five people to restrain him due to his large build while they waited for police to arrive.
Shop employee says attack was unprovoked
One of the injured cannabis shop employees said he had finished work and went downstairs after hearing shouting. As soon as he opened the door, he was allegedly slapped across the left side of his face without any warning or conversation.
He said a passer-by on a bicycle who attempted to intervene was also assaulted before the suspect attacked the disabled flower seller.
The employee added that the same man had visited the shop two days earlier without displaying any unusual behaviour. Staff believe the violence may have followed an argument with another customer inside the shop, reportedly involving a religious disagreement, before the situation escalated.
The employee said he had received treatment at hospital and intended to pursue legal action. Around five people were reported injured in the incident.
The case also highlights continuing public scrutiny of Thailand’s cannabis industry, particularly where disputes or disorder occur at licensed cannabis shops, although no evidence has been presented that cannabis use itself caused the suspect’s behaviour.
