I really don't understand why the fact he's gay & has a husband, has to be made so prominent. Will his sexual identity enable him to do his job better?

If someone is gay, so what?

What if he is gay !1 so what.

He will probably be as useless as those that he be in the job before.

British embassy is only interested in screwing ex-pats out of money, nothing else.

Look at my case, i am in hospital in a coma, wife is unaware of what to do because i am British.

So she calls the British embassy for help/advice, as was promptly told !! not our problem goodbye !!

I believe that's a tradition in the Foreign Office, or any government-department anywhere, actually ? :whistling:

Up-to-him/them, I just wish he'd spare a little time from normal country-representing flag-waving business, to send some helpful feedback back-to-base, and help improve service for Brits living here, too.  "I have a Dream !"  :coffee1:

I am interested to hear why it is their problem.

After a year he still appears pretty remote from the UK expat community in Thailand especially when it comes to social media whereas the previous encumbents of the position were far more visible - i saw Kent was tweeting his support for Jonathon Head during his recent trial despite having left the post some time back and now being Ambassador to Argentina.

Read my post, properly before you make smart comments.

As i clearly stated, my wife was in a turmoil, not knowing what she should do, a member of this forum gave her the number of the British embassy and suggested she asked them for advice.

I hope for your sake you never are unfortunate to be in a coma, because your wife would then be in the same situation.

Because he, and his wife, (like many others)  believed that the British Embassy was there to assist British nationals in times of crisis.

If you ever find yourself in a similar situation you will quickly learn that they are as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike.

I am interested to hear why you feel it necessary to make a smart comment such as this?

All of these Amassador chappies/chappiesses are probably failed UK civil servants who had to be promoted out of one job before they created too much damage and this where they end up, a 2 year stint at different private hotels belonging to the UK government, move before they create to much damage and upset someone.

They probably start life at some obscure HMG University for people who fail in the real world must be found a job  or something to pass the time by a "friend of the family", keep it in the family, the family of polictics. If you get a lot of brownire points on your travels you might end up at the EU trough which will secure your pleasures for the rest of your life, just talk with an Irish accent after 2019.

""Hello I am from the Embassy of the UK and I am here to help you! Could you come back next week?""

Because many of us, although now residing in (or just passing-through) Thailand, still pay some tax back in the UK too, I certainly do, and thus contribute towards his wages & emoluments ?

I believe Americans also once had a bit of a problem, with their being expected to pay UK-taxes, without getting any representation or services back in-return ? :whistling:

I think there is a serious issue between expectation/perception and reality.

his Chinese-American husband

So, then, that makes him the wife....?  So difficult to sort all this out when they're both standing.

It may not be " their problem" but at the very least I would suggest that it is hardly unreasonable to turn to them for advice and indeed assistance, in such circumstances. To refuse it is frankly pathetic and disgraceful. Especially as most of us would at least attempt to help someone in that position, "crisply ironed slacks" and "walking the walk" on diversity notwithstanding.

Instead of making bland statements how about addressing frozen pensions and getting your staff of their <deleted> once in a while to do outreach programs like other embassies do?

Two trips to an outsourced office in Bkk to renew a passport that then has to go back to the UK is ridiculous.

Send an openly gay ambassador with his head in the clouds to a country under a military ************.

No wonder they think Britain is a joke these days.

Being openly gay is a handicap is it? Being gay affects the way you do your job? Was it not Hitler who denounced homosexuality and murder thousands in WW2. And when has the current government said that the U.K is a joke?

Your opinions are bigoted nonsense.

Why do we even bother to have an embassy here anymore?? They do F&*k all and charge way over the top for something that should be free. We can not even get passports processed here anymore and have to pay through the nose to and use an agency to perform the task of sending it back home. Sell up the embassy estate and kick them out. No use to anyone and just wasting tax payers money.

It is not beneficial to be openly gay when dealing with the Thai males in the currently military junta, no.

Nice Godwinning though, I'll give you that.

Not sure Prem would agree with you there.

I expect he wants to show off his partner and be instrumental in declaring his equal right i.e. equal to a heterosexual, as a homosexual, to be married and have the custody of a child; in the future he'll probably get over it but now I expect he's highly excited and in celebratory mood because of the fact that he is able to openly broadcast his marital status in the same way as a heterosexual might.

Like you, I see no relevance in the fact that he's homosexual except that it might be relevant to another homosexual.

I was not trying to make smart comments. It is not the mandate of the diplomatic service to act as policemen, ombudsmen or social services. There maybe circumstances where they will assist with repatriation, but that would be on a case by case basis.

I've done my share in ICU thank you.

This is the same example of a false notion, hard and unpleasant as it maybe.

So now you know: There is no tooth fairy and our country does not care about us one little bit. Nor has it for years. The taxes you pay mean nothing. You mean nothing.

I do not mean any of this as a personal slight to yourself, but I think it is high time that the misplaced patriotism so many feel ought to be brought to an end.
