New police checkpoints set up in Bangkok

BANGKOK: -- More police checkpoints will be set up in the Thai capital and maximum security at embassies will be imposed following a warning by Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont that more explosives could be set off in the coming months, a senior police officer said on Saturday.

Senior Bangkok police officers were ordered by Pol. Maj. Gen. Kamol Kaewsuwan, Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner, to double the number of security checkpoints from the 42 presently operated to 84, to be manned by police, military personnel and volunteers round-the-clock.

Maximum security will be in force at embassies, together with as many as 300 shopping malls, entertainment venues and ports.

Bangkok police will also ask for help from the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology for more efficient monitoring and tracing of telephone calls relating to bomb threats and other security incidents which have been creating confusion since last Sundays bombings, which left three persons killed and 42 others wounded, including nine foreigners.
