Sondhi rallies at Israeli Embassy over property fears

Sondhi Limthongkul led supporters of the "Taking Back Our Thailand" movement to the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok on September 10, calling for action over alleged foreign domination of Thai real estate and concerns about some Israeli visitors.

The gathering began at 9am outside Ocean Tower 2 on Sukhumvit 21 in Asoke, where the embassy is based. Pantep Puapongphan, Nititorn Lamlua and Phichit Chaimongkol joined Sondhi, along with network leaders and a large number of members of the public, including Sirinat Samut, known as Sai Samut.

The group said it wanted to submit a letter demanding a crackdown on foreign capital acquiring property in Thailand, including through Thai nominees. It said the aim was to protect Thai sovereignty, the interests of Thai people and domestic businesses.

Embassy meeting offer declined

At about 10.15am, Sondhi told the crowd that the Israeli Embassy had said no staff were working that day, but that the ambassador was prepared to receive him privately at a later date.

Sondhi said he declined because the visit was being made on behalf of Thai people across the country and should not become a private discussion.

He then read an open letter to the embassy in English and Thai. It called on the Thai government and Israeli Embassy to address the issues in practical terms rather than merely acknowledge the complaint through diplomatic procedure.

The letter raised allegations involving the behaviour of some Israeli tourists and residents in Thailand, including alleged lawbreaking, disrespect for local customs, fraud and unpaid service bills. It said such cases had repeatedly affected local communities and prompted calls for more serious regulation.

Visa policy among protesters' concerns

Sai Samut said he had returned from the United States at 4am that morning before attending the rally. He argued that Thai people needed to work together to "take our country back from the government", claiming government administration had harmed Thai people's dignity.

He identified visa-free entry as the starting point of the problem, alleging that some visitors entered Thailand as tourists before operating businesses, settling in the country and mistreating Thai people without government protection.

Sai compared the current atmosphere to the period before the fall of Ayutthaya, while saying he had no political colour and would oppose anyone, of any nationality, who broke laws or failed to respect others.

Four demands

The group is making four demands to the Israeli embassy and government:

 1. Maintain strict control over citizens by enforcing training measures and emphasizing to Israeli tourists the importance of respecting Thai laws and culture.

2. Do not protect offenders; cooperate with the Thai police and authorities in prosecuting Israeli citizens who commit crimes, without using diplomatic intervention.

3. Disclose land ownership and cooperate transparently in the investigation of land ownership and operations of the Chabad Center, as well as related organizations in Thailand.

4. Send a message to the Israeli government urging them to end their atrocities against civilians in conflict zones and to abide by international humanitarian law.

Further rallies planned

Sondhi said the government should be concerned if it continued to favour capital interests rather than managing the situation. He said he would next submit a complaint concerning "Chinese grey capital" and planned speaking events in Chon Buri, Chanthaburi and Khon Kaen.

He also said the movement could gather again after the Election Commission's expected September 14 decision on whether the Senate election collusion case should be sent to the Supreme Court's Election Cases Division.

Separately, national artist Aed Carabao, real name Yuenyong Opakul, said he had recorded a song titled "Where Do Jewish People Come From?" in support of the movement. He cited previous warnings he had posted about alleged Israeli takeovers in Pai, Mae Hong Son, and Koh Phangan, Surat Thani.

I reckon a major factor in this rather bizarre flare up of Thais singling out Israelis when there ar misbehaving foreigners of all nationalities is coming from the Muslim part of the Thai population.

Guest/customer, same same.

There is no mention of Jews in my post or in the four demands that the protesters made, are you advocating antisemitic behavior or just trying to stir up trouble?

There have been good and bad foreigners visiting Thailand for decades, most visitors never have a problem, but lately it appears Israeli's have come to the Kingdom and upset the local population with their conduct, hardly a surprising when you see what's going on in their own State.

The list of demands you predictably enthusiastically endorsed is targeted only at Israel.

You have endorsed SCAPEGOATING only one country. Israel.

The only country in the world with a majority Jewish population.

We're not idiots dude. We see you.

Any decent person would voice dissent at such SCAPEGOATING.

The real question is, who's financing all that commotion? from docile people, Thais all of a sudden become very Anti-Semite, and vocal about some group of people? ''get out jews''? do they even know what their signs are saying? ask anyone of them who are the palestinian people or where Gaza is, and you'll get pair of lamb eyes looking back at you.

Yes that last protest was indeed a racist Jew hating protest.

It's pretty shocking actually.

I thought Thailand was better than that.

All the previous fancy dress Nazi parades and Hitler t shirts I took humorously as a gap in education.

But now this.

The international press should cover this.

The protest is a group of Thai's complaining about Israeli citizens conduct, land ownership/business dealings, and general disrespect of local customs and communities.

As I said in a previous post, all foreigners are guests in the Kingdom, the majority of foreigners have no problems, yet the Thai's feel that Israeli people are pushing their luck, and rightly or wrongly have picked out the Israel Embassy to stage a protest.

The fact that Israel is the only State in the world that has a majority Jewish population is irrelevant to the majority of Thai's, but then there are about 5% of the population of Thailand that are Muslim forming a diverse community with rich cultural roots spread all over the Kingdom.

The South: Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat have a large Muslim majority.

Bangkok: The capital city has a growing Muslim population with hundreds of mosques and many halal food choices.

Other Regions: Small communities live scattered across the central, northern, and northeastern parts of Thailand.

The fact you feel scapegoating Israel by anybody is laughable, the World and his wife has started to realise that there are two sides to every story and what has been happening in the Middle East since before Israel was recognized as a State is now being questioned by ordinary people around the globe, and it has come to Thailand.

When you single out Israelis for different treatment to everyone else, thats is regarded as being anti Semetic .

Will the protesting Thais be having demonstrations outside any other Countries Embassy ?

Protesting outside the French Embassy because the French guy owns a Zoo in Thailand ?

It is blatantly undeniably Anti Semetic to ask for all Jews to be removed from Thailand , which was requested in the signs at the protest .

It was indeed Anti semitic, no two ways about it .

Undeniable .

Jews OFTEN (usually?) claim antisemitism when their behaviour, or that of their fellow J's is challenged.

Happens on these threads all the time.

No other people have a special word to hide behind when challenged, but then again, maybe they don';t need one.

What's daft about claiming antisemitism, and then not doing anything about it?

Could it be there are no Thai laws covering antisemitism?

So, I asked Google: Is antisemitism illegal in Thailand, if it is done by Thai citizens

This was the reply:

No, general antisemitism is not explicitly illegal as a specific hate-speech crime under Thai law, even when expressed by Thai citizens.

Legal Framework

  • No Specific Hate Speech Laws: Thailand does not have dedicated legislation criminalizing hate speech, racism, or antisemitism directed at religious or ethnic groups.

  • General Criminal Laws May Apply: While expressing antisemitic views is not a crime by itself, related actions can cross into illegality under broader Thai statutes. If antisemitic rhetoric involves public insults, defamation, or incitement that disrupts public order or threatens violence, individuals can potentially face prosecution under the Thai Criminal Code or the Computer Crimes Act.

  • Constitutional Protections: Thailand's constitution generally protects freedom of expression, though it is subject to public order limitations. Extreme political speech or actions that threaten national security are tightly restricted, but abstract prejudice or bigotry does not carry a specific statutory ban.

Its quite certain that the Thai authorities already saw the Jews out sign.

If they were going to take action, then they would have done so already .

Reporting it wouldnt make any difference
