Thailand Launches Digital Immigration App to Speed Up Border Processing

Thailand’s Immigration Bureau has introduced a new mobile application aimed at reducing arrival processing times for international visitors while maintaining security checks at the country’s borders.

Digital arrival cards replace paperwork

The new system, known as the Thailand Immigration Management System (THIM), allows foreign travellers to complete arrival card information digitally before reaching Thailand.

Available on both Apple and Android devices, the application uses AI-powered passport scanning to complete a one-time registration process. Future visits will require only limited updates, reducing the amount of information travellers need to submit each time they enter the country.

Immigration officials say the system is designed to cut processing times at border checkpoints to less than three minutes.

Focus on security and efficiency

The platform was developed by Digital Identity Co., Ltd in partnership with Thailand’s Immigration Bureau and operates on cloud infrastructure hosted within Thailand through Amazon Web Services' Bangkok region.

Officials said the project was designed to improve efficiency without compromising border security. Traveller data will remain within Thailand in accordance with national legal requirements, while the digital platform is intended to strengthen identity verification and screening procedures.

The bureau has stressed that faster processing will not come at the expense of security measures, which remain a central part of the immigration process.

Expansion planned

Immigration authorities plan to expand the capabilities of the THIM platform beyond arrival registration.

Future updates are expected to include online visa extension services and digital 90-day reporting for foreign residents. Officials also aim to introduce automated border clearance for a wider range of nationalities.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort to modernise immigration services as Thailand continues to handle large numbers of international arrivals each year.

Unveiled at technology summit

The new system was presented during the AWS Summit 2026 in Bangkok, where officials outlined the role of cloud technology in supporting the country's immigration operations.

Thailand receives around 30 million international visitors annually, and authorities believe digital processing will help reduce congestion at border checkpoints while improving the overall travel experience.

Pol Maj Gen Pratya Prasarnsuk, deputy commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, said the bureau remains focused on balancing traveller convenience with the security responsibilities required at the country's borders.

Online reporting doesn't work for everyone. I don't know why not. I can attest to the fact that I am the poster boy for TM-47 online not working. I keep hoping that one day soon the IT professionals at Immigration will be able to sort out things like this. Meanwhile there are indeed exceptions to the rule. Double meanwhile, I'm happy that online works for so many people. Just wish I was one of them. LOL.

I used it when I flew out a couple of weeks ago and it was very smooth and there were no lines.

Good on Thailand for this, if only backwards nations like America would start using advanced systems, that would be amazing.

So now in addition to immigration, 5G networks and fiber optic are three times faster in Thailand than they are in America at a third the price, that's what I call progress.

Automated pre clearance systems are available in the USA. Global Entry, Nexus etc. I have the Global Entry app. Millions of people use the apps.

Completely false information. Unless you have Global Entry, or a similar paid system, you are forced to wait on significantly long lines coming into the US, and the security set up going out in certain airports is absolutely horrendous. If I'm flying alone I can use the Customs and Border Protection app which speeds things up but if I'm traveling with my Thai wife that system is not available to tie nationals.

I do it all the time so the idea of scanning your passport is beyond what we would refer to as bad information.

Global entry is available to nationals of countries that have agreements with the USA. This includes

  • Australia

No its not. If 2 (or 1000s) uses the same equipment without issues and 1 with identical gear cant make it work problem is likely a operator error and that is [normally] a quick fix.

(1) What browser do you use? (2) How many days before the due date are you sending your report (15 to 7 days before due date is best) (3) Have you tried clearing your cache before submitting your report? (4) Has your address actually been confirmed at immigration? (5) And there are other "tips / tricks" but th efew I mentioned generally clear up most issues.

Yes, it is true that the first 90-Day must be in person, then after that ... online works perfectly. But, the reality is ... the decision to bitch and moan about the "difficulty" of 90-Day reporting by people who refuse to use the online system, (which I have been doing for YEARS without a hitch) ... is a CHOICE the person complaining makes. It is like a person deciding to walk when free transit is available, then complaining that the choice they made (!) resulted in their feet hurting. Up to you han-sum man! Up to you! 555

So we can agree that the online 90-day reporting is totally useless for people like myself who leave Thailand multiple times per year, but it is perfect for people like you who presumably never leave the country. Or do you think I should not complain because it's convenient for you since you don't leave the country?

The other issue for me, aside from needing to go all the way across Bangkok and spend a whole day doing this 90-day report because I am not eligible to do it online is the fact that the entire exercise is pointless. Why should it be necessary for me to tell the Thai authorities every 90 days that I still live in the same condo (that I own) that I have been living in for the past four years? Why can't the law be: We will assume that you are living at your last reported address - unless you tell us otherwise. And if you move, you must inform us within, say, 14 days.

I would actually be willing to go through this pointless exercise of reporting my address every single day - if I could do it online every time without having to report in person on my first report after returning to Thailand from abroad.

Yes, for people like you crossing in and out of Thailand several times a year, online reporting is not an option. If you expect me to rationalize or defend the whole 90 Day process, wow, you have no idea how much "I am not that guy" As for your bitching and moaning about it online ... it makes you look like a child. By the way, it is possible to hire agents in Bangkok who can easily get your paperwork done, since clearly, your time is so, so valuable.

I am confident your IO probably does not have "clue one" about the technology and rules that dictate 90 day online reporting, but since you have not answered any questions from someone trying to help you and who has successfully used online reporting since it became available ... signing off and wishing you luck.

Better, but for whom?

What permissions does this app require? What does it do, lurking in the background on your phone? Does it log keystrokes and spy on you for the state?

No thanks, but we don't have a choice. Take the digital suppository or stay home. I never found it a burden to go to the consulate for a visa, nor to fill out a simple form whilst sitting on the plane or standing in line at immigration. A friend of mine made a mistake on his online application for a rich guy visa and lost £300. It pissed him off and Thailand missed an opportunity to sell an extended stay visa to an affluent man.

Where the USA really fails is at TSA security screening

I saw an interview with an Israeli security expert back in 2001 who said that they offered to train American customs agents in the techniques Israel uses so successfully (they've got their chit dialed) but the Americans declined the offer and went with what they've got now. Sometimes the process is the punishment. Going through an American airport is a humiliation ritual for a reason. It sure increased the power of the state and has enriched companies who make the devices used in the process.

The equivalent to the Thai general entry app in the USA is the Mobile Passport Control (MPC): A free app available to U.S. citizens, Green Card holders, Canadian B1/B2 visitors, and eligible Visa Waiver travelers. This allows visitors to input there date by mobile phone. They still have the option of the work stations on arrival. The Thailand TDAC and the app discussed in this topic is not the equivalent of the Global Entry or other Trusted Traveler cards.

US Global Entry is a pre screening service where the biometrics of the traveler are taken and stored. The information can be shared with other law enforcement agencies and the card can serve as valid identity for multiple states regulatory licenses.

The US Global entry cost is $25 per annum, payable as $120 for a 5 year period. An equivalent to the US Global Entry is the UK Registered Traveller Service for non UK/EU nationals. It costs £70 GBP for the first year, and £50 GBP for renewals. It allows card holders to use the UK/EU ePassport gates and avoid filling in a landing card.

Re THIM, the current services provides and conditions of use below.

The upside down the road with THIM (being very optimistic) is hopefully they can load all of these various pieces of information under a common THIM storage repository with live and historical user and immigration data to solve a lot of the issues of information indifference between the various immigration applications and software services issues mentioned and experiences on this forum.

got it but don't see the good about it, have the DAC app and that has my personal account to log int, the new THIM has no personal account settings or I didn't find them, as soon as open the app I am in and didn't ask me to login, am I missing something

Your question is totally irrelevant.

No its not. The software doent recognize or connect to older versions of phone OS so if your os on the phone you have is not supported then it wont work. Same with banking apps.

The 3 minute processing time is not the problem. The small arrival area and the volume of people trying to access the poorly manned booths is.

I have said that for some years they are 25+ booths, most times less than half are manned, that is the bottle neck.

As for the ''New system' 'will it be assessable from my local immigration office, when I renew my extension?

Anything that is to do with a joined-up government is still not here; they will still love all they paperwork

Not compatible on my device. How can I change that to download the app on my phone?

Get an up to date phone ? The THIM app only requires Android 8, which is ancient. Don't know about apple OS, but the app store should tell you the version required.

The naysayers will have a field day with this for sure, especially the ones who NEVER leave Thailand and despise change. You know who you are.

What's wrong with never leaving Thailand. I like it, here. I am comfortable. I haven't been out of Thailand since I went to Singapore back in 2016. I can't count all the new gizmos, forms, apps, websites, and codes that have come and gone since then. I've avoided all of them.
