Swedish singer Zara Larsson has received a distinctly Thai-style tribute from the Koh Lanta language school where she says she attended third grade. Sanuk Language School, also known as Svenska Skolan Thailand, has put up congratulatory banners ahead of her sold-out Bangkok concert on November 1.
The banners appeared after Larsson told fans that Thailand was an important part of her childhood. Her comments surprised many Thai followers and the video spread widely on Thai social media.
Larsson announced the Bangkok date of her Midnight Sun Tour. The show is scheduled for UOB Live at Emsphere shopping mall, with Live Nation Tero as promoter.
School celebrates its former pupil
One banner outside Sanuk Language School reads: "Svenska Skolan Thailand would like to congratulate the world’s famous singer and our alumni, Zara Larsson. Her concert, Midnight Sun Tour, is coming to Thailand on November 1 at UOB Live, Emsphere."
Thai Ticketmajor shared images of the signs on its official Instagram account. Thai social media users noted their resemblance to the congratulatory banners commonly seen outside government offices around the country.
Larsson responded to the post with emojis, appearing to acknowledge and appreciate the gesture.
In a TikTok video, the singer explained why the Bangkok show felt personal to her, saying: "Honestly, this feels like semi-personal to me because I love Thailand I’ve been there so many times, I used to do third grade in Koh Lanta, fun fact, like Thailand raised me. It’s really no, honestly, it’s like it’s like a part of my childhood actually."
Ticket concerns followed by sell-out
Larsson has a substantial Thai fanbase, but some fans initially criticised ticket prices as expensive when compared with Thailand's minimum wage. Tickets were priced from 2,800 to 3,900 baht, while the Soundcheck VIP Package cost 9,000 baht.
The singer later said in a TikTok video that she agreed the tickets were not affordable for everyone, adding that she wanted fans to be able to attend and felt sorry for those unable to do so.
Tickets initially remained unsold, prompting Larsson to launch a campaign encouraging fans to post dancing videos on TikTok until the show sold out. The Bangkok leg sold out on August 27.
