Land Transport Dept begins issuing smart driving licenses

BANGKOK: -- Starting yesterday (Sept 4), the Land Transport Department will issue new driving licenses which are smart cards encoded with QR code and safe against counterfeiting, said Sanit Promwong, the department chief.

 

But he said however that existing driving licenses are legally valid and need not have to be changed to the new smart driving licenses unless the licenses have expired.

 

Life-long driving licenses can still be used and they need not have to be replaced unless the holders of the driving licenses want them to be upgraded, said Mr Sanit.

My DL picture is shocking so this is a good opportunity to get a new one with a better picture along with whatever bells and whistles this QR code thingamabob affords.

 

Smart eh?

It's safe against counterfeiting, but it's no guarantee the licensee can drive.

When will they start issuing smart drivers?

and i am sure every checkpoint/collection stop will carry smart D/L machines to verify the authenticity of peoples licenses

But if your license gets revoked, then you can use the other one to drive car/bike.

What is so smart about a QR code? It is nothing but text in a non-alphabetic format. Anybody with a QR reader app on the smartphone can read it
