Thai ‘Rental Wives’ Serve Older Western Men, Vietnam Media Says

Vietnamese media outlets have claimed Thai women are hired as "rental wives" by retired Western men, particularly in tourist centres including Pattaya. However, the reports provide no official figures, named providers or evidence that such arrangements are a recognised or widespread practice in Thailand.

The claims appeared in Vietnamese newspaper Tien Phong, which cited Chinese outlets Sina and Sohu. According to the reports, foreign visitors may pay Thai women to act as guides, partners and, in many cases, sexual companions.

The term could cover very different situations, ranging from paid companionship and informal relationships to commercial sex work, with differing legal and personal consequences.

Reports link claims to Vietnam War period

Tien Phong traced the alleged practice to the Vietnam War, when US military personnel were stationed at air bases in Thailand. It said local intermediaries introduced Thai women to American servicemen for fees, while entertainment venues near the bases developed from serving drinks into arranging female companionship.

The newspaper claimed comparable arrangements later became associated with Pattaya and other destinations as more Western men retired in Thailand. It portrayed the women involved as mainly coming from lower-income families seeking better earnings.

It said such arrangements could run from a few days to one or two years. Foreign partners were generally said to pay for accommodation, food, entertainment and other costs, while some couples were eventually reported to have married legally.

Prices and scale unverified

Tien Phong cited prices of around 13,000 baht a day for arrangements of fewer than seven days, falling to 9,000 baht a day for longer bookings. It put the cost of a month-long arrangement at roughly 50,000 baht.

But it did not identify the Thai media outlets said to have supplied those figures, name any service providers or produce official data. Nor did it cite a national survey or government statistics showing the scale of the alleged arrangements.

The reports warned that women could face unintended pregnancies, abandonment and financial insecurity. They also said foreign men could lose money or property through fraudulent relationships.

Thai abortion law misstated

Tien Phong also incorrectly said abortion is illegal in Thailand, claiming many women are left with unwanted children.

Termination is permitted without conditions during the first 12 weeks, and between 12 and 20 weeks after counselling with an authorised medical professional.

Other grounds include health risks, severe foetal abnormalities and sexual assault.

We have also heard about the bargirl who has a bunch of farang on her phone who come here at different times of the year,

Girlfriends son works in popular Pattaya Bar Restaurant that has music. His girlfriend has a German Boyfriend who sends her money. Same deal. He comes to town and her son lays low. Couple weeks a month and he's gone they get back together.

German Boyfriend calls and they are in bed next to one another. Her son appreciates the benefit of the German guys money allowing her to buy him clothes, eat at nice restaurants and stay in a nice condo.

These arrangements probably started before the Vietnam War, but they grew big time as servicemen came here, picked up a bargirl of such, and set up relationships that were financially profitable to the girl as well as beneficial to the man.

Had a friend in the 90s who used to come to Thailand on his holidays for 2 weeks. He would call his friend and she would be waiting for him at the airport. She stayed with him the whole trip, and all her expenses were paid, along with a few thousand baht to help her sick relative.

We have also heard about the bargirl who has a bunch of farang on her phone who come here at different times of the year,

Girls do it all the time. It makes sense that you invite a girl to be with you; she simply takes time off from the bar. You don't have to worry about anything, and you have a companion.

Now consider if you have a wife or girlfriend, and you go on a holiday, you probably will spend more and get less sex and enjoyment.

You still have to pay for everything and give her some money to spend. What is the difference

I was not debating your statement.

My point was that there were probably a lot of Thais in the film dressed as Viets.

Same thing happens in the tourist areas of Vietnam. Most the girls wearing an Ao Dai and straw hat are Thai or Chinese tourists,, including my Missus in the photo.

And in general I think the Thai tourists were better looking than the local girls, which may help to explain the observations in the original article.

OK but I just glommed onto the girl as a Vietnamese traditionally-dressed heartthrob and only realized later she was Thai.

13,000 baht per night. Sure. Maybe 'long time' and including the price of a 5 star horel with breakfast for two and lounge access.

They're just talking about escorts. Certainly there are some escorts who get that much. They're just not using the word "escorts."

Some get more.

In Indonesia it is or was possible to get a "wife" for , say, 1 year as a foreign worker if she and her parents agreed. All signed at the local "ampur"

I didn't, and neither did any of my contemporaries, as a quick trip to a larger town "to play golf" yielded short term companions.

Hell, a woman working at 7-11 Full time earns about 13,000 a month...

At these prices, it would be cheaper to hire a top GoGo girl from Walking Street full-time....

No girls get this kind of allowance in Thailand...ZERO....

And to top it off all Vietnamese girls are as pure as the driven snow...Right?

That's what the advert says...

You mean cadies, or just golf as an excuse? The Thai Cadies thing has always been intriguing though I never tried it. Years ago in Cambodia near the lake with all the restaurants apparently, after the meal, you could go to a shack with the waitress. Pretty sad. Never did that either. That was years ago.

I think its a very clever marketing ploy by Vietnam to make people think that it would be cheaper to have those sorts of relationships in Vietnam by quoting nonsense prices.

I always pay for an hour and then wonder what I'm going to do for the other 57 minutes.

An article like that will drive the prices up in Thailand.. Back in 2001 paid 10K Bt for a whole month.

In about 2011, I paid 7000 for "come over any time I call" for a month.
