All 10 Narathiwat residents suspected of contracting Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) while making the pilgrimage to the hajj in Saudi Arabia have tested negative.

Dr Sommai Boonkliang, the province’s chief public-health officer, said the 10 had been among the 1,152 Thai Muslims who returned home from Mecca Thursday through Sunday.

They had been quarantined on admission to provincial hospitals after indicating high fever.

Sommai dismissed a rumour circulating on social media that several Narathiwat pilgrims had MERS.

Seven of the 10 suspected cases had been quarantined at a hospital in Mueang Narathiwat, one in Rusoh, one in Yingor hospital and the last in Rangae.

Some have already been discharged, Sommai added.
