CMU Freshies to Walk up Doi Suthep Saturday 9th September

CityNews – The tradition where the freshman year of Chiang Mai University walks up Doi Suthep mountain to kickstart their first year will be held this Saturday 9th from around 5pm to 3pm.

 

The tradition began in 1964 when Chiang Mai University was first established. This year will be the 53rd ceremony, which also includes a visit to the Kruba Srivichai monument, a sacred saint of Chiang Mai, followed with a 12km walk up the mountain along the trail that Kruba Srivichai took when he began the construction of Wat Doi Suthep.

 

The annual ceremony is also attended by seniors who give moral support and encouragement to the freshmen, and is aimed at forming a strong bond between the students.

The beginning of the next 4-5 years of brainwashing to conform!

 

Those don't look like the optimal hiking outfits! All that holding of hands reminds me of kindergarten days, I can hear my teacher now "single file !" "hold hands" "look left"!!!...

Is this hazing?  IF you want to opt out are you ostracized?  Are you called the kid that wimped out?

How many physically and emotional scared kids does this create?  

 

On the other hand, is this THE big event that "freshies" look forward to?  Is this the right of passage? Does this bond kids and friendships for life?   Is it cool to say, "I went to CMU and did The Walk"  

 

 

 

If that is an actual picture of the scenario, it would be the ultimate extreme of uncool !

Boo-hoo, let's get some guts banged into them with an old-fashioned ordeal. This is wimpy compared to the lovely tortures they undoubtedly endured in the good old days.

" The Public Relations Office announced that it is estimated 30,000 people will be participating in the event of which 8,000 are freshman students and the rest are senior students (including those with disabilities), alumni, lecturers and staff. "

 

It's a very popular event, almost three quarters of those attending will not be freshmen but voluntary participants.  A friend of mine who graduated from CMU several years ago is taking time off from her job in Bangkok to participate.  Another friend, also a CMU grad, has complained that she can't get time off from her work to join the walk.

Is this the same event?
