Security tightened in Narathiwat after Yala blasts

By The Nation

NARATHIWAT: -- Troops, police and civilian volunteers tightened inspections at road checkpoints around Narathiwat downtown on Friday morning following fatal bomb attacks in neighbouring Yala province on Thursday.

Vehicles on four main roads leading to Narathiwat’s Muang district had to pass through security checkpoints and were screened closely. The four checkpoints are the Yakang checkpoint on Rangae-Mueang Road, Plukpla checkpoint on Pattani-Mueang Road, Rimnam checkpoint on Tak Bai-Mueang Road and the checkpoint in front of the old electricity generating plant on Muang-Narathat Beach Road.

The officials manning the checkpoints thoroughly checked persons in vehicles and inspected the vehicles and motorcycles for hidden bombs. Motorcyclists were asked to show the compartment under the pillion and even open the fuel tank.

The officials also checked identification cards of all inside vehicles and compared them to facial photos of suspects on arrest warrants.

Several security units were also deployed to patrol along safety zones around roads in the inner part of Narathiwat downtown, including communities, major shopping areas and hotels.

Police and troops dispatched patrol units to secure main and secondary roads linking Muang district to outer districts.
