Travelers Embrace Bangkok's "Saddest Escalator" Farewell

Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport escalator has gained viral fame as the "world's saddest escalator," capturing the sentiment of tourists reluctant to leave Thailand. Frequent visitors and social media users have tagged emotional videos with phrases like "Thailand blues" to express their fondness for the country's culture, landscapes, and hospitality. The trend highlights Thailand's enduring appeal, drawing visitors who often extend their stays or plan future visits.

The "Thailand effect" is a shared experience among many travelers, including German tourist Brajan Bolewski, who felt three weeks in the kingdom was too short. He praised the friendly culture and environment, contemplating a potential future in Thailand. Thailand has become a preferred destination for digital nomads and remote workers due to its affordable living costs and vibrant infrastructure.

Visitors like Mills McManus and Megan Blunt exemplify how short trips often turn into prolonged stays. They found themselves captivated by Thailand's appealing lifestyle, prompting a reassessment of priorities. Similarly, British national Mark Haldor's brief visits have led to a permanent relocation to Bangkok, fueled by the region's quality of life and welcoming atmosphere.

Looking forward, Thailand continues to benefit from a strong post-pandemic tourism recovery, attracting millions with its diverse landscapes and cultural allure. As travelers leave Suvarnabhumi's escalator, they carry memories and an eagerness to return, marking a testament to Thailand's lasting impact.

OK, but you made an assumption. Patong, Pattaya, Krabi, Chiang Mai et al would not be over flowing with sex workers if there wasn't a consumer demand. And there are just as many male and transgender hookers giving a send off to their loser customers.

I doubt that very much... you just made it up.

You don't believe that the rentboys and ladyboys are just as likely to accompany their customers to the Bangkok airport. Ok.

You can can live in denial. I won't lose sleep over it.

Or an old fart like me, who walks past it to the Priority gate. Oh, and takes my 33 yr younger partner with me!

You really must have low self-esteem if you need to post comments like this in response to an article about Thailand. This is NOT about you. Only someone who feels inferior would use this as an opportunity to brag about themselves and put others down in the same breath.

Simpler than that.... there are fewer of them so it is less likely!

They can also kiss goodbye in the gents toilet!

He did not put anyone down. He said he used priority and had a younger partner. You then attacked him for it. You're the one with low self esteem not him.

Loser comment still makes you a loser

Indeed. Usual clickbait <deleted> from manfromanotherforum as was.

The plonker even posted up some photos of his (mediocre) business class flight offering on one occasion here iirc

Btw, l went through Suvarnbhumi last week, fast track immigration is still downstairs but had moved from previous location I used in March. Horrid queues observed previously for that escalator stretching way into the check-in area....the passengers as much p!ssed off as sad!

Check me if I’m wrong. Yesterday I took the same escalator to security then to immigration. Then to the gate, then to a business class seat.

The fast-track entrance is located at ground level, right at the far end of each side of the airport.

So if you, TedG, took the escalator up, you would have gone straight through the immigration lanes designed for the rest of us mere mortals.

My wife travelled last month and faced a 20-minute wait just to reach the escalator - it’s a serious bottleneck.

I’ve seen queues snake back from it, although I’m usually spared thanks to the Thai Elite fast-track.

A mixed blessing, really - it means I miss the full on theatre of the brass performing their grand, tearful farewells, only for the performance to end the moment their boomer benefactor disappears from view, followed by a flurry of messages to other “sponsors” after a conveniently silent spell - “solly-na, phone-batallee have plompem”…

Maybe TAT could do a monthly 1 Millionth Tourist to cry up on leaving article.

With a photo of Dave's girlfriend simultaneously waving goodbye to him and hello to Franz just arriving off Lufthansa Bk362.

That's simply because those people do not know Bangkok... Take the train in Phaya Thai for instance... Oops, I thought it was Asok BTS...

Know that feeling from years ago, before I moved here permanently; never associated it with a particular escalator though.
