HAT YAI: -- POLICE on Thursday released a sketch of the suspect who fatally shot police volunteer Chokdee Suntharakorn near the Kuan Lang Intersection in Songkhla’s Hat Yai district early on Tuesday morning.

The sketch, based on eyewitness testimony, shows a dark-skinned man aged between 30-35 with curly, neck-length hair.

The suspect escaped on a blue Honda Wave 100 motorcycle with an unknown licence plate number.

Authorities in Hat Yai and Bang Klam districts were told the suspect is believed to be a local man who is still in the area.

Chokdee, 37, was patrolling the area on a motorcycle with a police sergeant who rode a separate motorcycle. They chased the motorcyclist, who reportedly looked suspicious and was travelling against the traffic.

When Chokdee caught up with the suspect, the man fired one shot at him and sped off. Chokdee died later in hospital.

Provincial Police Region 9 chief Pol Lt-General Sakhon Thongmunee has raised Bt347,800 in donations from police, state offices and the private sector to help Chokdee’s 70-year-old mother and his unemployed wife.

Chokdee’s cremation will be held on Monday at Wat Khlong Play in Tambon Kho Hong of Hat Yai.
