Sondhi rallies at Israeli Embassy over property fears

Sondhi Limthongkul led supporters of the "Taking Back Our Thailand" movement to the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok on September 10, calling for action over alleged foreign domination of Thai real estate and concerns about some Israeli visitors.

The gathering began at 9am outside Ocean Tower 2 on Sukhumvit 21 in Asoke, where the embassy is based. Pantep Puapongphan, Nititorn Lamlua and Phichit Chaimongkol joined Sondhi, along with network leaders and a large number of members of the public, including Sirinat Samut, known as Sai Samut.

The group said it wanted to submit a letter demanding a crackdown on foreign capital acquiring property in Thailand, including through Thai nominees. It said the aim was to protect Thai sovereignty, the interests of Thai people and domestic businesses.

Embassy meeting offer declined

At about 10.15am, Sondhi told the crowd that the Israeli Embassy had said no staff were working that day, but that the ambassador was prepared to receive him privately at a later date.

IMG_2536.png

Sondhi said he declined because the visit was being made on behalf of Thai people across the country and should not become a private discussion.

He then read an open letter to the embassy in English and Thai. It called on the Thai government and Israeli Embassy to address the issues in practical terms rather than merely acknowledge the complaint through diplomatic procedure.

The letter raised allegations involving the behaviour of some Israeli tourists and residents in Thailand, including alleged lawbreaking, disrespect for local customs, fraud and unpaid service bills. It said such cases had repeatedly affected local communities and prompted calls for more serious regulation.

Visa policy among protesters' concerns

Sai Samut said he had returned from the United States at 4am that morning before attending the rally. He argued that Thai people needed to work together to "take our country back from the government", claiming government administration had harmed Thai people's dignity.

IMG_2569.png

He identified visa-free entry as the starting point of the problem, alleging that some visitors entered Thailand as tourists before operating businesses, settling in the country and mistreating Thai people without government protection.

Sai compared the current atmosphere to the period before the fall of Ayutthaya, while saying he had no political colour and would oppose anyone, of any nationality, who broke laws or failed to respect others.

Four demands

The group is making four demands to the Israeli embassy and government:

 1. Maintain strict control over citizens by enforcing training measures and emphasizing to Israeli tourists the importance of respecting Thai laws and culture.

2. Do not protect offenders; cooperate with the Thai police and authorities in prosecuting Israeli citizens who commit crimes, without using diplomatic intervention.

3. Disclose land ownership and cooperate transparently in the investigation of land ownership and operations of the Chabad Center, as well as related organizations in Thailand.

4. Send a message to the Israeli government urging them to end their atrocities against civilians in conflict zones and to abide by international humanitarian law.

Further rallies planned

Sondhi said the government should be concerned if it continued to favour capital interests rather than managing the situation. He said he would next submit a complaint concerning "Chinese grey capital" and planned speaking events in Chon Buri, Chanthaburi and Khon Kaen.

He also said the movement could gather again after the Election Commission's expected September 14 decision on whether the Senate election collusion case should be sent to the Supreme Court's Election Cases Division.

Separately, national artist Aed Carabao, real name Yuenyong Opakul, said he had recorded a song titled "Where Do Jewish People Come From?" in support of the movement. He cited previous warnings he had posted about alleged Israeli takeovers in Pai, Mae Hong Son, and Koh Phangan, Surat Thani.

I'm pretty sure that would be news to the average Thai and that, for them, Jew/Israeli are interchangeable terms for a single, exclusive foreign group, who come from one place, somewhere across the big water.

Not all Thai's are rice growers from Issan.

A particular foreign group that has made itself more obnoxious than any other of the foreign groups, in multiple ways, and has consequently attracted the most ire from Thais.

The "ire from Thai's" is simply because they are not making money out of this "foreign group" yet, the Chinese package holiday "zero baht tourists" are fine. 😂

Screams of "Antisemitism" aren't going to work in Thailand as most Thais here in Thailand are as nationalistic as Israelis are, if not more than them.
Plus, the post-WW2 guilt suffered by virtually all descendants of Europeans is not a condition that is also shared by Asians in Southeast Asia. They had their own genocidal massacres in Asia, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and in China in the form of The Rape of Nanjing, the Nanjing Massacre, the Sook Ching massacre, and Unit 731 medical experiments and other inhumanities which overshadowed similar events in Europe committed on Jews, Romas, and Slavs.
So claiming Sondhi and company are "antisemites" isn't going to have the affect if would have in, say, Germany or other parts of the EU. "Antisemistism" isn't going to work as a defense against Israelis acting badly in Thai nominee scams or any other acts that are illegal in Thailand. Ashkenazi Jews are nothing more to Thais than your garden variety of "Farang", i.e., they are no more special than any of we goyim of European or Slavic or Celtic or Anglo-Saxon descent. Join the plain-vanilla "Farang" club my Israeli brothers and sisters. And by the way - you all are guests in Thailand, just like that rest of us plain-vanilla "Farangs." If you do illegal stuff, expect to get the attention of most nationalistic Thais, like Sondhi and Company, and about 70 million other Thai nationals.

OK, : Is saying Jews out and wanting all Jews to be deported, is that Anti Semitic or not ?HR01cTraYAAvQ6B.webp

It can be both.

Jews used as a canary in the coal mine.

The political winds in Thailand are obviously anti-foreigner in general.

It's convenient that many foreigners happen to be racist Jew haters and are cheerleading scapegoating Jews when the overall political wave is about them as well.

Good point.

I would bet on other nationalities overstaying, or committing a crime in Thailand, being higher, per capita, than the Jews / Israelis, yet it's the Jews / Israelis that are getting a lot of anti-foreigner attention at the moment.

Revealing of your knowledge level to say Ashkenazi Jews in the context of Israelis in Thailamd.

The majority of modern Israeli are NOT Ashkenazi origin so it follows that would be reflected in the Israeli Jews visiting and living in Thailand. Also you seem to be painting Jews as white. Again it sounds as if you're thinking about the minority in Israel (Ashkenazi). Also whether Ashkenazi Jews are "white" or not is a can of words question that isn't really resolvable as whiteness is a social construct.

Do you think Thais think Arabs are farang?

Some of your points have merit but at the end of the day carrying signs against Jews in front of the Israeli embassy is unambiguous racist Jew hating by obvious basic definition. Whether that labeling has any power when told to Thais or not doesn't change the objective fact of what it is.

Does the protest group also want those businesses back from the Arab Muslim foreigner business owners ?

I guess that the farangs in Thailand who are first in line claiming all critique of Israelis is "antisemitism" could collectively begin writing sharply worded accusations against Thai citizens such as Sondhi and his followers demanding that they be sanctioned and perhaps even arrested for their "antisemetic behavior."
However, do realize that making those claims opens farangs making such statement, such as yourselves, to criminal defamation? Remember - you ARE in Thailand and subject to Thai defamation laws.

In Thailand, criminal defamation is defined in Section 326 of the Criminal Code:
Whoever imputes anything to another person before a third person in a manner likely to impair that person’s reputation or expose them to hatred or scorn commits defamation.Key points:

  • The statement must be communicated to at least one third party (not just said privately to the target).

  • It does not have to be false to be an offence; the focus is on whether it is likely to harm reputation.

  • Basic offence (spoken or similar): up to 1 year imprisonment and/or a fine of up to 20,000 baht.

  • If done by publication (documents, pictures, film, broadcast, online posts, or any other means of spreading it): up to 2 years imprisonment and a fine of up to 200,000 baht (Section 328).

    library.siam-legal.com

There is a limited truth defence (Section 330): if the accused proves the statement is true, they are not punished unless it concerns a purely private matter with no public benefit.Good-faith exceptions also exist (Section 329), such as fair comment on a matter of public interest, statements made in official duties, or reports of open court proceedings. The offence is compoundable: prosecution generally requires a complaint from the injured person (or their close family if they have died). Section 327 also covers statements about a deceased person that harm the reputation of their family.Separately, civil liability can arise under Section 423 of the Civil and Commercial Code for circulating untrue statements that injure reputation, credit, or earnings.(Note: insulting the King, Queen, heir, or Regent is a different and far more serious offence under Section 112, not ordinary defamation.)

Why don't you get on Thai social media and call Sondhi and his fellow protestors "antisemites" by name. A number of you have already done so on this forum, which by the way is counter to forum rules on "defamation." At worse you risk being tracked down and charged with criminal defamation for impinging on the reputations of the protestors with high-profile names, like Sondhi. Stand behind your principles, right?

I think it is unfortunate that pejorative term, "antisemite," rolls so easily off the tongue of a number of the farang on this forum.

My point being - if the protest was against Americans, Russians, or English? This would be a non-issue and no one on this forum would be using highly charge, pejorative terms to defame the protestors.

It would be interesting if this forum suddenly caught the interest of high-profile Thais who consider their personal reputations to be inviolate. Defamation is serious stuff here in Thailand.

It was at the Israeli embassy and some shockingly explicit anti Jewish signs were displayed.

Not to me it wasn't, but I never signed up for any Western political claptrap about Jewish feelings.

Personally I've always thought the Jews I've known through business and social contact have been lovely people, but then if the question of religion or the Holocaust came up I would state quite clearly I have no interest in religion and think that what happened nearly 100 years ago is ancient history, although very sad for those involved, now if that's antisemitic, I'm guilty as charged, but then again I don't give two hoots, life is the here and now, we'll all be brown bread soon enough.

Did you sign up for any "Asian political claptrap about Jewish feelings?"

"The Singaporean government maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward any form of antisemitism, considering the safety of its minority populations foundational to national security."

Strict Legal Protections

  • The Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act (MRHA): This unique law empowers the government to take pre-emptive action and issue immediate restraining orders against anyone—including religious leaders—who tries to cause ill-will, hatred, or hostility between different religious groups.

  • The Penal Code: Uttering racial or religious slurs, defacing religious property, or intentionally wounding the religious feelings of any person (online or offline) carries severe criminal penalties, including mandatory jail time.

  • Equal Enforcement: Singapore enforces its laws blindly across all communities. For instance, the state has prosecuted and removed religious leaders from other faiths for making derogatory remarks about Jews or Christians in their sermons.

2. Proactive National Security & Policing

  • The Internal Security Act (ISA): Singapore's domestic intelligence agency actively monitors extremist threats. The government has used the ISA to detain or issue restriction orders against self-radicalized individuals targeting the Jewish community long before they could act.

  • Physical Security: Prominent Jewish landmarks, such as the Maghain Aboth Synagogue and the Jacob Ballas Centre, receive close monitoring and protective oversight from local law enforcement, especially during high-tension geopolitical events.

3. Buffering Against Foreign Conflicts

  • Ban on Importing Tensions: The government strictly prohibits citizens from bringing foreign political conflicts (such as the Israel-Hamas war) into domestic life. Harassing local Jewish residents over the actions of the Israeli government is treated as criminal hostility rather than protected political speech.

  • Strict Control Over Public Events: Protests, rallies, or public fund-raising related to sensitive Middle Eastern politics are heavily restricted and monitored to prevent the incitement of local violence or harassment.
