Hi,

My fiance and I used to live in Thailand. I had a work permit, working as a teacher, and she was on a student visa, studying Thai.

We are currently back in South Africa. She is an artist and is self employed. We would like to come back to Thailand on a more permanent basis. I would easily get another work permit as I have all the required qualifications to get one from the school, but she would also like to continue working legally as an artist. Is there a way of getting a work permit for someone that is not employed by a company in Thailand, but rather works independently?

I'll appreciate your advice.

if you get your WP and extension of stay then she should be able to get her visa on the back of that. if she is an 'artist' surely she could just say it's a hobby? If she is looking to sell her art then she might want to speak to a gallery owner of which their are many. if you PM me i have a friend that owns a couple of galleries who might be able to at least give her some advice and/or contacts.

They would have to married for her to apply for an extension as his dependent.

No mention here of them getting married yet.

fair enough, my mistake. didn't know you had to be married. More thai language lessons it is then!

OP as your GF won't be able to get a WP and as UJ says can't get a visa based on your extension as you are not married? you might want to double check current rules for Ed visas. I am not sure of the rules but I have a friend who has been using them (despite speaking fluent thai!) and he reckons they are giving less time and number of courses you can do to people from english speaking countries apparently in an attempt to stop the number of illegal language teachers using them. he could be wrong but worth looking into and probably worth coming back with fresh passports
